Honestly it is starting to become to much i always pondered how we went from such good and raw story telling to this childish cringy joke and humor story telling we have now and apparently the new writing team is to thank
Instead of embracing and expanding on the good lore in the grimoire they want to push their pg dumbed down lore as some sort of a ego boost im assuming ret conning most of the things the grimoire had established in the first place
Prime example is making vance a mysterious and intising character pushed to a stereotypical stalker/obsession character for the sake of humor i guess well guess what making cool characters in the lore into jokes IS NOT FUNNY some people actual care about the tone and characters
Another glaring issue is the entire curse of osiris cinematic campaign they were actually proud of that the most infamous guardian to ever live reduced to a mission giver like are you joking barely any interaction or serious/complex story telling just sagira and her annoying god damn jokes and cringy humor
This is a disappointment i rarely get this upset over a video game but the lore being butchered like this is really starting to get to me i know bigger problems exist but seriously if possible get the grimoire writer's back or even have some of the community youtubers such as byf give suggestions all his ideas and speculation sound FAR FAR COOLER than anything d2's writing team has pooped out and for the love of god STOP WITH THE JOKES WE ALREADY HAVE CAYDE not everyone needs to be a corny and cringy joke character.

There’s a writing team? Huh.

9 RepliesI could be a Bungie writer. Failsafe: Uhhhh, you umm, like, totally need to watch out... Ghost: Oh don't be such a silly goose. Cayde: Guys, shhhhhh. Keep shooting. Bad guys everywhere... Zavala: Guardian, lets remember why we're here. Stick to the mission. Ikora: Zavala's right. Now's not the the time. We need to focus on pushing forward. Shaxx: BRRRRAAAAGGGHHHH HA HA HAAA! I'VE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE IT!

Even Cayde has come from being a cool character in The Taken King to a goofy one in D2.

25 RepliesI still don't understand why people were surprised that someone who was the leader of a cult turned out to be a fanboy.
-
Now you can add how terrible the story of the comic is at expanding what is already in game. So many mistakes that it seems like the comics are entirely separate and non canon. The way Osiris left the City in part 2 is in no way what was said in game.
-
2 RepliesThat was one thing I did not like about Destiny 2, everyone seemed to have jokes. Like they were trying to be like Cayde-6. I was thinking what the hell is this shit, everyone is quirky and out there so the seriousness isn't there anymore cause hey its all a joke. It works with Filion-6 but not the others like the crashed AI on Nessus, and then Osiris and his Ghost seriously. Stop it

1 ReplyComic just reconfirms this post needs more upvotes.

2 RepliesYeah whoever wrote the “until it didn’t” or “until they did” line should be fired and never be allowed to write stories again.
-
They should be forced to replay their trash, on a daily basis. 8 hours per day.

1 ReplyEdited by Mental Surge: 2/1/2018 9:36:23 AMDestiny has always had an arrogance to it (especially it's writing) that was NEVER justified. Destiny 1 had the worst storytelling of any game in history all things considered and that is not up for debate. It's a fact. It doesn't have the excuse that games did int he 80's where there were limitations in the hardware, it doesn't the excuse of a lack of resources or finances, it doesn't have the excuse of a lack of experience as it was made by BUNGIE. The expansions made it better sure, but vanilla destiny was the absolute worst piece of storytelling I have ever seen by far. Even if we ignore the fact that there's no context for anything and we have no idea what we are even doing or why in Destiny 1, the game takes itself WAAAAAAAAY too seriously. The exposition scenes are hilarious at how much the devs wanted it to be taken seriously. Like having someone you don't know anything about talking to you about something you know nothing about for some reason in yet the game tries to make it seems like a serious and touching scene, when at this point you have no idea what is going on, who you even are, what you are doing, what you are fighting against, etc. It's just nonsense. And of course the dialogue and story seems to have been written by a child. You are part of the LIGHT and you are fighting the DARKNESS for some reason, with the help of a ghost - whatever the hell that is - so you can do... something. How can anyone take the cinematics where the speaker is rambling on about the light overcoming the darkness seriously when you don't even really know what either of them are? The point is that the writing in Destiny was utter garbage to begin with. The bottom of the barrel. Sure it got better, but anything is better than vanilla destiny. Destiny 2 is garbage and the writing is garbage too but it is still a huge improvement over.... whatever the hell vanilla destiny was. What I am saying is this: You should be mad about the garbage writing, but you should not be surprised.

I bet I could make a story better than the story writers could for all of Destiny 2.
-
Management too.... Keep Deej

The worst thing is that over 4 years nothing ha changed, the writing teams are so full of themselves, apparently, that they refuse to improve, learn, grow, just like the rest of the company, there has been no progress, just one huge, disappointing, regression.

2 RepliesLooking back, Destiny never had that much of story nor was it well written. The Taken King and Rise of Iron had interesting moments, but the story telling was average at best. However, it was all supported by strong grimoire writing that expanded on the story in-game, as well as ask further questions. Since D2 removed the grimoire, all thats left is the average/mediocre in game story. In short, by removing the thing that bolstered the story, Bungie shot themselves in the foot and put their average storytelling skills on display.

11 RepliesEveryone is trying to be the next "Guardians of the Galaxy". This is literally the truth with all media entertainment since the movie came out. The movie was such a surprise hit (and in turn a huge cash cow) that everyone is copying it. This is literally what the millennial writers think everyone likes. Guardians of the Galaxy works in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. It does not work here.

The real issue here is the lack of punctuation Otherwise, I agree

3 RepliesHumor works better when balanced against darker elements. Whatever happened to mystery and exploration? I could give to shits about grimiore cards-- I never read a single one. Make the story stand out through plot twists, tragedy, and heroic moments of redemption.
-
There is a bit too much comedic relief and I think there aren't enough recorded vocal lines. It becomes annoying hearing the same things again and again. The overuse of humor makes it slightly worse.
-
3 RepliesExactly! The only form of comedic relief we should have is Cayde. I have not laughed once at any of these character's shitty jokes.
-
1 ReplyAgreed! I miss the dark creepy vibes of destiny 1. Now its more like a Saturday morning cartoons writing.
-
Exactly this. I know the game is rated T so there are limitations in how realistic of topics they deal with but a more serious tone and plot constructs with more thought than a Thomas the Train episode would go a long way.

Honestly it is starting to become to much i always pondered how we went from such good and raw story telling to this childish cringy joke and humor story telling we have now and apparently the new writing team is to thank
. . . and you think you’re a literary critic? Wow.

2 RepliesBrother Vance sucks but in a way that I appreciate the characterization of a narcissist clinging to Osiris' coat tails. Other than that, yeah, the Osiris DLC is incredibly under-baked and infantile. Not much better than the main "storyline". I can't say the original story of Destiny 1 was much better but it at least raised intriguing questions. D2 is just... fluff.
-
Its almost like they took our feedback about the story telling in D1 the wrong way. We didn't want a less complicated story, we wanted a less complicated means of actually hearing said story. Instead they gave us a basic "They're bad, we're good" storyline with the tone of a spy kids movie lol

2 RepliesEdited by ObitBookfest: 1/30/2018 10:57:16 PMI just don't get why the writers went in this direction. This is a story about failure and redemption. The guardians lose everything and then have to stare their oblivion in the face. I'd argue that to a reasonable extent this premise should be scary and oppressive. It should have been an underdog story with the lives of your people riding on your shoulders. I simply don't understand why they chose this premise if Destiny 2 was going to be the "funny" one. I'm not asking Destiny 2 to go in the complete opposite direction and be the saddest game ever, but I feel like it's premise is wasted in it's current state. Some people blame the writing staff's ego, but personally I think the issue might be a lack of faith in their own work. I think it's easy for a writer to commit halfway to a story and then give up on selling the plot in a believable way. A quick way to excuse this is to be comedic and self-referential, creating a narrative that obnoxiously jabs the viewer with an elbow, remarking "Hey there pal, we think this game is pretty silly too. What idiots wrote -that- part, am I right?" I'm painting with broad strokes here, but I think it's warranted. Entire planets like the EDZ and Nessus are made unbearable when the broad majority of dialogue that plays during their missions involve at least one comedic relief character. Overall, I feel it's very hard to escape the constant attempts at comedy and the game seems almost completely disinterested in pursuing any other method of storytelling or character development. As a result, the story beats don't have any weight to them and the jokes lose a lot of their context. That's just how I felt playing it, though.

14 RepliesThe dialog in that giant shrieker strike makes me cringe every time. Tako speaks like a cowgirl. And that: "They're playing with forces they don't understand." line is a blam-ing embarrassment.
