Favorite mechanics in horde modes?

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive, from the Lost Outpost! Hopefully “alive” is the state I remain in, as those fish crawling up from the ocean look very, very mad.. Uh.. Molly, how’s that “calling for evacuation” thing going? Molly: “Papika’s phone keeps going to voicemail, sir!” Ugh, why did I even buy—nevermind, get your mech ready, and make sure you protect me from those crazy looking fish! If we go down.. I’m getting this post out there, first! Horde modes can sometimes be the most fun you’ll ever have, or they can also be complete drag.. For me, horde modes are among the most variable type of game mode when it comes to “fun level”. Everything else usually stays pretty consistent with others of its (sub)genre. For that reason, I thought it’d be a neat post to hear what mechanics you, yes you, the general populace of the gaming sunforum, like, and dislike, when it comes to horde modes! So, here’s a tentamissile launcher! Fire away! (preferably at those crazy fish!) Tl;dr? Here’s my point! Favorite mechanics from/for horde modes? My answer;
My favorite horde mode ever is Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run, and I think the reason I like it so much is the uniqueness of how you actually win. You have regular Salmonoids that you’ll want to splat (kill) before they splat you, but other than that you can completely ignore them. Meanwhile, you also have an array of Boss Salmonoids you have to take out, each one needing to be dealt with in a unique way. Theoretically, you can avoid most Boss Salmonoids, too, but they’re your only source of Golden Eggs, and you must meet a certain quota before time runs out, or you lose. Plus, their wide array of attacks will usually doom you if you ignore them. I love the pressure the Golden Egg system puts on the team. There’s no “let’s just find a good spot and survive” because doing that will usually net you a whopping 0 Golden Eggs, and the timer system, rather than the usual “kill [X] amount of enemies” makes for some awesome moments when you’re rushing to get that last Egg in the basket with 4 seconds remaining. I also like that there is a definitive beginning, and end, to it, rather than infinite waves. Another one I like is CoD Zombies. Arguably the only good thing about CoD, this horde mode is pretty standard for the most part, but there are always cryptic puzzles to figure out, and I love it. It’s a great feeling to know exactly how to progress on a horde made game.
• I like it when it's not the main game but thrown in as a segment. Resident Evil 4's cabin scene is a good example. It was one of my favorite parts of the game.

  • Dungeon defenders has to my most favourite: Being Co op, having a charming atmosphere and a satisfying feeling that comes working together, with the right traps and charecters. For example: - Mage and monk complement each other so well: the mage's barriers act to remove elemental immunity from all who attack it and by placing the monks slow + electric aura and finally the mages Fire tower = a perfect combo at blocking off all points of attack. There are so many possibilities and combos. There is also somthing satisfying when you're conversing with the people in the room and forming strategies at how to tackle each level. Being able to unlock different crystals, color them, colour yourself, tame pets, take on crazy weapons, cool designs for foes and humour that fits the simple nature of the game. I simply love it all.
The sequel... That's another story.
DLC'S are top notch too and defentatly great value. Even if they where limited on consoles.

    • GOW has pretty much the best horde mode I've played though I haven't played that much of them. Building fortifications is pretty much a must.

      •
set start skulls on
Halo Reach firefight: the fact that you could make it into whatever you want, like bottomless clip, infinite evade, energy sword/sniper rifles, with only hunters and brutes as enemies.

        • Maybe it's the fact that it gets harder and harder as the waves go. It just gives the mode that bit more adrenaline and really makes you want to co-operate with your team in order to survive a few more waves.

          • In CoD WaW (back when it was about surviving on Zombies), I enjoyed the mechanics that the DLC maps brought. Perks that cost a lot but made you stronger, traps that killed tons of zombies at once, and upgrading your weapons on Der Riese by linking all the teleporters. Also, the Mystery Box that would change spots when you bought it too much so you'd have to rethink your strategy. In Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, Up Your Arsenal, and Deadlocked, the Arena combat levels was essentially Horde mode and I enjoyed them. I liked how each challenge was different and had different twists to them. Going Commando had mid-round bosses and cage matches, Up Your Arsenal had an invulnerable turret that would spawn and constantly fire at you, and Deadlocked was when they cranked it up to 11 and had so much unique things they brought.

            • Since Gears of war 3 the horde modes in those games are quite literally tower defense now with you and your team getting points from kills that can be soent to fortify your base with weapons, distractions, defense, bonuses and such.

              • Hmph... Titanfall 2’s horde mode was actually pretty fun. The fact that they included Titans was actually pretty cool, and I like how it had different types of enemy titans. What really made it intense was during the last rounds, where literally every enemy was a titan, and you could just keep on summoning Titans left and right and placing sentries... I miss it already...
