The Age of the Empire lasted only two decades compared to the centuries of the Republic Era. By the time the Republic was in its death throes, Sidious gradually amassed power through his guise as Sheev Palpatine, a Naboo politician whom the Senate elected to the post of Supreme Chancellor in 32 BBY. At the same time he manipulated thousands of disaffected star systems into seceding from the Republic in order to form the Confederacy of Independent Systems, resulting in a political crisis that culminated in the advent of the Clone Wars by 22 BBY. Using emergency powers bestowed unto Palpatine by the Senate, the chancellor authorized the creation of the Grand Army of the Republic. However, throughout the conflict the Republic became an increasingly militarized state while the Senate's authority eroded under the growing influence of Chancellor Palpatine, whose rise to power was complete following the execution of Order 66. Across the galaxy thousands of Jedi Knights were betrayed and killed by the clone troopers under their command. With the Jedi Order all but destroyed, Sidious further marginalized the Senate while the armed forces underwent a massive expansion program, thereby strengthening the Emperor's rule over the galaxy. The Empire stood virtually unchallenged until numerous insurgent cells united to form the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Galactic Civil War commenced with the theft of the Death Star plans on Scarif which, in turn, led to the destruction of the Empire's superweapon at the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY. The Empire redoubled their efforts to suppress the Rebellion, securing a major victory on Hoth in 3 ABY, only to suffer a devastating defeat a year later at the Battle of Endor in which Emperor Palpatine was slain at the hands of his apprentice Darth Vader, who also died shortly after turning against his master. With the Sith extinct, the Empire fractured into several remnant factions that were dominated by Moffs, admirals and generals, many of whom ignored Grand Vizier Mas Amedda's authority as a proxy Emperor. As a result, the Empire evolved into a stratocracy through which Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax rose to power. Ultimately, it was Rax who seized control over the largest faction of the Imperial Navy; and therefore, he became Emperor in effect through his new position as Counselor to the Empire. Under Rax's rule, the Empire made its final stand at the Battle of Jakku where the New Republic emerged triumphant in 5 ABY. Although several remnants continued to resist, the Empire formally capitulated to the Republic by signing the Galactic Concordance, a peace treaty that marked the end of the Galactic Civil War. During the era of the New Republic, war reparations and disarmament treaties reduced the Empire to a rump state that consisted of a provisional government on Coruscant as well as Imperial territories in the Core Worlds and Inner Rim. Unknown to the Republic, however, the Emperor created the Contingency, a plan to destroy the Empire and ensure its rebirth in the Unknown Regions in the event of Sidious' death. As a result, the First Order was formed by a group of Imperial officers, nobles, and technologists who sought to reclaim the legacy and glory of the Galactic Empire. In time the First Order evolved into a military junta led by Supreme Leader Snoke; like Sidious, Snoke was a master of the dark side of the Force, although he was not a Sith Lord. The First Order completed its rearmament program by 34 ABY, granting it the capacity to seize control of the galaxy through military might. Construction on Starkiller Base was also completed during the waning days of the cold war. As such, the First Order used the base's superweapon to annihilate Hosnian Prime, the Republic capital, along with the New Republic Senate and a large portion of its defense force. Even without Starkiller Base, which had been subsequently destroyed in battle by the Resistance, the First Order stood poised to conquer the galaxy in the wake of the New Republic's collapse. By then Snoke had been assassinated by Kylo Ren, the grandson of Darth Vader, who envisioned himself at the head of a new galactic order—one that would surpass the Empire, the Republic, and all that came before.>
