Just replied to another thread but wanted to break this out for anyone feeling like the grind to get to a decent level for the Forge is just too time consuming. First, this isn't a defense of Bungie's design choice to make us have to grind more of the old content just to play the new stuff. This is simply meant to help anyone who wants to optimize their leveling time so they can start completing the Forge ASAP.
I often hear people complaining that it's taking them a full week and only increasing by 3-4 light levels. The most common reason for this is that they're doing just the activities they want to do and ignoring the most optimal route. This is fine, but you need to be prepared for a longer grind if you don't want to do everything that nets you the best progress.
It took me about 4.5 hours to go from 600-610 on my first Character over the past two days. There was a little luck involved here, but not much. Here's how I did it.
1. Dreaming City - Blind Well, Ascendent Challenge, Weekly Mission - 5 Powerful Drops - 1 hour
2. Nightfall / 100K - 2 Powerful Drops - 15 minutes
3. Daily Strike, Crucible, Heroic Adventure, Gambit - 4 Powerful Drops - 1 hour
4. Daily Story x3 (A Deadly Trial) - 1 Powerful Drop - 20 minutes
5. Weekly Strikes (2 more after daily) - 1 Powerful Drop - 25 minutes
6. Weekly Gambit (2 more after daily) - 1 Powerful Drop - 25 minutes
7. Weekly Crucible (4 more after daily) - 1 Powerful Drop - 45 minutes
8. Weekly Flashpoint (50% remaining after daily) - 1 Powerful Drop - 20 minutes
9. Spider's Powerful Bounty - 1 Powerful Drop - 10 minutes
Along the way I also had 4 Prime Engrams drop, about one an hour, and no exotics.
That's 21 Powerful Drops and you'd still have the weekly Clan, Ikora, and Dreaming City bounties which all could have been done along the way here. By the end my lowest piece (Arms), was 606, and my highest was 614, with an average of 610. I'll probably be able to get my second character to 613-615, and my third to 615-617 if I wanted to level them all this week. This is about average in terms of the weekly light grind I was experiencing pre-Black Armory. A steady increase of about 10-15 light levels weekly by completing the regular daily and weekly challenges, excluding the raid and dungeon, which could net you another 2-3 levels.
I beat the first forge 3x this morning at the reduced 625 power level using nothing but random matchmaking and each time had at least one team member below 610, and us other two barely above 610. Even at a modest 1 hour per day there's no reason anyone coming into BA at 600 light couldn't have at least 1 character at 610 by this weekend.
Granted they still should have had something more for us to do so we didn't have to grind on day 1, but all things considered it's not that bad.

1 ReplyLargely depends on RNG. The thing that makes me sad is finally obtaining gear, mods (that are very rare ) and usable gear. Then been forced to shelve it again for the same mismatched gear but at higher light. The infusion system is terrible.

2 RepliesWait? What about Last Wish raid? I shot up to 600 on all my characters insanely fast from it before. Are the drops above 600?
-
4 RepliesSomething is wrong .... or this is a flat out lie! Since when do you get any Powerful Drops from Blind Well??? All Blues at 379 .... yeah level up baby :)
-
What sacrifice did you give to RNG mothman?
-
6 RepliesI’m at 542. What’s my game plan chief?

3 RepliesI understand the optimization of doing Dreaming City first but I didn’t notice a difference in the drops this week. When I was going to 600 they would be 4-5 above my average. This week they were 2-3 above average. So was everything else. The main problem that hit me was in 5 DC drops I got 3 Tigerspite and 2 Sleepless. Since I could only raise power in my primary then my heavy my average didn’t go up and they all dropped at 603. The I did the other activities and got a decent spread of drops but I still ended everything but Gambit and Crucible at 606. It’s not so much the lack of activities to level up as it is the RNG of everything. The RNG needs to be removed and we should be able to get something like a Powerful Token to turn in and choose an item from a vendor inventory. Then I would have been able to spread out my stuff and make progress.
There was a little luck involved here, but not much. Here's how I did it.
If you truly believe that there was not much luck involved, then God have pity on your soul because luck plays a very big role in how much progress you make regardless of the order you complete the weekly / daily milestones. I have been running basically the same order of activities ever since I hit 540 back in October and while I've had some very good weeks with increasing my overall PL, I have also had some really bad weeks where I barely made any difference. Take this week - of the powerful engrams / prime engrams that I've gotten so far 2 kinetic 1 energy 1 power 2 helmets 3 gauntlets 1 chest 1 boot 1 class item Of all of these, it was the two kinetic weapons that had the highest increase PL drop... Everything else was no more than 5 above my current PL at the time. The best that I can do is 608 and that's having to use items that doesn't fit my play-style. As long as RNG plays a big part in making any significant horizontal progression, especially the crappy RNG that exist in Destiny 2, then luck plays a very big role.

However I feel horrible that this is what modern gaming has come to. That in order for me to get the most out of a game I potentially have to force myself through activities I don't enjoy or may even downright hate. That playing only the parts of a game I enjoy could be contextualized as a problem. This isn't a game anymore, it's a second job.

If your rng isnt complete shit.

Thank you.

4 RepliesSo in other words so the normal activities..
-
1 ReplySo the answer to increasing light level is to run your weekly and daily activities? Not exactly news worthy.

It only works if RNG on ur power dont kill ur drive to get to 610 first.
