I had an idea for weapons that combined duplicate infusions and overall kills to increase what I called "Weapon Legacy." It is essentially the weapon's level, and as it increases it unlocks new scopes, PvE perks, and unique shaders. Nothing is set in stone here so feel free to make suggestions. I have two slots for random perks (for those who really loved randoms) but I know that Bungie doesn't seem to be leaning in that direction, so take it for what you will. Perhaps when we level up the gun we can earn tokens to re-roll the randoms, encouraging people to stick with the gun.
The weapon level can be increased infinitely and I was thinking that in PvP when it tells you what weapon you were killed with, that player's particular weapon level could be displayed along side its icon. The weapon unlocks complete at level 100, but perhaps every 5 or 10 levels beyond could award some kind of bonus like an engram of various types.
Also, if you were curious about it, I am suggesting that the PvE perks stack with the gun's original perks for super PvE fun times.
Thanks for checking it out!
Edit: A few people asked about the shaders so I'll try to clarify. My idea was that you unlock unique shaders down the road to show off your devotion to the weapon, and you can freely swap between them - overwriting the custom shader if you choose.

Also, sorry for any typos. I slapped it all together pretty quick.
Image updated to fix typo and add "detailed weapon stats" button.
Update: I did something similar with what I'd like to see with subclasses if you're interested. Check it out if that doesn't sound too boring - it may be doomed to burial though. Here is the post: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/235997434?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1

Thumbs up.

You earned an upvote.

You need to be hired by Bungie

This is OP, nerf it! No but seriously, its amazing how people can come up with this stuff and the people working on Destiny seem to have no idea.

Awesome idea. I've played a fair bit of Paladins and the shaders/skin idea is very in line with that. Stick with a champion, level them up and get level set shaders. The idea of infusion duplicates to further level a weapon is good. I do think that you should gain a single legendary shard when infusing (rather than the 3 when dismantling). Hopefully community ideas will have an impact one day....

This is a dank idea!

This is pretty badass

Amazing idea man

such a great idea

Lovely idea. This would give me a reason to stick with multiple guns I dislike, but SEE exponential potential in, if they just had better rolls. Good job.

I wish I could bump this 100 times! The separate PvE perks would be amazing for all the raid and exotic weapons that are never used because they serve no purpose to anyone.

I upvoted it on reddit. I bump in here. I love this idea.

Hells yes.

Not bad. The idea for pve perks seems pretty good. Not sure if stacking would be over kill though. But having weapons be able to be better in pve without pvp changes seems beneficial to what can be done with the game. Also partially fits with the lore tab on MIDA which suggests that weapons are modified for crucible matches.

Yes this is how you give people the good feelings when they reach a REAL milestone in the game. This is how you make players remember the time they ran a perfect match. With there trusty sidearm Beth (or whatever you name it). This is also how you make obscure or old weapons competitive. After leveling any rifle to max your going to know how it works and how to win with it.

3 RepliesGreat concept! However, Bungie has done everything they can to balance PvP and unless they separate PvE and PvP this would bring utter chaos to their precious PvP.
-
I was thinking about the way the power level system works with weapons. You don't really get attached to anything in particular. You're just waiting for the next thing with a higher power level to drop soon as it does other weapon becomes shards. This would give you incentive to hold on to weapons and infuse them rather than just dismantling the one with the lower PL.
-
Oi Cozmo, where are you? This is actually something the development teams needs to see.

2 RepliesVery interesting. Hope the devs notice this post. You have a really great concept for weapon mastery here!

Basically a better version of vanilla D1. Having to level up weapons sucked in D1. Always ended up grinding bounties or sitting at a specific point in a mission where you rack up large numbers of enemy kills quickly. If vanguard weapons ranked up through strike conpletions, crucible weapons through crucible victories, and vendor weapons through public events or something like that, it would be more enjoyable than grinding specific high density mob spawns.
-
I think it's a great idea. It would be cool if each column's node unlocked after specific kill requirements. Example would be 50 headshots to unlock first scope, 150 second scope, 300 to unlock the final scope.
-
Great idea! It would be cool if you could also give custom nicknames to your favorite guns that you’ve put a lot of time in. Like with your idea, once the weapon is level 100 it could unlock a text box for a nickname and once you’ve entered it it can’t be changed again for that gun. Side note: I’ve also wondered since D1 launch why we still don’t have the ability to rotate the view of weapons, ships and sparrows but we can rotate our characters when inspecting armor pieces and our ghosts. I’d like to see all the detail the designers put into all of the loot I get, especially the weapons.
