I have a dumb question. Can you make progress towards the ornaments in any game mode or does it have to be Iron Banner only? So far I've just played Iron Banner but that melee grenade one I probably won't be able to finish this time around if it's just Iron Banner. Just want to know if I can work on it after Banner is over.

After Iron Banner is over you wont be able to work toward earning them again until the next Iron Banner.
