Ok the

This new comic only showed us one thing: Ana is a homosexual. Usually I dont mind homosexual characters as long as their only character trait isn't "I'm gay". I liked the stuff with Wei Ning and Erianna, but this felt forced. I felt nothing but mild annoyance because of this. There wasn't good buildup with any of them and it just seemed as if their trait was "they're homosexual". I want to like this, but I cant. Bungie, fix your writing. Please.
dont get me started on the fact that Ana should be dead
Edit: I didnt expect this to blow up lmao

  • Here is the problem I see. This game has nothing to do with sex, nothing to do with relationships and everything to do with shooting aliens and saving the solar system. Why we need any sexual references straight or gay is completely beyond me.

    • This topic is absurd. Is this really that big of an issue?

    • The key issue which is raised by OP is not the fact Anna is gay. It is the fact the comic plot revealed no pertinent details about Anna or the Destiny universe OTHER THAN Anna being gay. The topic was one about the plot or lack of substance in the plot but quickly developed into a straight vs gay debate which I think is unfortunate. With respect, the revelation of Anna's sexuality does not humanize her. It had the exact opposite effect because that was pretty much the only thing we really got. Our window into Anna's past is limited to her sexuality and the loss of her lover which the writing seems to make out as a driver for her actions. But it doesn't quite fit with what we have read our heard of her character. Her desire to know about her past was not due to her lover. Her dead lover supported her desire to know. I remember when my character was ressurected, I was confused af and trying to survive in a scrap heap against a squad of Fallen. So how did it all start for her and her realisation of who she was? Guardians aren't supposed to look into their past so what was the discussion like with her ghost when she embarked on this journey? She was at twilight gap (a legendary battle) so she wasn't always consumed by her desire to know and go off alone. What was going on in her mind? Was she torn by a need to protect humanity over her personal quest? Questions go on and on. The answers to them would humanize her. But there is nothing in the comic except she had a non guardian lover who died helping her at some point and for a very brief period given the length of time she must have lived. She fights and gets closer to Hellas basin but if you cut all that out and replace it with the opening Cutscene of her in the dlc, it would not make an inch of difference to the comic. So we got nothing except Anna is gay. This all made that detail feel surgically grafted to fit an agenda rather than build her character or the story. From memory, there was no great backlash from the community when Devrim's sexuality was discovered. It was very well done in fact by revealing it in general banter if we had the patience to sit with him in his tower. It felt organic. A disclosure between friends. Not in your face with a billboard while you are locked in a room. There are other characters that are gay in Destiny that have been accepted with little comment. There is no good reason to jump to the viewpoint that this is all a fuss being kicked up by straight homophobic intolerant men coming to the realisation they haven't got a hope in hell with Anna Bae. There might be some of those around and inappropriate comments have gone back and forth, but the substantive issue which the OP raised (which is all about bad writing in the comic) is legitimate and overshadowed. Did the comic add to the lore or tell us anything meaningful about the Destiny universe at large? No. Was Anna's sexuality a good part of the plot in what it revealed and how it was executed? No. On the end dialogue of the Lake of Shadow strike, I had always thought it was Hawthorne speaking and her being enamored by Zavala and Devrim's talk about cooperation between guardians and the militia, not Amanda Halliday cooing over the two men. Perhaps I'm confusing it with a different piece of dialogue in a different strike. If it is the dialogue I am thinking of, it certainly is not an example of double standards over acceptance of hetero over homo sexuality. I guess I should YouTube the strike to check on that piece of dialogue.

        • If the quality of the writing was truly what bothered you, then you would have made a post complaining about them focusing on a lost love story rather than developing the character in other ways. But you didn't, you framed the whole thing in terms of her sexuality, which clearly shows what you really care about. The writing isn't good, but Ana being gay is far from the real problem.

          • If you've had enough with diversity - When's your complaint there are too many non-white human characters in the game? Because that would be racism, just like saying 'Usually I dont mind homosexual characters as long as their only character trait isn't "I'm gay" ' is homophobic? Whether you intend it to be so or not it is. I'm not in any way trying to be mean. Speaking as a queer women, my queerness is just there, my character traits wouldn't be 'queer' or 'is a woman' they'd be: 'enjoys video games, DND, is inquisitive, strives to be respectful and open to ideas, stubborn, hard working, sarcastic, pessimistic'. Ana Bray has character traits, she's this lone-wolf who's tired of being alone, she's 'defiant, intelligent, she's a risk-taker and awfully optimistic' in my humble opinion. Her queer-ness (just as mine) doesn't factor into those things, they factor into her personal character that probably doesn't drive any of her character choice beyond the kinda 'not wanting to work alone' because lo and behold, she used to work with someone and the companionship presumably made it easier. The writers chose that companionship to be a lover as well as that's a natural conclusion and, you know what? Some people, would like more lesbians in the media, however far in a corner they're tucked away, however little details we get about discovering their lesbianism and knowing about their equally cute GF. More lesbians please. I'm not here disagreeing that Bungie has bad writing - but when you specifically call-out that them making her a lesbian is, well, what 'triggers' your complaints...you're leaving little space to debate your motives?. Would you want a several chapter epic about how her relationship bloomed? (Asking because I would not be against a Destiny Themed Sapphic Romance Comic, that's all I'm saying) I mean, they kissed, Ana's other character traits don't mingle with her queerness for her to have been presented in a homophobic way, which isn't your concern tbh but just throwing that out their that she doesn't fit a lesbophobic trope to the best of my knowledge. Would I like more fleshed out LGBTQ characters in media? Yes! Am I gonna get it because people like you complain about diversity when they 'add in' their queerness - even though these characters are not theirs and it was approved down a line of many people? Probably. So if you don't mind Homosexual characters, and you yourself are not LGBTQ (And I've made a big assumption, but the fact you say you 'dont mind' queer characters...implies a certain hetero vibe) you don't really get to complain how they're written in and presented. Like sure, complain about how overall, terrible storytelling that effects the overall game - yes, I agree, I am with you. You singling out how the Gay portion just doesn't cut it for you? Nah, nah. No. It looks bad right? Targeting something for its explicit gay-ness?
I'd like to thank the games industry for giving us Ana Bae and Tracer in the more recent years. Bonus points coz Ana is coded non-white. POC LGBTQ, we're doing it lads, we're invoking fear in the fragile ego of the Gamer(tm) because not everyone is a straight white dude. (this is a joke please do not be offended, or do, because it's a joke about the under-representation of LGBTQ and POC folks in the media).
Long response is long, but the gist is, shhhhhh, just shhhhhhhhhhhhhh. She's Gay. There's nothing to complain about the Gay part, the Gay-ness wasn't written 'incorrectly' or 'inaccurately'. There's no need for it to develop either because we're getting a snapshot of her life (presumably) mid-relationship, so we as readers have to just accept it. I was mad they retconned her death, but reviving her and confirming her for Gay? Best move yet. (Again a joke, an innocent joke...but seriously she is Ours Now.) Also considering the comments...oh boy, oh boy, we got some salty Guardians here upset at the lack of whiteness and diversity(tm) in their Fictional Space Fantasy Video Game...just to them though, this is for them - the planet is composed of many different people, the fact that media now is portraying this is accurate. The world is diverse. Stop using hte word like a damned crux and be productive. Rather than crying your boohoo notions...You still see white+het people on TV and in your Video Games? Then nothing to fear, they're still existing. Folks are just finally admitting people beyond that exist and thus are including them in the circles you're used to acting like you solely occupy. When you don't and never really have.

All Destiny characters are gay Zavala = Gay Ikora = Gay Ana Bray = Gay Amanda Holiday = Gay Devrim Kay = Gay I don't mind but seriously outside of Cayde the entire cast is pretty much gay. There is alot of beta male influence in this game also.

Homosexuality aside, how did this comic contribute to the lore of the expansion in any way? Personally, I don’t care what her orientation is. I want to why she was chosen to be a guardian, or mor about her early history with Rasputin. If Bungie wants to retcon the D1 lore, then fine, but they need to offer up something halfway substantial to replace it. In stead all we find out is that she really likes kissing kitties. Honestly, I cannot take anymore stories like we were offered with these expansions. Not only was the dialogue written at an elementary reading level they had the depth of a kiddy pool. Bungie really needs to put on their big boy arm floaties and jump in the deep end. Because when I thought they really needed to go darker and mature, making a character lesbian as her entire backstory in not what I had in mind.

                      • Someone may have already said this on this thread, but I'd like to point out that our dear friend Devrim Kay is gay/bi/pan too. In his vendor dialogue he references his partner Mark and how he misses having steamed clams with him by the fire and stuff like that. I don't know why it really matters. People are just people, regardless of which way they swing.

                                • I'm sorry dude. This isn't a problem, this is your problem. Normal people do not care. Hell. Cayde writes in his diary to someone named Ace who he assumes is his son or rather we assume is his son. He could be anyone or in Cayde's own words he could just be someone Cayde made up. Nobody says that feels forced. They're trying to create an emotional bond to the character. They are far from the first people to do it with a sort of "letters home" technique. And they won't be the last.

It wasn’t a backstory though. It was a story on how they got to where they are. Ana and her lover where clearly together for a long time. When she died she was just lucky enough to be able to kiss her goodbye. Just accept that we didn’t get a backstory of when she gained her light, met her lover, etc.
