Am I the only one completely underwhelmed by Masterworks?

I see posts where people are excited to get them or have gotten the combo they were hoping for and I get it can be fun to get the new shiny item type, but I can't help feeling "this is it?" the entire time. As far as I can tell it's just a small boost to normal weapon stats such as handling, range, etc - and I get that that can be nice, especially on certain weapons, but it just doesn't really seem to compensate enough for the static loot? I just don't see this "fixing" anything. I'm a strong believer that the game will never reach its full potential with all gear being the same, and this just seems like such a minor, trivial change. I don't feel nearly as incentivised to grind (compared to D1) nor do I feel like they are contributing anywhere near what they did before. It just... it seems like the absolute bare minimum possible for Bungie to be able to say "we did something you wanted!". I'm really, really not trying to complain just for the sake of it and I know there are PLENTY of other, bigger issues with the game... it just feels like this was the patch that was meant to fix some of our larger concerns and that it isn't going to do that. It feels like in ten years this franchise will be best when played in reverse; starting with the last game, then this one, and ending with D1. It's crazy that taking that route will actually give you new and more exciting content as you move between games.

  • I think they are more beneficial for pve due to the orbs..I can finally use my super frequently. Get a whole team using one and it's just plain fun.

  • The only cool part about the masterworks weapons is the orb generation imo. Other than that they’re meh

  • The only impressive thing about Masterworks weapons is the orb thing. Otherwise they’re just another D2 uninspired unimaginative underwhelming meh moment addition to the mountain of boredom. I can’t even be bothered to grind for them tbh

    • gosh those masterworks weapons should have real perks on them and the game should drop perks like mods and you choose which one you want to put on. no stupid rerolling rng bs. you work up a perk library and put them on as you please...

    • I played a few hours the other day to get enough cores to make my Nameless Midnight a masterworks version. Went to a patrol zone to test it, created a few orbs, and then shut the game off and went and played something else.

      • I'm pretty sure the drops rates are bugged as they hardly seem to drop at all I think I've gotten 3 out of I don't know how many packages milestones and engrams turned it seen a lot of people having similar issue

        It's a fancy way to disguise cosmetics under a thin layer of stats.. every usefull stat/weapon combination is locked out ^^ But turned out the orb generation is better than it should, since I can produce orbs for myself? Cool but will be nerfd ..

      • Yeah, they suck. Bungie could've fixed the problems with no random rolls in D2 by making ALL legendaries "masterworks": Add two custom perk slots per legendary. One with a stat change (+10-15 stability, +10-15 range etc.) and one with a perk (counterbalance, hidden hand, outlaw, third eye, LitC etc.) And simply giving you more super per kill would've made it not necesary for the orb generation think. I think Bungie wants D2 to die.

      • I find it odd that Luke Smith was talking about working on ways to make the 10th drop of a weapon more interesting when the system was already there working fine in D1 with random rolls. How many wasted dev $ and time have Bungie spent fixing something that wasn't broken in the first place.

      • The stats are worthless, but the orb generation is crazy good. If you have a team using Masterworks weapons, then you'll get your supers incredibly fast in PvE. It's not perfect, but it's not terrible.

        Nope, you're not alone. I was already skeptical of the system because there was no way Bungie was going to make it decently strong to the point where it caused imbalances. So we get this half-assed system where "+10 Magazine" doesn't mean 10%, it means different things per weapon class, and usually barely means anything at all (woooo a whole 3 additional rounds for my AR, 2 for my SMG). +10 Stability? Compared to what, exactly? If it's applied to the [i][hidden in game and only visible on community webpage] [/i]base stats of the weapon, again, it's not going to be a noticeable improvement. The ONLY good thing about Masterwork are the orbs on multikills. That's it. People are being bamboozled by numbers and dopamine hits when they see the masterwork filigree splash across their screen. This is yet another in a long line of examples of how D2 has jumped the metaphorical shark for the sake of balance. They're too constrained by their balancing to make masterwork something truly unique or game changing. Outside of making orbs, most people won't even notice a real difference between a MW version and non-MW version of the same weapon.

        • 1. D1 was virtually the only game with random rolls on weapons. 2. the community constantly complained about random rolls for 2 years. Conclusion: You might think otherwise as you are entitled to your own opinion, but this was quite literally a really good alternative. If they took the time could they come with something better, yeah maybe who knows. Nonetheless, with the feedback from the community they had no choice but to take it out.

          • Masterworks are great but it should have been more. The masterworks mod should have been expanded where Bungie could separate perks into the masterworks and make it a grind to get mod perks.

            • The main problem with this game is that there is no gjallarhorn. There’s no gun that makes you feel super powerful, that people spend even months trying to get it. By trying to balance the weapons too much, they’ve created a power vacuum in the weapon pool. And they desperately need something to fill it in. Prometheus lens began to fill that in, but we all saw how that went...

              • The stat boost isn't the point. Its just a token way of customizing and giving the weapon an invididual character. The real meat of the change is the ORB GENERATION. It seems to proc very easily in PVE, so it is a performance-based way of significantly reducing super cooldowns.....which is something we've all asked Bungie to do. I'm looking forward to my first strike with a fireteam that is fully stacked with them. People are going to be tripping over orbs.

                ive gotten quite a few of them now and all i can say is.... WTF. the orbs don't last long, maybe 30 seconds, so you can't exactly build up much with them, especially since they are at the point of KILL not the point of standing when killing, unlike super orbs. the stats seem... meh. velocity on a rocket launcher is nice and all but honestly don't see much of a difference from masterwork to non when using it. breaking them down to get 1 core (4/5 times) and then 2 cores (1/5) is sad as well. they aren't THAT common where "10" is easy to come to with these deconstructions. sorry to say but their 10 year plan is failing. In fact... none of my friends plan to buy the "next " thing from Destiny. Destiny 1, fool me once, shame on you. Destiny 2, fool me twice, shame on me. Not happening again. Make GOOD content, and maybe you can earn some real money, instead of dealing with returns.

                • Honestly what did you expect? everyone to have Prometheus lens level broken guns? the masterworks are good; not great but good they, give you a small reason to grind. this is the first time testing something like this. its like lord of wolves from d1 but then they forgot about it and never looked at it again. on a different note the reason they[bingie] are not making strides in this game is because all the youtubers and us on the forms are giving pretty good feed back but if they take any of our suggestions they cant say "we[bungie] made this" they would have to include the ideas of the form rats and youtubers. and bungie hates sharing credit. but hey this is just one mans opinion.

                  • Yes except from a couple salty trolls or people who havent used it yes youre alone... I mean srsly it drops Light Orb's that by itself is quite an improvement secondly it adds a bonus to your item which btw depends on its mod, type & balance and thrid but not least it tracks kills which is a neat lil bonus although not important its nice. You can reforge hoping to get the desired stat but stats are not its most important feature. Anyways you can sail in your own sea of salt along with your pirate crew of trolls all you want.
