Storntrooper armour is literally just cumbersome white plastic.
>can't take blaster shots
>can't take being hit with a stick
>can't take being hit with rocks
>can't take being punched
For all the technical advancements the Empire has, stormtroopers are a pile of shit.

In lore, its a polymer-alloy composite that is like eod armor in that it disperses impact and energy pulses across the plates. This means that your typical blaster shot wont kill a trooper but it will knock them out due to the energy dispersing on the plate and then burning the user in affected area -unconscious but not dead. Thats why a bunch or rocks and shit knocked them out easy: the armor goes against them with slow kinetics as it gives greater impact. Either way, they should be used as cannon fodder for how shit they aim.

1 Replyin the film universe, that is more of a plot mechanic/deus ex machina than lore based. if storm troopers were accurate and had effective armor, how would the heroes triumph over evil? in the pre-disney extended universe, their armor is a pretty effective thermoplastic-alloy blend rated for the kind of weapons they carry, as well as a life support suit for hostile conditions with certain upgrades..

iirc according to some hand-wavy EU bullshit, the armor was designed to disperse kinetic energy and blaster shots across the entire body, causing troopers to be incapacitated but not killed. What always bothered me was that TIE pilots are officers that complete many years of the academy and pilot training, and then are used as cannon fodder.

10 RepliesCurrent military helmets can't stop bullets. They're for shrapnel and shock protection. I believe storm trooper armor is primarily just used for environmental protection and uniform purposes. Why would you slap expensive armor on disposable grunts?

I guess it's just for peace of mind. The Empire can't very well admit to its recruits that armor is practically useless. Nobody would ever sign up.

I'd say that all the funding went to more important projects like the Death Star and Super Star Destroyers. It's obvious that Palpatine didn't really care about overall soldier quality since it was he himself that discontinued cloning soldiers and instead just went for recruiting them. It feels like he went the route of having too many soldiers to kill instead of having soldiers too hard to kill. There were still Black Ops teams with better equipment and training, but those are obviously more rare and better trained than a standard rank and file Stormtrooper.

1) Kinetic impact is VERY different than a blaster round, so the rocks/sticks makes a lot of sense. Generally, the assumption is that by the time something is that close, it's either dead or subdued. 2) The armor is more built for intimidation purposes than anything. It's designed so that when you see a full company of troopers marching, you decide "Nah, let's not mess with them today"
