FOV slider on console??? come on guys.

so first of all I'd like to state that this post is in no way a negative one, more of a constructive criticism type thing. so, we all know what FOV is.. don't we? well if you don't, let me explain. (check out the video for a great explanation) Field of View is, at its most simple, the amount of degrees that you can see from your point of view. The human eye naturally has an almost 180-degree FOV, with about 114 degrees of both eyes overlapping, and 60/70 degrees of one eye accounting for peripheral vision. why is a high FOV important you ask? wellllll let me explain. players on PC, with the higher FOV, have better spatial awareness. They peripherally see what is normally hidden (off screen) to the console player. Therefore PC players get more information about what is happening in the space and they are make better tactical decisions and have faster reactions. Many people think PC players have better reactions because of a better-suited input device for camera control (a mouse) but it is also thanks to this interesting fact. most games on PC allow you to adjust the FOV, as well most fps games on console! a few to mention are Doom 2016, Mirror's edge catalyst, Borderlands 2 the handsome collection, Battlefield 1, and Titanfall 2. destiny 2 on PC of course has an FOV slider, how come D2 doesn't on console? we seriously need this, it improves the gameplay experience in every way, Imo we should be asking for this. so, I'd like to see a response from Cozmo on this, if anything.. let's get it trending boys and girls Edit #1 Wow! I really didn't expect this post to go anywhere, thanks for the feedback. I'd also like to say there's no reason that we cannot have an FOV slider, there any too many FPS games on console that have them, not to mention most of these shooters get a stable 60fps.. but we don't live in a perfect world, so you know, 60 frames on console destiny isn't going to happen. Edit #2 Let's keep it going guys, also. For some people stating that higher FOV would make the game run slower, that is fairly true, but it would barely affect the performance of the game itself, very minor fps drops. You can test this with various games on PC and even Console. With increased FOV the engine will render more objects at a time, but it will not make much difference. You guys do realize FOV sliders are on console games, right? Even ones that just came out recently that probably no more or less graphically intensive than D2. Edit #3 Another more important reason for field of view sliders is personal health. There are people that get sick from improper field of view. Things like headaches or motion sickness. You can change your position to the display but of course that isn't always viable. From - Bigcorry Edit #4 The FOV in destiny is truly shocking, I suffer from motion sickness, and I literally have to sit eight feet away from my 27" monitor, for an acceptable vantage point, just so I do not start throwing up all over the place. • D2's FOV is horrible. I get dizzy, and often I cant tell where the hell I am being attacked from. It really drags my enjoyment down.

  • It would be a very good addition with the 4k upgrades.

  • Nope. Because that isn't what you buy a console for. Want that stuff? Fine. Build a pc then.

    • Ps4 can't handle it hardware wise. They'd have to minimize all graphical effects, shadows, water, grass, lighting, etc. just to handle a wide FOV. PC will always rule in this department due to constant hardware upgrades/tech.

        • Ah, guessing that it wouldn't hit performance! 😂 Seriously? You think the devs just threw away 10% to 20% performance for no reason at all? Damn....

        • The reason I get frustrated with the frankly terrible field of vision in destiny and most console games... Is that 90% of the time when I get caught on some piece of physics, it's because the field of view wouldn't allow me to see things that are right next to me.... It's like trying to navigate an area wearing a pair of toilet paper rolls as goggles wear you suffer from some kind of spinal injury and can't turn your neck and have to turn your entire body.... Realistically it's an advantage to play the game on a smaller display and I think they feel that wider FOV would give an unfair advantage or something but still I get so tired of bumping into things I can't see....

@StarDustSøul I find that there are two reasons companies often opt out of FoV sliders in consoles vs PC, and here's just two examples: 1) Console games are often framerate locked, and something that many people who play games, even on PC do not know or seem to realize, is that increasing your Field of View not only increases what you can see around you, but what the engine has to render as well, so if you often see that maxing our your FoV suddenly causes your Framerate to Dip, it is because you are suddenly rendering a much larger picture, which can be a problem with games that already struggle as it is to maintain a stable framerate in consoles... This is because many 3D games, ESPECIALLY First Person Shooters, use a computer Graphics technique known as "Clipping" which essentially only renders in high detail what is in your field of view at all times in order to save on system resources and allocate them elsewhere, this is especially useful for making magic happen with the limited resources devs have to work with on consoles, so you can easily see how being able to suddenly increase how much you are now rendering at any given point can put a strain in some games on consoles... And 2) Console players often sit far away from their big TVs, on average between 6-10 feet away and because of this, even the lower frames and zoomed Field of Vision is often not noticeable or as bothersome... With PC on the other hand, unless you use a controller or a wireless keyboard and mouse you will essentially be sitting within 2-4 feet away from your monitor. Being so close to a monitor will not only make the lower frames much more noticeable, but the zoomed field of view will often give a severe tunnel vision effect which will often times cause motion sickness or even migraines when having to stare at it for prolonged periods of time (this is why I usually prioritize Framerate over graphics on any PC game and always play on a minimum FoV of 90). If the developers can put a FoV slider without compromising anything then I'd honestly be all for the console players to have one for Destiny 2 on console, more choice is always welcome in my book :3

What is annoying is that I have a sim racing setup that I sit in to play every other console and PC game, but when I play Destiny, I have to get out of that setup, and sit on a chair behind it.

                • Agree. We def need to be able to alter FOV on console. Why this isn’t an option in every FPS I’ll never understand. Those who don’t know what FOV is wont ever touch the slider anyway. If it’s to protect someone from their own stupidity that’s a fruitless effort so yeah... Why the hell cant we have a simple FOV slider again?
