I understand that he was meant to bring about a complete control of the universe for the Vex, but so did every other major Vex mind. I guess what I'm saying is, what made him different?

Panoptes in Greek mythology was a giant with one hundred eyes. And the Infinite Forest is almost a sort of panopticon where Panoptes can watch simulations of all reality.
-
He just is
-
Nothing is bad nor are they good, it's all perspective, we see them as evil, they see us as imperfect equations to be wiped out to achieve their goal
-
I think anything that threatens humanity or the traveler is considered to be bad from a human perspective. The Vex are robots, and these robots have a directive: to reduce everything to it’s simplest form. I don’t think the Vex are really evil. I think they’re just trying to do what they’re programmed to do. Maybe if we figured out how to rewrite the programming then they could be stopped, or even made into allies.

4 RepliesHe stole my sweet roll. Then he simulated an infinite number of realities where, in every single one, he stole my sweet roll... and the guards do NOTHING about it. Anyway, that's why I put him down.

Edited by PatsterUSAF: 12/13/2017 8:48:19 PMIf you were named Panoptes by your parents, you’d probably be bad too.

10 RepliesOsiris explains it quite plainly troughout the whole campaign part: Panoptes was able to find a way to merge all futue outcomes into the same result: the destuction of life and light. All simulations Osiris was able to run ended up with the same result unless Panoptes is destroyed and the only ones able to do so are the Guardians, as it is stated multiple times trough the game that Vex fear the impossibility to simulate the actions of Light-powered fighters.

Because the Vex so far have only succeeded in taking 1 planet from us. In that one planet they were able to simulate much more and as a result effect much more than the vault of glass. The vault of glass had a far better control over time and manipulating it. But it was on a much smaller scale being limited to just the vault. Panoptes was responsible for how mercury ended up and as a result probably was partially responsible for most of what's happened vex wise in our system.

Edited by WiErDScIeNcE11: 12/11/2017 4:39:29 AMEach vex unit has a main function, Cyclops are defensive turrets, hydra help relay information, in this case, Panoptes main function was to over see the win for the vex and to simulate the best way to do so, then take the simulation and apply it to the real world. That’s why he is special.

Because....reasons. I've stopped trying to make sense of Destiny's story at this point.

3 RepliesMama says Panopteses' are bad cause they have allllll them teeth... and no toothbrush.
-
Because he had control of the infinite forest and pretty much was mercury’s core. And he kinda looks like a robot oryx.
-
Why is this game so bad?
-
2 RepliesHe's inside of a reality warping infinite program that simulates an infinite number of futures and pasts. Oh and he controls it. But as a boss fight he was pathetically easy. 10/10 for visuals though
-
2 RepliesWhat made him different was he wasn’t just a giant hydra

1 ReplyCan we have more threads like this?
-
2 RepliesI always imagined a little panda when they talked about Panoptes until I saw him/it in person... Is there more Vex lore around? Would be interessted if the Vex thend for such cute names (or Osiris was having a laugh)
-
3 RepliesWhat buildup did it have? All of the other DLC baddies had some sort of buildup. They also had lore to go deeper with their respective characters. This thing had none of that. It’s bad. We must stop it. The end.
-
Did you not see how big and scary he was?
-
I assumed it was because unlike other Vex, he was able to home in and "see" Osiris' light. If the Vex mind can "see" light in simulations it can readjust its simulations to account for it and potentially stop guardians from being able to foist its plans. Hence why it "won" in a specific simulation which made Osiris go banaballs, and lob Sagira out of a gate for us to find.

8 RepliesI like to think that maybe the Vex aren't bad. Maybe they see all of us as a threat to the universe and want to rid the universe of said threats.... Humans destroy not only the atmosphere that we live in but each other, Fallen, taken, and cabal are no better. Maybe the Vex are tired of all the nonsense and wish to cease all existence other than their own to restore absolute peace to the universe they live in???

Who was Panoptes again?
-
He was actually close to success?
-
I mean, it has the same goal as the rest of the Vex, but it is different. The Vault of Glass is a limited reality-altering complex, where reality can be altered within it. The timelines all intersect, and Atheon filters out anything that is against the Vex's vision. Panoptes is working a different part of that same puzzle - it simulates reality to try and find the timelines for which the Vex achieve their end goal. Unlike Atheon, what Panoptes does is applicable to the universe as a whole. It's like playing Chess against someone who has seen every possible move you can make and will make before you ever sat down to play the game in the first place. Without Panoptes, the Vex cannot use the Infinite Forest to its true potential, much like the destruction of Atheon prevents the Vault from being able to perform its function for the Vex. As for whether or not the Vex still retain all the information on these timelines, one of the Io adventures seems to point out that only certain frames (Minds) hold data - likely Panoptes is the only frame capable of retaining all this information, seeing as its function is finding all timelines for the Vex to succeed. And it also is likely the case that in no successful Vex timeline Panoptes is destroyed, because its existence is instrumental in their success.

2 RepliesWho is Pantopes? And who the hell is Fenchurch... The annoying accent lady with the EverVerse store wont shut up about Fenchurch

Nothing. He was a problem that was created and solved within a couple story missions.
