I feel like a lot of companies are developing this really weird mentality where if their movie/game isn’t well received, it’s the faults of their customers. Just seems to be pretty common nowadays that bad quality is blamed on the people who the product is being made for.

Edited by JS5218: 4/1/2019 5:51:02 PMFan fiction usually is terrible. I say let the writers create their vision and if it sells it sells if it doesn’t it doesn’t. Once you listen to the audience too much the art is lost.

1 ReplyI think it's more of a societal problem where people lack the ability to take accountability and responsibility for their own mistakes. Maybe it's always been this way and I just haven't paid attention as much. I don't know.

34 RepliesLook at what’s happening with Star Wars right now. “Fans” have been throwing a tantrum that has been going on for over a year because they don’t like where the story is going. They want a fairy tale. Disney—-Home of Fairy Tales—-is ironically staying true to Lucas’ vision of Star Wars as a modern myth. There are bad films. Then there are good films rejected because people become overinvested in them, and think that the intensity of their emotional involvement should give them creative control. It doesn’t. Unlike video games, movies are not a interactive form of entertainment. Which means you don’t get them custom tailored to your personal preferences.

Well my take on this is the over abundance of entertainment that is consumed by us has developed a sense of jadedness the likes of what we haven't seen before, that is why they say it's on us, but really it's due to them trying to shell out a "new" story or game that really isn't "new" it's just rehashed in a different way and most of us, the consumer, are waking up to this reality and won't buy into this anymore.

"Millenials are killing golf!" "Diamond industry endangered because millennials refuse to buy!!" "Home ownership at an all time low due to millennials!!!"

Yeah. We should shut up and vote with our dollars while they're still relevant. Effectively put our money where our mouth is. That's the only thing any of these -blam!-s understand. They don't get it unless you mess with their cashflow.

To be fair, audiences can be really awful, sometimes for no reason. I'm not saying creators are always innocent, but it seems to me like audiences believe a product is either "literally the best thing ever" or "literally the worst thing ever." Not only that, audiences think it should be their way or no way, and get angry when an artist has different ideas, while simultaneously getting angry that "everything is the same!" Ignoring the fact that it's their fault everything is the same. My point? There are great artists, and bad artists. Good audience members, and bad audience members. At the end of the day, both sides need to let art be art. And audiences should be both objective and subjective in their evaluation of art, rather than choosing either hyper critical or hyper fanatic, depending on prior bias. And publishers need to let artists follow their own vision, instead of being controlling.

Isn't it more that vocally obnoxious and entitled fans are being told they are not needed or welcome. I feel that internet bubbles are slowly realizing how limited their reach and impact in real life is, especially as the American market becomes a smaller share of global revenues.

People that are also accepting a mediocre product in hopes that it would be better later on are also part of the problem

1 ReplyYep, that's why I'm going into that field to fix it

4 RepliesFlood a bunch of halfa@@... make a bunch of money off the numbskulls.. Name the last movie, music, tv.. etc.. that you felt was truly spectacular and well done. Like the director/producer really gave a crap. Me? The Dark Knight.

1 ReplyYeah, and they’re also trying to be as greedy as they can. The pinnacle of this is Article 13 in the EU. If you do as much even stream or take a picture of something you’d get sued for it. Companies and governments are just greedy as -blam!-. It’s gotten to the point where I’m starting to just get sick of the world.

Edited by OldboyVicious: 3/31/2019 7:19:52 PMI think this skit sums it up perfectly. I think it's hilarious, especially the trailer for the movie. But just in case you dont want to watch it. . . TL;DW:
Movie executives market research shows that their movie will be wildly popular, movie tanks at box office. Movie executives blame the public for lying to them and sues the public. The courts mandate that everyone is sentenced to one viewing of the movie.
Yeah I agree. I think the quality of those things are dropping too since literally every game nowadays has something wrong with it on release

4 RepliesEdited by ZoniCat: 3/31/2019 5:18:47 PM
I wouldn't call it a problem. More like a paradigm shift; Companies are no longer strictly adhering to the "Customer is Always Right" philosophy. It's the product of so many companies trying to stand out from the crowd by developing a counter culture from what the industry was in the 2000s, that the 2010s were composed of companies actually defending themselves and their products. This was mostly reserved to small studios and indie developers. Then the larger corporations caught on, and all, pretty unanimously, switched over to the new model. Problem is, many of them took it too far, to the point of disrespect. This is creating a newer counter culture, where the developers simply don't interact with the players except through riddles and very short, concise tweets. Look at Toby Fox for example, developer of UnderTale. Basically, both sides feel like their getting the short end of the stick, because the companies are trying to cater to changing times, but aren't evolving fast enough to actually keep up. That isn't to say that there aren't many times where the fans are just being assholes because the media spontaneously agreed that the product was "bad" and just repeat the same garbage over and over again, simply diffusing through different channels. An excellent example is the destiny franchise, where the consumer's opinion of the game seemingly changed overnight, going from "This game is awesome!" to "This series is terrible!" just because one, incredibly infamous youtuber said so. You can't blame just the producers for toxic industries; The consumers are almost always at equal fault, due to the nature of trade.
^Wyoming

It's more about the business nowadays rather than the value of it all.

I’m getting some software to start game development! What would you guys recommend? Thinking of a top down survival RPG....

It's not just the entertainment industry. It's society as a whole that is doing it with the "white privilege" crap, and the sense of entitlement.

2 RepliesHaven’t really seen that outside of Star Wars and Disney.

I’ve never heard that before. I can’t say I see the logic behind it either.
