I don’t understand this games leveling system...

Okay, so, I am still here playing Destiny, grinding for weapons, trying to stay involved in the world in case the fall expansion is good. BUT, I am just baffled by this leveling and power progression right now...ahem... So, I’m playing Heroic strikes over the suggested 350...and still completely getting melted...technically I’m doing pretty good, but my teammates can’t stay alive...anywho, Brawler doesn’t one hit kill the smallest enemies. Void singe sucks unless the enemy is using it...then it’s one hit kill...SO, I think...well, I guess these will be fun a few weeks from now when people are actually leveled for this. Technically I AM leveled for it, but it didn’t really change much...and I wonder... So, their design is for us to play a couple hours a week to get milestones to power up, for like...a month, THEN we can enjoy the game? Okay 🤷🏻‍♂️ THEN, I see that the nightfall is still 270. “AH, sounds fun! I’ll solo it!” Cause ya know, no matchmaking...lo and behold, I guess the enemies are scaling up 80 POINTS to my level cause it’s still an absolute grind to kill anything. I make it halfway and decide it’s not worth it. What is it guys?! Does power matter or not?! So, naturally I turned it off. I guess I’ll play a couple hours a week for the next two months to eventually get close enough to help in Escalation Protocol. Who knows if anyone will be playing by then. I’m one of the most hardcore supporters of this game, but what’s even going on? I think the fall EP is make or break for this game, even the hardcore chaps like myself. Here’s hoping it’s amazing. EDIT: happy update cause I’m salty. Three milestones turned in today. Snipers on all three and the last was LOWER than my current light. Is there RNG in milestones now?! Complete trash. Waste of TIME. Which is valuable. Time gated RNG milestones as the only way of leveling is a disaster. Iron Banner doesn’t even level you anymore 🙄 fine Bungie, if you want me to stop playing, I will. You’re trying your hardest.

    • The thing for me is by Thursday I’ve finished all the milestones and there is nothing left to do. Crucible isn’t fun at all in D2. So what else is there to do?

      • Yes it sucks, I only play to get milestones, quests and Nodes. I just made it to 252 after 3 weeks of resets.

        • Bungie has completely rigged this game against solo players. It's purposeful and deliberate. The only way to currently power up and gain access to a significant amount of the most useful and powerful content is through cooperative play with coordinated fireteams. Players who would prefer not to do that are, by default, shut out of a significant amount of content. There's very little realistic chance of attaining, say, Sleeper Simulent as a solo player. As it stands now, those people who are willing to devote a significant amount of time trying to land three associated, related fireteams on the same Mars map at the same time have any realistic chance to get any of the exclusive Escalation Protocol content or complete quests like Sleeper Simulent or, probably the next level of the Polaris scout rifle quest. Trials, Nightfalls and Raids are also clearly formulated to deny solo players a fair and reasonable chance at attaining a significant amount of content they've paid to access to. Those of us who prefer to play this game solo and who have paid for all currently available versions of this game have paid for reasonable access to this content but by virtue of the way Bungie has set up the leveling system and rewards system in this game, a significant amount of this content remains unfairly beyond our reach. We're in compliance with the terms of service, we've paid our money and yet we can't get much of the content we've paid to have access to because Bungie continuously, obstinately and unfairly refuses to create a universal matchmaking system which would equitably give all players, regardless of how they choose to play this game, a fair and reasonable chance to acquire this content. There should be class action, possibly through the legal or legislative systems to force Bungie to make this content available reasonably and fairly all who have paid them money for access to it.

          • It's called padding and nerfing. At first the throttling was secretive to keep people playing making them more likely to participate in their slot machine and now they are just doing it out right. The progression system is now more inaccessible and broken than ever. Other changes with the update like Exotics work good steps forward but overall the DLC itself was not an improvement.

            • People keep defending this game in the comments and I am just at a loss. I play weekly and the leveling is [i]painfully[/i] slow. There is literally no incentive to play heroic strikes. Raid looks dull as all hell so I haven't even touched it. Exotics drop at legendary level. If you combine powerful gear...that is...when the game decides that a piece is high enough level...it either levels up to randomly high numbers or goes up just one level. [b]One[/b] [b]level[/b]. Crucible can be fun but once you lose a match the next couple seem to be guaranteed losses. Escalation protocol is actually pretty fun even at a low level like myself but the lack of a dedicated area like PoE, CoO, and Archon's Forge makes it very difficult to find people and just feels sloppy how it is put together. The lack of strike specific gear and easy to obtain exotics without having to do the raid is also depressing. In the old destiny even after fully leveling all of my characters I still came back every day trying to get my hands on cool weapons and gear to add to my collection. Everything in D2 is so glossy and yet so bland. Best thing is shaders tbh but even those get tedious since it takes a billion glimmer to deck everything out. All in all I play this game as a fun pastime a couple times a week but it completely lacks the soul of D1. [i]Quick side note:[/i] The constant random freezes and crashes have killed the experience for me. I play the latest games on maxed out settings with virtually no issues so it isn't a hardware issue. Please bungie...just fix your game.

            • Haven’t played properly since December. But an old rule of thumb was. Below light level take double damage. Deal reduced damage. Above light level take normal damage deal normal damage.

            • You call yourself hardcore but don’t understand basic game mechanics this far into its release and you’re only 350 so you clearly don’t understand the leveling system very well or you barely play. Light level acts as a entry key to activities. Once you hit the recommended light level from then on enemies will scale directly with you. As a 345 running normal leviathan (300 recommendation) you wouldn’t notice a difference if you were 385 or 305. When you are below light level you take more damage and do less damage. All activities work like this.

                I don’t even think I’ll be around for the fall DLC. Bungie needs to get the balance right now , not fix in 3/4 months time , make the game harder ok , but least let us get stronger , giving me the same item for completing all my milestones doesn’t help, my clan m8s have already stopped coming on , I’m really not far behind them Adding one 350/360 drop in 3/4 strikes is to little to late , by time it’s added most players should be 360 light anyway so what’s the point ? But sure it’s ok bungie is listening, Well at least they say they are

                  • Tried pyramidian strike on heroic for an hour... It nearly broke me and my controller. First round of randoms quit immediately, second round went to the boss and wiped twice then bailed. Third round went one round then bailed. I seemed to be the only one committed to beating it. After another 45 mins on just the boss I finally threw in the towel. The new leveling system isn't great. It's not terrible but it absolutley needs to be tweaked. Bungie said they wanted to bring back that feeling from d1 when you ran into the level 20 enemies in the cave. You guys remember that? I almost sh** myself when I ran into that knight with the ??'s For level. This isn't like that. This is just frustrating for no reason. I ran into an enemy with a recommended power level of 350 and at 347 I was melted by a red bar with 2 shots. This is artificially making the game harder with the least amount of effort. I want to fight for victory, not get pub stomped by some punk ass goblin when I walk into a room. Not fun, not what I consider difficult, not what any rational person considers a challenge. World first for raid lair was over 6 hours, this week? 16 mins. Why? Well that's because of the artificial difficulty of the level scaling. If this doesn't show that then I don't know what will.

                      basically is timegated, the engrams that allow you to lvl up are limited per week, everything else decripts lower

                      The game scales your power level depending on the actual activities power level. Which means, you can‘t one-shot every enemy in the game with any gun. Power does matter though. Because you take a lot more damage if you are below the recommended power level. So your power only means that you can now participate in [any] activity without having a significant disadvantage. But your damage output will be scaled down to a level where a potential fireteam as a whole can have fun, and not having one guy instant killing everything (that is the reason why Bungie designed in that way in the first place, which is a common thing for shared world/social games, offering matchmaking activities). Some of the modifiers (mainly the negatives) in Heroic strikes have higher values than in D1. Blackout for example, kills you regardless of your armor stat or power level. It is a 20x(!) melee multiplier for any enemy. In D1 it wasn’t that high, I believe. Without an overshield ability or full masterwork armor set (30% damage reduction in a super) it is nearly impossible to survive a single melee attack from a normal enemy. Boss melees kill you no matter what. So therefore your power level means nothing when certain modifiers come into place.

                      • Haha...yeah - I was messing around the Nightfall solo yesterday and was amazed at how much of a bullet/damage sponge that first yellow knight is in the cave by the Warsat. Was absorbing all my bullets so I gave him four Titan slams in rapid succession - which probably only took his bar down 10%. Not really getting that power fantasy feeling....

                        • If i remember the way the power level scaling works, It only favors the enemy. For example if you are 330 and the enemy is 380 you cant do damage. (Remember hive ogre and knights in destiny 1 cosmodrome depths, during beta). Each 5-10 pts closer in light your damage scaled up and damage received came down. On the opposite side you don't do any more damage or take any less damage, because you are higher light than the encounter (ex: 350 in a 270 encounter). I know this was how D1 worked. If power level over a given encounter worked for the guardian, we would all walk around patrols like gods. Hell doing the leviathan raid which is capped at 300 would be the same.

                          • Although i feel your pain on how difficult the game is now, i don't mind it. It should be hard, regular strikes are easy and is a good way to get you to 340. That being said, Heroic strikes are designed to be hard and only drop gear a level or two around the soft cap. It is how it has been designed to make the " Grind" longer. When DLC 2 was released, Bungie said that getting to 340 would be easy, then going from 340 to 370 would be difficult and then going from 370 to 380 would take just as long as going from 340 to 370. The scaling has always been way above what the recommended level is to play the activities. And unfortunately when you play with randoms, them dying a lot is just the risk that is taken in doing so. you just don't know how good they will be. Destiny has always been a game that has been dependent on the Fireteam, and has always been more fun playing with friends. Sadly, the solo player, or people whom don't have a clan or group of friends to play the game with, are the ones the suffer the most.

                            • Prestige and heroic stuff is not all that hard tbh, depending on modifiers and such, but what’s killing me is the amount of bullet sponginess everything is. I mean seriously when it takes multiple mags and the shields are still up or your yellow damage is like 120 to 175. If it was new content I might be more inclined to not get irritated l, but it’s the same old crap we have been doing since launch.

                            • I'd absolutely love to hear from the Bungie employees who play tested the Nightfall/Heroic Strikes. And, then tell us all about completion rates for the general population. And, tell us what exactly 270 and 350 mean.

                            • I was going to ask the same kind of question. I'm at PL 348. I jumped into the 270 NF solo and it felt like the enemy was at 350 PL, what's gives?? Will I ever feel powerful in this power fantasy game?? It really seems like PL means absolutely nothing. Its just a number to reach.

Who actually thought it would be a good idea to remove radar AND allow any enemy to one hit kill you? Sadists? Sleeper can wait. 👋

                                i have to say im getting deterred now from playing by the absolute lack of progress. when i do get an exotic engram its always targetting one of the two armors that i have that are 350 and 353. nothing at all for weapons or the other slots so i am stuck at 346/347 max. not enough to do heroic adventures solo on mercury, and not enough progress to keep me playing. before warmind, when i was stalled it wasnt for long then i got up to 330 and stalled again until end of april time when i started to get close to 335. but i kept getting stuff for things i didnt use that i could have infused those with and it kept me playing and hoping. im not getting that now. this time i went up 11 and stalled, and stalled, and am still stalled. its frustrating and disheartening. but it wont make me expose myself via voice so i can do raids. (sorry but i have trust issues and some of the forum have made me firmer on that. you want people to raid? get rid of the toxic players). the clan engram bug hasnt helped, but the fact i cant even get my exotics, even ones i dont use, up beyond 345? that makes me feel i been running on a treadmill while i see others up at 370 triggering escalation and making my time on mars either a forced wait, forced to get on my sparrow and go to the other area and come back after, or leave mars. or waste ammo, because i have zero chance to do the second stage of an escalation, even if we complete the first. i know infusing things i dont use like the new autorifle or DARCI or sturm wont raise my level - but at least its some progress that gives me some hope that MAYBE something will drop for my arms that i can infuse, or for crimson even if its only 1 point raise. nothing rewards is making me not want to play the game at all, and i really like mars too, its up there with titan and the EDZ as my fave place, even though there is only one ghost scannable i found there.

                                  • they want long grinds so they dig scaling however it makes gaining levels and light levels pretty pointless, as it doesn't provide anything except more loot and cosmetics I agree that leveling, and light leveling, that makes content easier is MUCH more compelling
