Cross Save do you need to link up your Battle.net account?

So I just learned yesterday from some friends of mine that you can set up cross saves to prepared for D2 moving to Steam. I only played on Xbox One and dropped out shortly after the first raid dropped. I got the game for free on Battle.net from a special promotion and only finished the first mission never touched it since. Do you absolutely need to link your Battle.net account in order to get D2 on Steam? I know it's moving no matter what, but in order to have the game in my Steam library do you need to link it up first? Then my next question is if I'm wanting to just play with my character(s) from Xbox One do I just need to link up Xbox to Steam? Cause my one character on Battle.net has nothing but I at least have three characters on Xbox that are 325 Light with gear. I know it's telling me that linking from console to Steam will not be fully implemented until Oct 1. So I have Xbox linked up but I haven't linked up my Battle.net account yet. Cause I don't want to transfer the one character and not be capable of playing with my characters from Xbox. Or does the Cross Save simply let me choose at any moment which platform I want to use regardless if I have both Xbox and Battle.net linked up?

  • On October 1st when Shadowkeep drops we will also be getting New Light which is all the year 1 content, base D2, Curse of Osiris and Warmind. New Light is a free download for all players. So if all you ever owned on Battle.net was the base game then no, you don't need to link a Battle.net account to your profile. The only reason to link Battle.net and Steam is to transfer your D2 licenses. However, since you can get the same license for free under New Light on Oct 1 and you don't care about your one existing PC character then you don't need to worry about linking a Battle.net account.
