Why don’t I want to play Destiny anymore?

This is a serious question that I’ve been wrestling with for a little while now. I’ve been a diehard Destiny player since the Alpha and Destiny has always been the game causing me to miss out on others games. Even throughout year 1 of Destiny 2, as unhappy with the changes as I was, I still played. I was so hyped for Forsaken. They were FINALLY fixing all the changes I hated. FINALLY fixing the weapon system. Once Forsaken dropped I played nonstop for a good month and a half to two months until I hit 600. Within that time my RNG was TERRIBLE. Rarely getting powerful drops that I needed. It was a very un-fun grind. I initially stopped playing because of the exotic drop rate. After playing constantly from Forsaken’s launch until I hit 600, I received a whopping ZERO Forsaken exotic drops. That wasn’t as big of an issue when I was working my way toward 600, but once I got there it became a huge issue as that was the only thing to play for. But the real problem I’m having is in getting back into Destiny. I said I was going to start playing again when Black Armory hit but that ended quickly when I realized the new content would require me to grind the same old milestones for weeks until I was high enough to actually do the new content. So I went back to the other games I’ve been playing (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has been taking most of my time). And then I tried to get back into it again. And stopped again. So is anyone else having this issue? I feel like something is missing now. Whatever it was that made me want to play Destiny and ONLY Destiny is not there for me. I feel like Bungie overdid it with the grind and can’t seem to find that balance of grind/reward that Destiny 1 had. If someone else is having the same issue what is it that’s keeping you away? I love Destiny and WANT to play it but something is just missing.

  • I don't know, Destiny 2 has managed to keep me entertained and interested since it launched compared to D1 where I would take extended breaks that would be up to at least 2 months at a time. I like to think that D1 was the better game but how do I explain significant differences in playtime?
Seems to me that ya just burnt out and need to find another game to fulfil ya needs
• I am there with you man. I put more hours into D1 than I’m proud of. It was my favorite and pretty much only game I played. When D2 came out, I was so terribly disappointed. If it wasn’t for my clan, I probably would have stopped playing it a long time ago. But they kept me going. I stayed with it. Forsaken dropped and it felt like it was getting back on track. I was hyped for random rolls again. But dang has it gotten old quick. I find myself more and more dreading logging on to do the same boring ass grind for drops which most likely will suck and be a complete waste of time. Over half my clan doesn’t even play anymore. I pretty much only play when I’m asked by my buddy now. I really couldn’t care less anymore. Red Dead Redemption 2 is absolutely amazing btw. I highly recommend it for a refreshing reprieve from Destiny.

  • Because this game is -blam!-in shallow and you're burnt out on playing what is essentially the same content for 4+ years

I get this feeling everyday that I want to play destiny 2 so I get on my pc and launch It. Then I end up sitting there looking at my directory full of different powerful gear I could go get but I never do anything. I just sit there for a minute and turn off the game. It’s like I have the desire to play but then I realize the stuff I want to do isn’t really that fun to play so I don’t.

I've said it a million times recently across these forums... MILESTONE SYSTEM SUCKS. Chore lists SUCK. Being restricted to the same CHORES every week as the only way of leveling up SUCKS. Raising the level cap by a small 50 was stupid. The solution is to raise the level cap by 500 and remove the softcap and have all legendary drops give us +1/2 power Let us level up by grinding whatever we want. Let me play Crucible all day instead of thinking "i should do the 3 daily story missions or else i wont level up". I went into Forsaken wanting to play Crucible with the new stuff. I spent 10% of my time playing Crucible and the rest doing milestones to level up. Now I can't even be bothered with playing Crucible because the PVE grind has gotten me no exotics that I actually want to use in Crucible and I'm burnt out. The best exotics are all behind quests so the RNG exotics don't feel good to get, minus a small few which never drop anyway. After 3 weeks of grinding milestones and finding 1 duplicate exotic I'm just done at this point. C B F

        • Bungie listened to people that said they wanted it to be only for hardcore Destiny players. I’m like you. I didn’t play D1 alpha or beta but I did start at release and was a constant player. It looks like others responding to this post are similar. When did we become “filthy casuals?” I would argue that we were the base of the Destiny player community. I don’t know why they went so far away from us. People that play every evening and on weekends can’t get the drops. It seems the people that get all the drops are the ones that play all day every day. Apparently these are the players Bungie has decided to cater to. Two things I see as a problem. The first you touched on. The rewards (drop) system sucks. It sucks bad. D1 launch Forever 29 has nothing on this new system. The second is the new raids suck. You can’t have a mistake on the team and spectate as your teammate pulls a clutch phase completion. You have to rely too heavily on mechanics without an emphasis on fighting. I used to raid 3 times each week. I have characters that didn’t complete Leviathan or Eater of Worlds and none ever completed Spire of Stars. I completed Last Wish once and haven’t touched the new one. They are no fun. I don’t feel like doing them. The raids kept me coming back week after week. Then when challenge mode was added in D1 and all raids were updated they were even more fun. I don’t even care that I don’t raid in D2. Just my opinion on why I don’t like it any more. By the way AC Odyssey is a great game. In addition to the season pass content there are several free content drops with added quests. I will be very happy when they release the updated AC3 as part of the season pass. That’s a whole game included with the season pass.

          • I'm in the same boat as you, played yesterday desperately wanting to enjoy it but I can't. A few things that annoy me. The exotic drops annoy me or rather the method of getting them annoys me, I got wavesplitter yesterday from killing a high value target. Never got one from a nightfall. I like them to be rare but they should drop from end game activities much more frequently. The boring level grind is so depressing, every powerful engram is either 1 light higher or more likely the one piece you don't need. I like a grind and d2 vanilla lacked that which was a complaint from many, bungie as ever take it way too far. They are unable to find the happy medium. Their nerfs are so inconsistent it's unbelievable, the speed in which they nerfed the titan banner shield compared to the rampant nova warp. The time wasted doing simple things compared to d1: picking up patrols, navigating menus, deleting shaders, loading anything, picking up motes in gambit is a pain, Just going to a forge takes a ridiculous amount of time. They seem to find ways to inflate time spent on the game. The new DLC style is so lazy. Somehow they are unable to make content so they change it to only "end game content". I may be one of very few but I like story missions and a good build up to end game. I was very foolish to buy into the annual pass. And the biggest thing that annoys me more than anything....... bungie decided to remove all our weapons from d1 and start a fresh, then they start selling back said weapons/armour as content. How lazy can they be. Forever reusing and reskining content and hoping that we will gobble it up (although my wasting of money proves them right). I get the impression that they are always pushing the boundaries of how little they can do for as much money as they can get. Pride is no longer a consideration purely money. I only complain so much because I loved d1 so much, I wish I could get the same feeling from this game. I know I can still play d1 but I've played the hell out of the content. I could go on but if you have read all that then I've bored you enough. Peace

            • I would have to completely agree. I still play, but it feels like I’m clocking in and clocking out. The fun factor has been exhausted for me and I can’t put my finger on it. Things feel like a chore. Also all the little things add up. Something as simple as only 1 fast travel in the dreaming city, gotta be honest, kinda annoyed me. For some of us our time isn’t valued or worth playing. The progression system and class trees....suck. Sorry fellas, it sucks. Give us DEPTH and choice. Increase the loot pool, mods and weapon perks. Allow more customization. Charging people for shaders is just stupid and annoying. Banshee went from 25 tokens to 50 tokens to 100 gunsmith materials just for a package. No armsday either. Timers. Just get rid of them or offer different difficulty and the option to add timers for people who like that style. I’m just going off the top of my head here, so pardon the fact I’m all over the place. It seems that in every aspect of the game there is some sort of debuff or stipulation or something taking the fun out of the activity. The NERFING OF EVERY AWESOME WEAPON BC OF PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN, I think is a big one lol!! I hope they fix it. Doesn’t seem so. Thanks for posting Guardian. We feel your pain. Happy holidays everyone.

              • The fact that all our weapons/armor will probably be deleted for the sequel doesn’t help in my opinion.

              • We need the choice of choosing either a weapon or armor piece for each powerful gear milestone completion as well as rank up. I dont know about others but now that we have random rolls back I only care about weapon drops. When you get countless armor pieces from milestones and prime engrams with a couple guns sprinkled in it seriously bums me out. This combo'd with the ridiculous price of 100 weapon parts to pull Banshee's slot machine (which the cost needs to be cut in half) sucks.

I’m in a similar boat. I play good session from time to time, but the game has gone too far for me. I used to love PvP, but that was ruined for me by the terrible match-making changes so that’s out. I can’t build my character the way I want, because of infusion costs. Then on top of that leveling up is RnG based as is doing core tasks like completing triumph seals. Then there’s the terrible drop rates of Forsaken exotics. And lets not forget time gated content and timed bounties, timed seasonal quests that force me to play intensively right NOW rather than at a realistic pace I can balance with real life. I’d rather do 10 resets with no limit than 5 within a season for example. The cherry on top is the how thinly spread black armory content is. I haven’t quit, but I have no desire to play daily anymore - too many things feels like work rather than fun. This is my experience and my reasons for not Feeling Destiny anymore.

              • D1 rise of iron and the stuff after that was where destiny was the most fun to play. It always felt like u were progressing. Black armory has nothing for anyone not on the grind train. I usually play every night for an hour or two and I'm still below 610. The raid should have a higher light cap but not being able to access the forge when that is the only new content is a real bummer. It's been almost a month since black armory came out and I'm just getting to an appropriate power level to play it. And what is with the constant horde mode in every dlc. Warmind had escalation protocol, forsaken had blind well and now black armory has forges another horde mode. I still like to play the game and I still enjoy it. But this ridiculous power level grind is getting on my nerves. Bungie has to create a balance between the two. There woudnt be a need for a power level grind if there is enough content to grind. The grind should be in activities and their rewards. Not the power level climb to play said activities.

              • I whole heartily agree that something is missing I tried playing recently after a short break, I just came away feeling like I wasted my time as I ultimately achieved nothing in the 3 hours I played.

                • Same exact situation bud, only I’m 590 so I know I’ve got at best a straight week of grinding to hit adequacy for any of the new content. This is Nofungie.

                • Same here, I guess after grinding for two months and watching the perks and weapons I liked all get nerfed and seeing the complete acid bath that Quickplay has turned into, the toxic unbalance in Comp, the afk teammates in Gambit, there wasn’t much reason to play anymore. No new strikes, or Crucible maps, and the raid weapons are meh. Then they come out Black Armory and they want me to do that same content grind all over again? It’s a great game but if you don’t put in the work you fall behind and it becomes a job that doesn’t pay. The game needs new content, decent balancing, and don’t nerf weapons and armor perks that take weeks to grind for, that will bring me back.

                • Same here, I do love Destiny but there were to many games out at the same sort of time that monopolised my time and we’re more fun, Spider-man, AC Odyssey and RDR2, etc.. I grinded our Redrix and crucible burnt me out for a bit.. I actually love crucible but jumping back in the other day it was just shotguns everywhere, we all can use shotguns, they don’t take a lot skill let’s be honest, but I prefer to 1v1 and shoot it out, I admit I’m trash but I play for fun and don’t take it seriously.. hopefully we get a new meta soon that’s fun.. it’s just opinion really.. anyway Merry Christmas Guardians.. have a good one..

It's the tireless grind that ruined this game. Exotic quests feel more like a task, and when you turn it in, blam! Another task followed by 4 more just to get an exotic that doesn't even feel worth it Everything is an unreasonable grind now in D2, and it's ONLY so we stick around longer in hopes we buy SOMETHING from Eververse with Silver. Plain and simple, they got greedy and made half the players hate the game in the process. They read these constant posts and move on, not giving a shit...no responses to the actual problem. They'll probably release a free mini DLC called an Update like the April one in D1...but it won't fix the problem and will actually make them look worse in the long run. So if anyone reads this reply in 3 months, NO I AM NOT PSYCHIC! Sales are down 60% for a reason...they don't care at all, say they do, apply a bandaid and not fix the actual problem, rinse and repeat...you know, like the grind.

                • I'm literally just killing my time til anthem comes out. That said, the forges are actually a little bit fun. But again, the major issue is time-gating shit. Like, two weapons per week? Hoe about you list all the -blam!-ing weapons and i get to choose which ones i want to do. How about you unlock the last -blam!-ing forge. How about you let me play the -blam!-ing quest to get TLW back. No i have to wait for you to spoon feed it to me. And my brother started playing again and its taking forever for him to level up because he is limited to a set number of powerful drops per week. So he cant even enjoy the new content with us. Also, raising the light cap by 50 was the absolute most -blam!-ing stupid and pointless shit. Like, why? Why the -blam!- raise the cap 50? Oh i know, so that only your cuckolded streamers will be ready for the raid week 1 and everyone will watch them do it instead of enjoying it themselves.

                  • I feel you on this. Lately, I don't even want to grind strikes or get powerful engrams anymore. I just play a couple of crucible games then go play smite. On top of that, i haven't even attempted any of the raids because I just don't have time, and there are too many requirements. Even being in a clan, i can't find time. But yes, something is missing but we'll keep playing and not playing, etc.

                  • I’ve had this issue with D1 and D2. With D1, I played non-stop for maybe a year, but I had more important priorities. When I would play, I realized it was meaningless unless I had a friend online, and it became very stale. The rewards were few and far between, and the only joy the game brought was from those rewards or from having funny conversation with my friends. Fast forward a few years and I download D2 while it was free on PS4. I got the Forsaken expansion immediately and began grinding. It was fun, fresh, and I began to forget why I quit playing D1 in the first year. Now, three months since downloading the game, I no longer looking forward to coming home and playing the game at all. I don’t feel the need to complete the Dawning, I haven’t touched Black Armory, and I don’t know when/if I will. Spending so much time to “earn” random digital rewards has once again become very distasteful to me. I’ve nearly completely left gaming because of this. BFV, SSBU, and so many other games have become a chore and I no longer enjoy them. I’ve gotten older and the pleasure is simply no longer there. My mind has decided that the digital rewards and the killstreaks, or the unlocks and victories aren’t worth the time invested. Get your buddies together and go have a drink. Take a break from games and don’t treat them like a chore. Destiny has quickly become a toxic little blot on my PS4.
