im planning to make the switch to the master race from a ps4 pro this holiday season with a good mid range pc. i’ve just about settled on the evga 1070 oc for a graphics card, especially with the price drops, but i’m still conflicted on what to buy for a cpu and therefor a motherboard.
i’ve just about narrowed my options down to the ryzen 5 2600 for $220 (my prices are from amazon.ca) and the intel i5 8400 for $280, which is almost the price of the ryzen 7 1700x. everyone i have talked to has told me that the difference between the two is not that much for gaming, and that AMD is the way to go if you care about price to performance. however, the difference in price between the two is certainly there, and the Z370 chipset motherboards are overall more expensive as well. i wouldn’t say i am tight for money on this build but i want to make sure i am making the right choices and not spending unnecessary cash. so can anyone tell me if the extra ~$100 for an intel build is a good idea, or if i can manage with AMD? any help is appreciated.

Intel is generally considered better for gaming because most games are not optimized to use a large number of cores. However, the difference in performance doesn't directly correlate to the price and you'd get mostly the same experience on a good AMD as you would on an Intel. Feel free to go with AMD.

I use Intel just for processing power for pretty much everything.

It's easy AMD = garbage

2 Repliesafaik intel cpus are better at doing 1 thing at a time; just gaming for example. ryzen cpus really shine doing multiple tasks like gaming and streaming or editing. but even on single activities ryzen is only slightly(!!!) behind. also ryzen cpus are quite a bit cheaper than their intel aequivalents. and ryzen cpus come with solid cpu coolers in contrast to intel cpus. but dear pc people correct me if im wrong with all of this.

Nah just go for Ryzen. It's gonna last you a lot longer.
is there any reason to buy Intel cpus instead of AMD?
Because you like spending more money? Reality is that Moore's law is dead. The big leaps are over. Get the cheaper option. You might say the cheaper option is a $200 console. You'd be right.

Well it depends on what resolution, refresh rate and games u wanna play 1440p would push a gtx1070 to the max and will be the bottleneck not your cpu Stepping down to 1080p this wont push a gtx1070 to the max and in turn your fps will be bottlenecked more by the CPU But if fps is most important most likely intel I would recommend checking the youtube channel: Hardware Unboxed Search for CPU benchmark This could give you more detailed info on what CPU would fit best for what you want these guys often make 30+ games benchmark videos

Not to much of a difference in gaming but some other thing intel does better in.

I would upgrade to an amd once i can or my 4590k dies or gets really slow.

1 ReplyFor the most part, AMD CPUs are less expensive and the performance difference between it's Ryzen line and and Intel CPU aren't too big. My brother uses an 2700x and I run an 8700k and you wouldn't know which one was which if you sat down in front of both (well except the fact he has a 1070ti and I just have a 1070)
