Do Christian pastors make up sins that aren't really sins

It seems lots of stuff outside the Ten Commandments are sins and it's probably based off false interpretation

  • All sins are defined by your morality. Sadly, most faiths like to twist that like politicians so that "their" view is the only one that can "save" your soul or whatever. Quite frankly? Use your own morals and common sense for your own reasons, not because someone told you to.

They can make up anything as long as people believe em. This is where religion gets a bit messy because people often times do believe em because the culture is taught around disarming critical thinking against an authority figure.

        • It's like this, The 10 Commandments are like the Admendments, basic laws and they don't contain all of the laws.

        • Yes, Pastors make up things all the time. For example, I've seen pastors claim that drinking alcohol is a sin. Although this is never stated in the bible. As for the 10 Commandments, those are not the end-all be-all. There are plenty of sins that aren't included. Like being prideful, for example. Here's my explanation of Old Testament laws.
Don't know if you are, but if you are interested in learning more about it, I'd recommended looking up "Mosaic Law." You might have heard a Christian say before "that doesn't count, it's in the Old Testament." While this is a poor way of phrasing it, this is mostly true. Mosaic Laws are all of the laws written by Moses, not just the 10 Commandments. There are ~600, I believe, and Hasidic Jews follow them all, to this day. Things like: -eating pork -eating shellfish -wearing polyester blends -shaving -working on Sunday (It's actually Saturday) These things do not apply to Christians, because Jesus freed us from Mosaic Law when he died. This is not to say that everything is permissible, but our salvation is no longer bound to legalistic morality. This site offers a great explanation. https://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-law.html
• The pharisees in the Bible were religious leaders that intentionally tried to entrap and kill Jesus. Pastors today are just as human and capable following their own beliefs.

            • One of the best treatises I heard on the subject divided faith-based rules into three categories: 1. Biblical Absolutes. Things like the Ten Commandments, as well as the Sermon on the Mount. Things considered to be a part of the word of God. 2. Community Standards. These are things that a given community, like a church or denomination, might encourage (or even require) people to do, for certain reasons. A church rule forbidding drinking might qualify as this. Another good example was the rule against dancing in "Footloose". Sadly, it is common for a church to fall into error and start preaching these as equivalent to Biblical absolutes. An example of this is the Catholic mandate that priests be celibate: if you read I Corinthians 7, it very clearly states that such restrictions are actually forbidden by the Bible. 3. Personal Convictions. Something that an individual might think OK for others, but choose not to do himself. A Christian opposed to killing things might choose to be a vegetarian, for example. Or one who believed in a simple and non-extravagant lifestyle might drive a fuel-efficient car, or even take the bus.

              • Example: many christians treat suicide as some unforgivable sin, like if you kill yourself you wont be able to receive forgiveness after you are gone. But the bible does does not say anything anywhere about suicide being a sin. Its not a good idea, obviously. But its not like a loved one is going to hell if they sank into a bad place and made that bad choice.

                • Answer - Yes some have and do. Question - Are you ever going to ask questions that aren't aimed at your hate for your old pastor? I mean seriously. You seem to have some really deep seated issues there.

                  • It's more likely that they would try to say things which are clearly defined as sins are not sinful. A few examples of this today are lying, certain cases of divorce, and homosexuality.

                  • Yes. Swearing and drinking being sins are common ones where I am. And yet, the Bible does not say they are sins.

                    • So things like jerking off and staring at a beautiful women is a sin. Or they say even thinking about the sin itself is a sin.

                            • Generally pastors will say it's a sin to not give them money every week.

                            • Sin is contextual and subjective. If an act weighs on you and you feel you should repent then you're on your way to do just that. If you need a member of clergy or an ancient book to tell you what's right and wrong, I'm not sure religion could help you anyway.
