Healthy Debate on Destiny 2

I've been seeing a lot of salt and understandable frustration on the forums about things Destiny 2 is getting wrong. (P2P connections, 2 primaries, MUTE PROTAGONISTS) However, I've also seen some excitement (New areas to explore, 50 cutscenes in the main storyline, and fresh PvE content) So I figured this could be a good thread for people to state their opinion in a mature way, and maybe suggest some improvements, so Bungie can actually get some good feedback instead of just hearing "THIS GAME SUCKS, CANCELLED MY PRE-ORDER." See you starside.

It's all aimed toward children, Destiny is a game made for children. It started off a 'little' bit hard core with Material farming etc but it soon developed into an Arcade game, streamlined so that 8 years olds didn't have any complex skill trees to get their heads around or 'hard' content to beat. And then we get D2, even further dumbed down for younger audiences. 5 minute story missions, colourful, pahahaha characters (Cayde-6), Guided games, no RNG perks rolls, patrols with maps that literally tell you where everything is, Ohhhhh pretty spwace ship loading screens again, I'm sure another bunch of stupid 'pop cluture' dance Emotes and below standard challenging content etc etc etc I can't wait to see all the Youtubers upload videos of their 'worlds first' blah blah and daily 'INSANE LOOT OPENING' videos. Not to mention the abdundance of videos containing kids creaming their Paw patrol pants about getting an Exotic weapon to drop. And then after 5 months the Twitch 'carry' streamers will be out in full force, influencing the way Bungie baby sits the games development over the next 3 years, the forums will turn to salt and tears and Destiny 3 will be even further watered down, with even less options for mature gamers. they'll probably get a Kellogs variety pack promotion going pre D3 release. 'Buy Kellogs variety packs and get a free Tony the Tiger in game shader'. Destiny has become a bit of a joke, you either know it and admit it and still play because shooting Aliens is fun regardless of your hand being held or not or you don't know it because, well you just don't have the intellectual capacity to see it.

    • I'm really excited for the game, the one thing that's has me the most excited is the new story, and the interactions with the NPCs, I just wish it was September already! Though my only concern since they announced 4v4 crucible are the raids. Are raids going to be 4 guardians vs the darkness?

    • I'm concerned that the character customisation is exactly the same and has just been giving a touch up. I believe this due to all guardians seen in trailers so far having D1 hairstyles. I also feel not letting us customise our characters during the BETA was due to it leading to a shit storm on the forums since it hasn't changed. I would love to be proved wrong but for some topics Bungie like to operate a 'That will do policy' and this could be one of them. A mute character can work but if the opening cutscene with our guardian is a sign to how they will be then I'm going to be skipping a lot of these 50 cutscenes.

A sequel needs MORE customizable features not less. Look at every game with a 2 after it compared to the original. This should expand the game experience, not feel as if my character has taken a step backwards Ill forever miss my D1 load out of choice Primary Sniper or Fusion Rifle Sword

      • I'm not looking forward to paying another $250 within the next 2 years for cut-content DLCs. Overall D2 seemed childish, (art design, story, script/dialogue, gunplay) like Overwatch. Weapon balance was awful (everybody using Scathe and that pulse rifle.) Mid-match quitters EVERYWHERE! In a Beta, that's a terrible sign. Unoriginal and uninspired. If you're hyped, fine, good for you. But a lot of us D1 hardcores aren't; and that should be a little concerning.

So I have to ask, due to misinformation, WHAT p2p connections are you talking about? The physics servers were moved into the bungie cloud server. Just because they aren't calling them "dedicated servers", people think they didn't change this. I'll try to explain a bit better for anyone to lazy to go read that post. In D1, all consoles made the same calculations. If me and someone else were playing together, and I was "host", if your console said your hit box was I position A, and my console said "nuh uh, your hitbox is in position B" my console would take priority, and your hit box would be position B. In D2, our console are making the same calculations, but the bungie server has priority over BOTH the consoles.

          • Bungie is getting the big things right....but got one little (but important) thing wrong. The game is clearly going to improve upon the weaknesses of Destiny 1. But Bungie didn't get the tuning of the game right for PVE. Our Guardians were badly undperpowered for characters that were level 20, Light 200 and running around with a full loadout of Legendary gear...and people were understandably upset about it. To their credit, Bungie made no effort to defend the tuning. They said changes were already in the works, and have announced that a new tuning of the game will drop with the PC beta later this month.

          • I honestly love the loadout changes. Two primaries means energy weapons get more ammo, (looking at you coldheart), and it also fixes issues with special weapon abuse. As far as it's use in PVE, I personally never found myself using special weapons much, when a few well placed hand cannon shots could get the job done faster and easier. I basically just had a sniper for when I ran out of heavy for use on the boss. That's just a few of my opinions, feel free to refute now.

            • One of the first things I noticed when the console beta reviews started coming in was a general dissatisfaction with the amount of content available to play. One mission, one strike, and a couple modes of PvP. No open-world exploration (patrols). Due to that, there was a perception that the console beta was severely limited and did a poor job showcasing the game. Of course, showcasing the game was not Bungie's stated intent with the beta, but their intent is hardly relevant: what players perceive and (mis)understand is what is important, and players perceived that this beta was going to allow them access to more than it actually did. Is that fair to Bungie? No. Was it a misunderstanding on the players' part? Yes. Does it matter? Not a bit. There is a reason so much money is spent on marketing: people buy games based on what they perceive about it, and this beta has left a bad perception of the game in the minds of many. After all the negative reviews started coming out Bungie, via their exclusive talks with IGN, addressed concerns about open-world content and revealed more about what would be available in the open world, with Flashpoints, the Lost Sectors, etc. This is stuff that should have been in the Beta: at the very least they could have given patrols on 2 different planets, allowing for some exploration along with showing what open-world content they had. Instead, by not including it and only talking about it after the fact it gives the appearance of damage-control and placating a disgruntled base rather than revealing more exciting stuff about the game. Then there are the flippant reactions to concerns and dissatisfaction regarding weapons, abilities, etc. Bungie wants D2 to be an E-sport, that much is clear. They listen to streamers and other free advertisers when making changes to the game rather than the players that make up the core of their base. They zealously stick to their unified sandbox design, slanting it heavily to favor PvP (because again, E-sport) with seemingly little regard for how it affects PvE. The message PvE players take away from this is simply "Get used to it: we don't care what you think." All of the above is a setup for my biggest criticism of Bungie: Bungie's marketing/communications team is terrible. Just awful. After all the negative reactions toward the beta , they continuously push for pre-orders without addressing any of the feedback outside of one blog post that was basically “Yeah, we kind of knew that already.” Then they come out with the Coldheart ad. Like that doesn't scream "oh, you’re mad? Here’s a free exotic. Now shut up." It's insulting. Bungie has a reputation for "you will play how we want you to" instead of "play your way", and marketing/community relations has done nothing to try to fix that. If that is their philosophy they’d get a lot more respect if they’d just come out and tell us that it’s their way or nothing. If ‘our way or nothing’ is not their philosophy, and their marketing department were good at their job, they'd do better about addressing player concerns. Something like this: "Greetings Guardians. We’ve received a lot of feedback from our recent beta, and a lot of you are saying you think there's a PvP bias in this game and it's hurting your PvE experience. We've heard your suggestions to fix it. We don't have time to change much before the game launches next month, but these concerns are going to be our #1 priority from now until the first expansion launches in December. We humbly ask you to bear with us and we'll try to have an improved PvE experience for you then." That would go a long way, I think , toward easing the community’s irritation. Things to fix: * The unified sandbox needs to go. PvE and PvP are fundamentally different and require different approaches regarding balance. Split them and their associated gear. Plenty of other contemporary games do this so it can't be that hard. It just requires Bungie to admit they were wrong, say a nice public mea-culpa, and fix it. * PvE loadout needs to return to primary/special/heavy. They can keep 2-primary in PvP if they want, since that's why they made the change, but it only hurts PvE. * Call me a noob if you like, but have some kind of 'training mode' or location where supers are constantly charged so we can practice with them. Or make it a custom setting for private-only PvP matches. I've been watching beta footage and I have seen all the classes do things with their supers that I was not aware they could do, because there's no guide and no way to practice them with the absurdly slow charge rate. * Return PvE ability charge levels to their D1 speeds. This will be a simple fix once you split the sandbox. * Bring back all the D1 supers and elements. It makes no sense for titans to have forgotten how to hammer, warlocks forgotten how to get their Sith on, and hunters forget how to robin hood. Bring them all back. Keep the changes to Arc and Void titan: they're fine. Fix Voidwalker, make sunsinger choose between grenade-lord and dawnblade trees, and give back the lightning. Last, fix Golden Gun's damage, make Arc choose between blade or staff trees, and give me back my bow. * Rework the Hunter's dodge mechanic into something more team-oriented. Right now Hunters excel at being solo fighters and flankers, and that's nice, but they don't actually add anything to a team dynamic. * Hire voice actors for the PC. Same VAs for all 3 races if necessary: 1 male, 1 female. The PC isn't mute: give them dialogue. * Get marketing/community relations to address the anger and frustration with the direction the game was taken. * Last, most importantly of all: Communicate more. Communicate constantly. Communicate personally. Bungie has got to be one of the least communicative developers I've ever followed. Whoever's job it is to talk to the community needs to be on these forums, facebook, twitter, etc. all day long. One blog post a week doesn't do much for us. A driveby response of "I'll take this up with the dev team" does nothing. Talk to us. Tell us what you're going to do. Tell us why what we want from you won’t/can’t happen. Things to praise: * The art department earned their money, that's for sure. The wrecked tower was identifiable while not being 'boringly familiar'. Nessus was gorgeous, though all the red and white was a bit "No Man's Sky". * That some of the guns get red with heat as they fire is a great little detail. * Access to the director while on-planet. Thank you for removing the unnecessary middleman of having to go to orbit before going to another world. * The new class abilities and supers. These are all (to me) welcome additions to the lineup of guardian abilities. Shame you took away old ones though (see above.) * I’m in the minority here, but I like that guns have fixed stats now. I hate having to weigh 2 of the same gun against each other for which one might be slightly better. Guns should have fixed stats with mod-slots to customize them to the player, which is what you did. * Ships have shaders. Neat. :) * I’ll tentatively praise the Lost Sectors as they sound like repeatable PvE dungeons. More PvE content that isn’t strikes or raids is always welcome. * You finally brought the game to PC. 3 years late, but better late than never. :) * Though PC launches almost 2 months later than consoles (boo!) at least you say you're going to give us DLC at the same time. (yay!) That should be enough for now.

The beta was decent enough. I didn't expect it to be the best game I've ever play3d, I expected it to be a sequel to a videogame that I like, and more polished than d1. Which overall I felt it was. Increase our damage output a bit (just enough to make us feel a bit stronger, but not enough to turn everything into easy mode) and I think the new weapon system will be fine. I went into the beta knowing that I'd be playing one mission, a strike and a couple of crucible modes so I wasn't disappointed. What I played looked better, and definitely seemed more polished. Gunplay was good, the strike was challenging but still fun, and the story mission had a few "oh that's pretty cool" moments for me. I'm excited for PvE. There have been some great additions that I look forward to playing. -New public events, harder versions of those same public events with more enemies and better loot. I like the option to opt into a harder version of public events. Pretty cool and fun with friends and strangers alike. I could see myself making new friends this way for sure. -the mini Adventures will add meat to the story. They seem to be little side missions that will help us understand what's going on while giving loot. - Lost sectors will be fun to find, especially with friends. They will motivate us too explore these world's that Bungie has created. I like the fact that there is a little symbol marking the location of a lost sector. This will motivate us to keep our eyes peeled as we run around world's, not just mindlessly running/driving past everything. -World quests will provide backstory for the main campaign. They could potentially substitute grimoire pretty well I think. They will add some meat to the main campaign story, and imo be a lot more fun and interesting than reading cards on the internet. We get to play more of the story, not just read it. This is a welcome change. -Flashpoints give us something more to do every week. The addition of secret bosses in those flashpoints that give extra loot and are randomly triggered will also add some fun and motivation to do them. -The weekly Featured destinations were a good idea. This will motivate us tip keep going back to these locations. Destiny PvP has never been a big focus for me. I barely like it and dont teally care if it stays or goes. I play other, better games for my pvp needs. Destiny PvE on the other hand was a big deal for me in determining if I would buy D2. A more interesting story, new gear, and plenty of things to do were the main things that I asked to have in D2. Longevity of PvE activities is a big deal for me, and so far it seems that ill be getting a lot of variety and a good amount of things to do. These huge world's that Bungie built won't seem so empty in D2. That's all I want. I'm not expecting Destiny 2 to be the best game of all time, but so far it looks like I'll get at least a few hundred hours out of it after beating the main campaign, which honestly is good enough for me for a game that I'm spending maybe $70 on. I like what I'm seeing so far. The fact that this is all coming in just the base game has me excited because I know more and more things will be added with each DLC. All in all, good job Bungie. You heard us loud and clear when it came to patrol, and adding more story and PvE content. You have my dollar come September.

                • Destiny was intended as a pve game and will always be a pve game so I don't understand why they cater so much to pvp players and trying to make this game more pvp focused. It just doesn't work. We have witnessed several times how pvp "balance" hurts the pve experience over and over. Can we tone it down a bit with the pvp and focus more on pve, which this game does a lot better than the pvp experience.

                    • Expecting healthy debate on this forum is like expecting a whale to fly, it just isn't going to happen. Unless you are in agreement with the hive mind at the time people just fling insults at you and then act like they won the argument. For example, back when Age of Triumph first released anyone that made fun of the fact that it was just rehashing old content or made fun of Bungie in any way about it would be downvoted, called a hater, idiot, etc. and probably mass muted. Meanwhile, praise for it was upvoted and treated like the most intellectual thing of the decade. Now however, if you so much as defend anything you like with D1/D2, you're just a fanboy, sheep, etc. that is just sucking Bungie's dick. Meanwhile, anything that condemns the game is upvoted and people will act like anything negative said is a fact with or without proof because "It sounds like something Bungie would do". I've grown personally tired of this community because no matter what it seems you are damned either way.

                          • I'd but...... Off topic but... Destiny 1 maps confirmed?? Or redskins I want a much dreary more scary ominous tone even melancholy vive to D2 like for real.. Honestly like it's a game where people dye every second. We need some touch heartwarming tone to the game not all bs action that has not even a base for it being enjoyable if you don't put its counterpart of solemn sadness in a world so torn by destruction and a beautiful past that may never be again. I want missions where I feel emotionally connected to the game with orchestra filling my bones full of nostalgia but not for desiring old maps but what the world in it was. Then filled with the wrath a real guardian would have to want to actually push themselves to be motivated to save the world from destruction.... Allllll lol Ll the trailers have been pushing adventures and fun how about humanity... People aren't always in action or happy we all feel sad now and then. These trailers pushing the games action and fun forget how if it's all fun then non is fun you must balance it with the actual reality that.. Destiny's world is painful its sad and it can be human... And we can actually connect but the developers ha e shoved fun so far up their asses they forget how sadness feels maybe it's their millions or their greed that lends them to not see that living life is sad and so is in destiny. I'm not saying make it all boring sad I'm saying balance is what will make the game come alive and not just have a forgetful history such as of vanilla. Make destiny great. Not again just Idk kill cade off -blam!- it kill of the speaker.. Just make it right and make it have a reasons let those who invested over 2000 plus and I know it's plus hours actually come to a point where they drop the control and feel actual sadness.. Sadly bungie aren't great story tellers or will they be Idk d2 isn't out I just hope they aren't just plain old everyday sensationalists because that's not art that's just shit on a stick. Fun until you realize it's actually shit. Give destiny life...

It does look like Hunters will not get a class ability that immediately helps the group, but if you look at the trees, they have passives that have been completely overlooked by the community and I expect that there will be a post about Hunters being a sleeper support class in about a week or two after launch.

I understand people want to protect destiny 2 but there a lot that doesn't look right about the game. When people express actual concerns about the game and their opinions they're not always trying to hate. I pre ordered destiny 2 and I still am having second thoughts. Ths amount of things missing isn't really being made up for at all by the new things. Being only 30 fps on console, no rumble, no private/custom games, skilled based matchmaking, and no dedicated servers. The game feels like it's going backwards to many and just because you disagree doesn't mean you gotta attack anyone who disagrees.
