Gambit Prime: "What's my Role?"

Now, I'm making this thread because TOO many people play Gambit Prime like regular Gambit. If you play it this way, you're going to struggle and you're going to really affect your team by not performing your role correctly or adequately. The VERY first thing you should do is look at your team while you're waiting to be deployed, what does your team consist of? If you have an entire team of a singular role, you're at a big disadvantage. Luckily, that happens rarely, and even if you have overlapping roles, the nice thing about them is they sort of bleed into other roles just a bit, so they can fill in for them when needed. Not only this but you should generally have two teams of two. Reapers and Collectors are team one, Sentries and Invaders are team two. Both roles should be working together. Now, to get onto what your role is and what you need to do and what you should be prioritizing. I'll be including good loadouts that make your job easier for your class/role as well. Every class will have the same recommended weapon loadout as well. Collectors As a Collector the entire Mote phase revolves around you. You should be the one gathering the most motes. Notes to other players, specifically Sentries and Invaders, do not prioritize this, even at the beginning of a round. You should be allowing your Collector(s) to be gathering the most motes as fast as possible. The faster they can summon Large/Giant blockers, the more ammo and resources your enemy needs to put out on their side to be able to bank/protect their motes. You should be with a Reaper at generally all times, they will focus on taking out most of the mobs while you collect the motes(you will be helping them take out enemy AIs as well), and when you're filled up on motes, they can then pick up any you've left behind. Generally, your loadouts and a Reaper's loadouts are going to be very similar in terms of what they're there for. This is why these two pair together very well and can fill for each other's roles when needed. When it comes to the Primeval fight, your primary job is done. You basically lose any value from your gear set, but that's perfectly fine. Just pump damage into the Primeval, and whenever an Invader comes in, help your fellow Invader take them down, as you provide no real bonus to your allies whereas Sentries and Reapers still do. Reapers Reapers are here for defeating enemies as fast as possible and generating Motes for their Collectors. You generally have the most to do and worry about in a match. You help make the Collector's job much easier and safer. Your primary goal of course is generating motes, taking out high value targets and powerful enemies, but your secondary goal is also ensuring that motes make it to the bank. This means aiding in collecting motes or even helping take out Blockers. You'll be with a Collector as much as possible making sure they get as many motes as possible in a short period of time. If they hit their maximum of 15/20 while there are still some motes, you can go ahead and pick them up and travel with the Collector to the bank to pop them in there and then head back to the next area you need to be at. You can flex into the role of a Sentry and Collector when needed, making you the most flexible teammate in a match. When it comes to the Primeval fight, you're there to make quick work of Envoys and trash mobs to get to damage phases as fast as possible. You still keep most of your value during this phase unlike a Collector, you can keep generating special ammo for your team, weaken Envoys, and throw grenades like crazy. Weapons Primary: Auto Rifles, SMGs, or Hand Cannons. Notable choices: Breakneck, Gnawing Hunger(curated role), Recluse, Hand Cannons with Outlaw/Rampage Special: Shotguns or Fusions. Notable choices: Loaded Question, Shotguns with Trench Barrel/Full Auto Heavy: Machine Guns. Notable choices: 21% Delirium Exotic Weapon: Sunshot, Crimson, Graviton Lance, Sweet Business, Telesto, Jotunn, Ace of Spades, Huckleberry, Le Monarque, Lord of Wolves, Trinity Ghoul, Riskrunner, Thunderlord, One Thousand Voices, Anarchy, Wardcliff Coil Hunters: Subclass: Way of the Trapper, Way of the Wraith, Way of the Outlaw, Way of a Thousand Cuts, or any Arcstrider variant Exotic Armor: Wormhusk Crown, Foetracer, Graviton Forfeit, Shards of Galanor, Shinobu's Vow, Sealed Ahamkara Grasps, Gwisin Vest, Raiden Flux, Lucky Raspberry, Ophidia Spathe, Orpheus Rig Titans: Subclass: Code of the Commander, Code of the Aggressor, any Sunbreaker variant, any Striker variant. Exotic Armor: Insurmountable Skullfort, One-Eyed Mask, Synthoceps, Doomfang Pauldrons, Armamentarium, Hallowfire Heart, Actium War Rig Warlocks: Subclass: Attunement of Flame, Attunement of Grace, any Voidwalker variant, Attunement of the Elements, Attunement of Control Exotics: Crown of Tempests, Nezarec's Sin, Skull of Dire Ahamkara, Apotheosis Veil, Contraverse Hold, Sunbracers, Getaway Artist, Chromatic Fire, Phoenix Protocol, Geomag Stabilizers, Lunafaction Boots Sentries Your primary goals are very defense oriented. You essentially are warding off the enemy's attempts at harassing and interrupting your team. You should be taking out Blockers as fast as possible and searching and dealing with Invaders alongside your fellow Invader. When there are no blockers or invaders up, you should be assisting Reapers by taking out enemy combatants. Don't stray too far from your bank during the Mote collection phase though. That's where you're most potent. When an Invader comes in, you should be looking for where they spawn so you can mark them, alerting your team where they are so the Reaper and Collector can keep away from them and your Invader can help you take them out. When it comes to Primeval phase, you're there to take out the Envoys similarly to the Reaper. You will still be keeping a lookout for the Invaders as they will come frequently during this phase. However, you shouldn't engage them at this point. You're more useful in the Well of Light. Make sure your Collector can aid the Invader whenever necessary. Your loadouts should consist of a mix of the Invader and Collector/Reaper loadouts enough so that you can take out Blockers consistently and keep track of invaders. This means you'll generally be wanting a mix of close/long range weapons, try to get some stuff in there that specializes in dealing with Taken! As for your subclass, you can essentially use whatever you are comfortable with. Invaders Your main goal is to disrupt the enemy team as much as possible. You should be the only one using the invasion portal, and when you're not invading, you should be assisting your Sentry or putting damage into the Primeval with your damage buff from successful invasions. Just because your role appears to suggest mostly PvP engagements, you should NOT just be sitting by the portal at all times doing nothing until the portal opens. Assist your allies when you can't invade. During Mote phase, focus on hunting down Reapers and Collectors, or in other words, the players with the most motes. During Primeval phase, you should predict when the enemy has defeated Envoys to damage their Primeval. This is when you want to invade. Deny them damage and heal the primeval. This is when they'll be easier to take out as they'll be grouping up at the Well of Light. When you're not invading, help your Sentry take out blockers, and you should chase down Invaders when they come in. Loadouts you can make should look something like... Weapons Primary: Scout Rifles, Pulse Rifles, Hand Cannons. Notable choices: Go Figure, Blast Furnace, Redrix's Broadsword, Luna's Howl/Not Forgotten, Bygones Special: Sniper Rifles, Shotguns, Fusion Rifles. Notable choices: The Supremacy, Bite of the Fox, Sole Survivor, Retold Tale, Dust Rock Blues, Parcel of Stardust, Fusions with Backup Plan Heavy: Rocket Launchers, Machine Guns, Linear Fusion Rifles Notable choices: Bad Omens, Zenobia-D, 21% Delirium, Hammerhead, Crooked Fang-4fr Exotics: The Jade Rabbit, Malfeasance, Izanagi's Burden, Vigilance Wing, MIDA Multi-Tool, Jotunn, Telesto, Graviton Lance, Polaris Lance, One Thousand Voices, D.A.R.C.I., Black Talon, Thunderlord, Sleeper Simulant, The Queenbreaker, Wardcliff Coil, Two-Tailed Fox, The Colony Hunters: Subclass: Way of the Wraith, any Gunslinger variant, any Arcstrider variant Exotics: Foetracer, Wormhusk Crown, Shards of Galanor, Liar's Handshake, Shinobu's Vow, Gwisin Vest, The Dragon's Shadow, St0mp-EE5 Titans: Subclass: Really, anything goes. Exotics: Insurmountable Skullfort, One-Eyed Mask, Ursa Furiosa, Synthoceps, Hallowfire Heart, Dunemarchers, Lion Rampant, Mk. 44 Stand Asides Warlocks: Subclass: Any Stormcaller variant, any Voidwalker variant, Attunement of Flame, and Attunement of Sky Exotics: Nezarec's Sin, Skull of Dire Ahamkara, Apotheosis Veil, Eye of Another World, Ophidian Aspect, Transversive Steps I hope this helps you understand your roles more, it's really not fun to have your role sabotaged by your own teammates resulting in a worse Gambit Prime experience. I hope you all read this and take it to heart when you jump into your next Prime match!

  • This is all great info but the large majority of people who need to read this probably don’t visit Bungie forums unfortunately.

  • I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: IF SOMEONE ON YOUR TEAM HAS FULL NOTORIOUS INVADER ARMOR ON AND YOU DONT, DO NOT TAKE THE INVASIONS UNLESS THEY SAY YOU CAN. The amount of times I’ve had my invade stolen by someone without any invader armor at all is crazy

I'm solid with whatever I go in with. I don't even have the armor sets. Had Trinity Goul and a sidearm and was able to still invade well. Memed people with tripmines too Victory is mostly based on my teammate's ability to not die. Lost one: dude banked one mote....lost 30

      • Good post. There is a problem that Bungie designs the daily bounties that puts teams into conflict with each other because all 4 people are trying to complete the same bounties. I have on full collector, I have a collector halo, I have the collector projection on my ghost and i flash it in fornt of each player before the match, and finally i use the collector emote to say "TattooedOni is collecting motes" in the kill feed. Then the match starts and I have 3 players all jumping in front of me to scoop up motes. It happens when there are 0 other collectors on the team. I had a team with 2 reapers and an invader. All we had to do was smash adds I hoover up the 20, they grab up the rest, we deposit together and invader invades. It wasnt the easy win it should have been because that isnt what happened.

      • Had a team with three sentries and one reaper. We destroyed the enemy team. When things like that happen some people need to step up and play outside of their set role. I let one of the sentries take bank and I went to collect motes with my sentry friend since the reaper was killing everything. Invaders didn't stand a chance and my sentry friend took care of the invasions on our side. We all still did with our roles are supposed to do (blockers, invaders) but we were more flexible.

      • Almost 3/4 of a year in, and people still post and write painfully long posts about a game mode that doesn't incentivize winning. You'd think everyone would learn by now. Outside of Malfeasance, there's no real reason to win Gambit matches. And that's a problem. People play Gambit to fulfill objectives, not win.

Nice essay lol. From what I’ve seen, what matters most is how good your invader is at heavy machine gun PVP. The whole gathering motes, summoning blah, blah, blah .... is just a giant waste of time. Bungie could’ve just cut to the chase and start every match like a gambit 3rs round death match, save everyone some time. PS: sry just came of from a Malfeasance reg. Gambit grind and I’m just about havin it with this shit. ...oof

Anyone else find 21% Delirium to be very underwhelming vs just using Hammerhead? Deliriums stability even with the masterwork stability perk is way less (especially being a high rate of fire MSG) than Hammerheads and Deliriums intrinsic perks don't seem to really do much. Maybe it's just me though and it's better than I think, who knows.

          • Most of the time, I find that collector set in a random game can be more of a hindrance than help. Some are good with it, but there are a lot who aren't. One game I even had 2 on my team, no problem, I wasn't wearing a set because they disabled sentry and I've done my bounties and only needed to kill a HVT, so they can go nuts. I would spam nova bomb over and over, and kill blockers, but these guys don't pay attention to mote count. At 23 and 40+ motes they would still try to hit that magic 20 motes, not banking for an invade. Game ended and they collected less than 20 lost more than 30. My other random team mate had 18 invader kills (no invader set), I had 6 invader shut downs, 40+ motes, 50%+ primeval damage and we still barely won... Gambit is fun but I'm starting to really dislike seeing that set.

          • here's how i play Gambit Prime if the Portal is active & i got a Super or Heavy i invade & wipe the opposing team If there's a bunch of Motes just sitting there about to despawn i collect them If there's Blockers draining our Motes & i got some Shottie Ammo then i Delete them If we get invaded and i Spot that sneaky Bastard then i Send him back to the other side of the Portal or i hide and let the time run out, plain & simple

                • Good advices but i gave up on soloq in gambit prime. Having a 4 stack is the way to go. Im sick of players stealing/camping the portal even tough they have 0 piece of intruder gear. Or randoms stealing motes to a collector, or just idiots doing mistakes like killing the 3rd wizard during an invade.

                    • I was the recipient of a petulant child’s hate mail because, as a sentry, I was doing my job and wasn’t collecting motes while guarding the mote bank, and shooting ads from afar creating motes to be picked up. But f**k me, right? It was no use explaining the concept of GP to this window-licker.

                      • I think the bottom like is that outside of the forced SotD, people don't really want to be forced to play a certain role. They want to just do what they need to do to win and, of course, have fun.

                      • GREAT Post!!! One other things for folks to consider.... STOP burning your super/heavy on the first two/three damage phases. Trigger the damage phase, shoot with primary/special for a few seconds and rotate to the next spawn point to trigger the second damage phase. This game is won by how quickly you can trigger the damage phases. If you can quickly get to four then you can just melt the boss. My team doesn't even bother with damage in the first three phases. Two will kill invader while the other two rotate to trigger damage phase. Typically on phase four our prime evil is about 75% and we melt him quickly after we kill the invader. IMO gambit prime is actually a lot of fun when you play with teammates who actually understand the game/objective. I know it's going to be a long round when I play solo and my clueless teammates burn all of their rockets/supers during the first damage phase.... Or I'm the only one rotating to trigger the next phase..... Or my sentry is invading while my invader is knocking me out of the way to grab motes......arg.... LOL!!!

                        • You make some valid points and i agree that eververse must be removed from this game, but Whether we wanted it or not, we've stepped into a war with the Cabal on Mars. So let's get to taking out their command, one by one. Valus Ta'aurc. From what I can gather, he commands the Siege Dancers from an Imperial Land Tank just outside of Rubicon. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on Freehold.
