Healthy Debate on Destiny 2

I've been seeing a lot of salt and understandable frustration on the forums about things Destiny 2 is getting wrong. (P2P connections, 2 primaries, MUTE PROTAGONISTS) However, I've also seen some excitement (New areas to explore, 50 cutscenes in the main storyline, and fresh PvE content) So I figured this could be a good thread for people to state their opinion in a mature way, and maybe suggest some improvements, so Bungie can actually get some good feedback instead of just hearing "THIS GAME SUCKS, CANCELLED MY PRE-ORDER." See you starside.

  • Can't comment on D2 since it won't be released for a couple of weeks. Did play Beta, needs some tweaks

  • Like the new weapon system. New types of weapons, and the same type of weapon can be in mor than one slot.

  • Despite all of my criticisms and salt, I'm really excited for the game.

  • My hype comes and goes. One day I don't think about it at all. The next I start getting hyped about what patrol is gonna be like and how all these side missions and "quests" will turn out. I personally think there's a lot to look forward too. My biggest and mostly only complaint is how they are handling lore as I feel like some of the comments by Luke smith kind of feel like a slap in the face. But Luke smith generally speaks that way so. I think I'm benefited by being a part of an awesome small clan and we hype each other up and really enjoy playing together so regardless I know I will enjoy it because of them.

  • Best three bits: bungie is supporting clans in game, there will be a map and the fact that It is much more open world.

  • I'm not taking too much from the beta. I'll wait to see what people are saying after the release. I'm sure it will be better than the beta.

  • I'm waiting till the game comes out, and I have the time to sit down and enjoy it, and then and only after I've played through the story and campaign and all of the other content a few times, will I feel like I can make an accurate assessment of how the game turned out. I know this is a radically different mindset, but I prefer it.

I feel like people put a finger in each ear and go "bla bla bla bla, PvE has been runiened pvp, D2 is going to suck" when bungie says 50 cut scenes , a better story, more public events and in general more to do in protrol. People are so pissed that they cant use a sniper as a secondary they ignore all other details saying PvE will be better in D2. Dose 30 fps ruin the gaming experience? Is dedicated servers needed when there was noticeably less lag in the beta? Call me a fan boy all you want, but i said it once and im going to say it again .... D2 for game of the year!!!

      • People are going to like it, or not. Both opinions are valid from the point of view it comes from. Both are equally important. The real question will be player retention, and how that will cause changes in the game. As long as it's fairly profitable, bungie will not change the direction of Destiny, at least imo.

This will be short, some general concerns I know are getting fixed will not be stated, Ex. Super regeneration, PVE power ammo drops, Etc ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVE - Seems like Bungie has gotten themselves together on the story telling and game immersion, playing the first mission really hit me hard seeing our home for about the last 3 years just get destroyed, 1000+ hours, etc. It just felt really powerful and I think the main campaign will be pretty good. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVE/Endgame/Strikes I love Bungie, but for such an impressive first mission, the new strike sorta, kinda, sucked?, actually let me break this down. Some bits were cool, I'll break this s down to keep it simple. Beginning, Middle, Near End, and Boss Fight. Beginning, it was alright, i wasn't a big fan of the first thing me doing was scanning something, i felt annoyed, put simply. Middle, it sucked, it just felt like a bunch of boring waves of enemy's. Near end, was pretty cool, going into that mine and dodging the drills was the highlight. Boss Fight was again alright, cool transition with different changes of pace, but he was a bullet sponge. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVP/Quickplay I really, really, and did I say really?? I really enjoyed it, I like the power ammo economy, I liked the quick action, I also really enjoyed that specific map. That's it really, just a really good gamemode. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVP/Competitive Honestly I didn't really play this GM, just because of how much I enjoyed quickplay, I did play it for like at least 2 hours total, but I feel that isn't enough to support a solid opinion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Classes I'm gonna keep this short without much explanation. Keep in mind this is my personal opinion. Also keep in mind I'm a warlock main. 1. Striker - Felt really powerful and lasted a while. 2. Dawnblade - Extremely powerful with dodge but didn't last long 3. Sentinel - Only one shield throw was disappointing, IMO this is overrated 4. Nova Bomb - Not as powerful as I hoped, especially with its slowness 5. Arc Strider - Powerful, it can't close the gap though unless your very skilled 6. Golden Gun - Very Powerful with an overwhelming amount of shots, lasts like a second though, it makes the dawnblade look like a long lasting super. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Conclusion Again gonna keep this short The beta was pretty good, and I'm excited for D2

            • I think the PvP is 100% better than D1. The inverted spire felt more or less the same as any strike tbh, but Nessus looks gorgeous af. Also seeing the new features in PvE on IGN, chilling in patrols will be so sick, and now we have quick access so we don't need to stay in orbit. I like D2

            • Meh, I had fun with D2, and my friends do. Honestly Bungies biggest weakness is they are too fearful about trying new things. They fear that new things won't go well so they take half steps forward instead of full leaps.

            • I thoroughly enjoyed the beta. I thought that the Pvp was much, much better in look and feel and I felt that the new weapons system was mch better. I can say though that Pvp and Pve separation needs to happen, and it did kind of feel like an expansion.

I see Destiny 2 as an overhaul that's needed, a massive change to the current structure we see. There are some who are clouded by nostalgia, but remember that nostalgia was Bungie diving into a new territory for Destiny, a territory Bungie had time to analyze for about 3 years now. ~TheGreatNike

I feel alot of the negativity/toxicity on the forums has steemed from D2's large changes, Bungie's incapability to do a good RPG & dishonesty. Change scares people, but change is needed in many games. However, as many have stated Bungie is at fault for 75% of the negativity. A lot goes way back into Year 1. Before we go into that we have to go into what is/was Destiny 1? Destiny 1 was a serious take on the Borderlands formula. Put bluntly, a Borderlanda clone/knock off. One key difference is that Borderlands was a co-operative RPG FPS with PVP being a "F#$@ around" activity. Destiny was a RPG FPS with MMO elements. Which is 1 of the 2 biggest flaws in Destiny. As Blizzard informed Bungie, there is no "MMO-lite". "You're all in" or "You're all out." Even Warframe came to terms with this. Warframe is a sore topic around here but it IS similar to Destiny & it took many steps like Destiny 1 did...to correct itself. The developer was in constant communication with the players, & while it took time, the game evolved & its shortcomings became addressed. Now it is a very accessible game (overwhelming at first) but accessible & with the upcoming "Plains of Eidolon" expac/update the developer is finally acting on of the biggest requests & transitioning the game to be more open world as requested. Warframe bit the bitter pill & did the following: - Added in MM for all activities - Seperated PVE & PVP (Stat wise mainly. Everything controls the same, but dmg, effects, & etc are different in activities.) - Added Social Spaces - Created a flow to the once disjointed & chaotic to follow storyline. - Found a good balance between Grinding & Paying. (You cannot buy certain things unless you have played enough to be high enough rank to use them. These rank ups require skill in the game, you are literally tested HEAVILY. You pay to save time, Pay to Win is not a factor. This even surprised me.) - Simplified all aspects of the game, from mods, to forma, to polarities. - Kept enough complexity & depth to reward the frequent player. - Fixed Glitches, & adjusted AI to be more challenging/adaptable. (They never altered things to FORCE players to play a specific way. Unless it was a glitch being exploited.) I'm not here to praise it though. I am mentioning it for a reason. Mainly, that it mirrors D1 in many ways. In Year 1 Bungie released an incomplete game, had its nose in the air, didn't communicate with the playerbase in a positive manner, & felt it could dictate to players just how to play the game. We all know how that ended. Since then that relationship has been an up & down rollercoaster ride ever since. It took a massive playerbase drop for Bungie to bite the bitter pill & make TTK which was really the best expansion/change to D1 into what it was. Like Warframe, it addressed MANY issues. It was a very good middle ground between Casual & Hardcore players. Loot was frequent but didn't rain down Borderlands style, the game maintained challenge but was accessible, there were tools & pathways to level up & acquire hear (Yes this includes 3oC). The remaining issues really rested with RNG & players gating content. Many blame TTK & RoI for "ruining Destiny but in truth it made the game very playable, accessible, & made it so the remaining 25% of blame that is on the players is no more. Before RoI the only thing blocking progression were players. In year 1 you needed Gjally &/or ___ Grimiore score. In TTK Spindle seemed to be the top dog along with all sorts of other crazy restrictions. Many still exist to this day. RoI eased this by creating many pathways to max lvl(Light). To some hardcore this made the game easy & ruined everything. Before hand folks complained over finding folks for activities. Aftewards folks complained about people in activities. (Better to complain about the activity/people on it instead of mot being able to even do the activity no?) RoI actually opened up endgame to more players. The higher lvl allowed lesser skilled/newer players a cushion for error in endgame. Which eased some of the burden on experienced players. In the end D1 had finally opened up & became what many wanted/desired from it. But there was plenty of feedback/issues unaddressed. The biggest being: - Matchmaking - Story - Balance Now comes D2. It turns D1 on its head by adopting brand gameplay by going to 2 primaries, 4v4 pvp, etc. - It removes all Subclasses trees & instead limits them to 2 paths. - It is balanced/build from the ground up purely around PVP. - It has an actual Story but no interaction in the story. - Matchmaking still isn't addressed. - RNG has been removed. - Character Customization is unchanged. - D2 has the theme of teamwork & survival, where D1 was more a theme of adventure & mystery. - PVE & PVP are not separated Severe changes often scare people. It doesn't help that many of the changes counteract/go against feedback given by the players. The admission (by Deej) that Bungie does NOT listen to anyone but Top Dollar Streamers & sometimes Reddit. So toxicity is a given, if not guaranteed. Add in that small Quality of Life changes (Beards, Expanded Character Creation, Character Edits.) have gone completely ignored & it creates a hostile situation. Lastly, mixing RPG & FPS players is a bad idea. These genres are like Oil & Water, they do not mix easily. You have half of the playerbase who just want to mindlessly shoot things & each other; who would be happy never seeing their character, they could be a turd with a gun sticking out & they wouldn't bat an eye. Then you have the other half who want deep story, character development, power growth, & who try to get attached to their Characters & want deep personalization. Like PVE & PVP these are polar opposites & they do not mesh well. To be fair, a lot of this rests on Bungie & its continuously fluctuating idea of what Destiny should be. Is it a PVP shooter? A Co-Op shooter? A RPG/FPS? An MMORPGFPS? A Loot Shooter? A Sci-Fi FPS? A decision needs to be made & then it needs to be adhered to. Lets look at Warframe & Overwatch. They very BLUNTLY state what they are. Warframe is a Co-Op Third Person Shooter MMORPG However the MMO has been lacking & with every update it becomes more & more MMO. Overwatch is a Team PVP Shooter. Yes it has deep lore but Blizzard has 0 intention of adding true PVE gameplay, & wants the lore to be told via outside media. For some that is disappointing BUT the devs have a clear view of what they want & players respect that. Bungie however is trying to get everyone to play but ends up tripping on its own lies. Destiny is a PVE game, no its a PVP game, its an FPS, no an RPG. "When you try to please everyone, you please no one." Honestly, I am disappointed Destiny is becoming a PVP shooter. But Bungie with D2 seems to be beginning to stand its ground & stand by this. I respect that. Many know I am not getting D2 because of the focus on PVP. It simply is not my cup of tea. But I respect Bungie for finally growing a pair & sticking with its intentions. The issue currently in my opinion is that Bungie hasn't fully commited to this. It's still trying to swindle PVE gamers into playing Destiny. Even IGN (everyone but Destin Legaire) has remarked on how D2 is PVP aligned. But they are saving final verdict for launch, although Fran has basically come to terms (and is alright) with it. When franchises/IPs go in a different direction it causes friction. Destiny 1 was marketed as a PVE RPGFPSMMO where you & your friends adventure together. Destiny 2 is your standard Multiplayer FPS but with a Sci-Fi Theme. To be fair. If Destiny 2 had decided to be a pure PVE experience, thr backlash wpuld be equally has harsh. Because all the PVP players would feel alienated. Bungie cannot win with D2 no matter what. Yes it could go the way of Warframe & split the 2 activities but Bungie won't. The Bungie devs are not skilled enough nor dedicated enough to do so. But moving forward, the IP will have less turbulent waters now. D3 will be what folks expect, a PVP shooters with some PVE side activities (like SW Battlefront 1). Done & done. As for the issues of FPS & servers.. Very few FPS' has 100% Dedicated servers, they use Hybrids. If your interested in the how & why see: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/6g3laj/how_networking_works_in_destiny_1_and_how_it_will/ Not the end all be all. Not 100% accurate for all scenario but it is insightful. Bottomline: Despite all the arguments on the forums, no one truly knows how to fix D2. It cannot be fixed. It in truth isn't broken. The game either is your cup of tea or it isn't. It is hard to let go. But sometimes you have to.

                        • They are venturing too far away from what made destiny destiny to me. I liked my loadout, supers, and game modes in d1. I would have settled for a new loot table and a ton more story. I do not like the concept of single roll weapons. I do not like the concept of only 4v4 game modes I do not like the concept of double primary which forces me to avoid using a proper heavy and a shotgun in pve. I suppose I can understand it somewhat in pvp, but even then, I didn't mind special in pvp. I loved defender class more than anything. It's gone now. I'll get the game. I'll play it. I just don't anticipate playing it anywhere near as long as d1 and I seriously doubt it will be as fun. I played the beta for about 4 hours in total to try stuff out with all friends and it was just so dull. I can only hope they do something to make it much more fun at release otherwise it will be a super short lived game for me. If the game is going the direction the community wants, then I'm happy for them.

                        • As a guardian who has 2800 hours in Destiny 1 , i can tell you the following : I endured Destiny 1 life cycle with all the nerfs that occurred because of PVP whiners. As a PVE player i always expected Bungie to show the finger to PvP whiners with destiny 2 because , on all Destiny 1 life cycle majority of the player base was always PvE players. Instead Bungie globally nerfed everything in the game before it is even released in the sake of PvP balance. This is the final stroke for me. I am not going to spend that much time on a game which has no clear direction at all. Destiny 1 had a hefty price tag with all the released DLC which made Destiny cost around 200$ . That is way too expensive for a game that has no clear indication for future and constantly alienating their player base. Thats why i am not going to buy Destiny 2.

                        • I'm clueless when it comes to game development and how things fit together...or whatever. But, why IS it so difficult for the game to differentiate between PvE and PvP? I love both, but I usually have guns I like for PvE and others I like for PvP. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. And even for people who love the gun regardless of the activity and just use it for everything, only to one day login and realize it's now junk? My question is, can't the game realize via the "code algorithm" (I told you, clueless), that this player is in the PvE environment, keep weapons performing like "E". Then for another player, it uses its "code algorithm" to realize this player is in PvP environment, and it adjusts weapons to "P". I know Bungie is now supposedly going to have more fine tuning and it won't be a blanket adjustment to ALL pulse rifles, etc., but too much emphasis is placed on "balance". Don't mess with the entire player base because a certain portion of that base is unhappy. I'm not the "get good" type of guy, but I've never played a game where if you were struggling, the devs would say, "OK, time out! These guys aren't getting complete satisfaction because they're dying too much". Basically if you're struggling, that's a good thing. You work harder to get better and when you do, you've got a great sense of accomplishment. That encourages the player to move on to new unknown adventures with their newly honed skills. "Balance"? Yes, there are some kinderguardians, but don't punish all of us because they throw tantrums. We balance the game ourselves. *End Rant*
