What Problem Does The Last Word and Snipers Have in Common? The Flinch Mechanic.
With The Last Word returning, many people are talking about why the exotic as well as snipers feel bad/worse compared to Destiny 1. With Bungie asking for feedback regarding both, it's time I threw my hat into the ring.
The answer to both topics is really easy. It's flinch. Not just the fact that there's much more in Destiny 2, but also that it is no longer even close to as vertical. Linked is CoolGuy's video explaining how flinch changed in Destiny 2. It was changed seemingly to reduce the skill ceiling in PvP. If you are flinched while aiming at the head, your scope will be moved away from the head. If your scope is aimed somewhere that isn't the head, it will be moved towards it. Could go left, right, up, down, you get the idea. While I can understand the need to level the playing field in PvP, this well-intended change feels inconsistent and frustrating to every PvP player while also not even meeting its design goal in regards to skill. Put increased flinch that feels nearly doubled compared to Destiny 1 into the pot and you have one of the most frustrating mechanics ever in a shooter. Why do firefights with Last Word feel awkward in D2? This is why. Why do I feel like I'm caught in an earthquake when I'm trying to snipe? The flinch is far higher ,sure, but the fact that my scope goes in 30 different directions is hurting snipes far more.
My proposal is pretty simple, but also not an easy to implement one. Just revert flinch to a point of consistency again. In addition you could change unflinching perks to reflect this rework. With these two changes combined I wouldn't even bother nerfing flinch amounts on top of this. Doing all three at once introduces risk of Snipers overstepping their bounds (especially on PC.)
Many will hear the flinch discussion be brought up and will start their "here we go, another jerk who just wants no counterplay to snipers so they can get free insta-kills constantly" rant. Nice try, but no. You could make that argument if I was suggesting the complete removal of flinch from the game, but I'm not. I want this fixed, not removed.
Flinch was consistent and teachable to players back in Destiny 1 and I truly don't understand why anyone tried to fix what wasn't broken. The new flinch feels like a remnant of Destiny 2's launch philosophy of balance. Bungie has since then reverted nearly everything introduced in Destiny 2. Double primaries, 4v4 only, SBMM only, slow TTK. These were all fun-destroying philosophies that were dealt with in order to make PvP enjoyable. It's time that flinch 2.0 joined them in the graveyard.
