Guns: How in the %#$@ Do They Work?!

So I'm a bit of a gun nut IRL. US Army, spent a whole lot of time tinkering and toying with many a firearm and learning how they work on a mechanical level. This game annoys me with most of its weapon designs. And it pisses me off because Bungie is usually really good about designing their weapons so that they logically work in some reality. Take almost any UNSC weapon from the Halo Games pre-343 for an example; they operate on real world logic and mechanics. Like the UNSC MA5B Assault Rifle was basically an oversized FN F2000 that swallowed an AK-47 and had some fancy tech and a huge magazine strapped to it. Just looking at the thing, a skilled gunsmith could absolutely build a real-life, completely functional version of the weapon if they wanted to. Destiny's weaponry for the most part looks like it was designed by a middle schooler that has no idea how guns work other than they have magazines loaded with bullets and go "bangity-bangity". For example; hand cannons. According to a booklet that came with the collectors edition, they fire a 40mm to 40.8mm polymer round. I spent more time on Google than I'd like to admit trying to figure out what in the hell that is. All you see a bolt of kinetic energy that exits the barrel (which on some models isn't even lined up with the cylinder -- like wtf, guys?) And one big cartridge with a single primer exit the cylinder upon reloading. One primer, but the things fires up to 13 rounds. I'd be willing to accept "space magic" as an explanation if it was in the actual game, but it's not. Oh, and most of the time the cylinder rotates for no reason, because there's only one primer for the firing pin to hit. Oh, and how in the hell does Thorn fire a railroad spike from a cartridge the size of a D battery? No, seriously. Go shoot that thing at a wall and see what sticks out of it. It's weird. Then you have Scout Rifles, which look like they were designed so that the magazine looks like a battery that belongs to your dad's old power drill that's slapped into the bottom of the hand grip, miles away from where the firing mechanisms would be. How the hell do the bullets get from there to the bolt carrier if there's no possible way for them to get there based on some of these designs? And let me rant real quick about Omalon guns; what do they fire? Ferrofluid? Space juice? Halo fans' tears? I really wanna know! I would seriously wish Bungie addressed some of this in the lore in a much more detailed manner.

  • Its a game dude of course some shit wont make sense, I mean think about it we are some tough as mother -blam!-ers who fight aliens who are the "darkness" and we use our "light" to kill them, like that fact alone doesnt make any -blam!-ing sense but nobody complains about that

  • Yeah Bungie! And people come back from the dead...! Magically generate grenades...?! Blink...?!? What is that all about?!?! And supers?!?!? My brain hurts trying to fit all this made up space magic awesomeness into my known world of physics. I mean, come on, Halo (a different game completely) wasn't this way. I just don't get it.

    • I'm the same as you in that I can dismantle, clean, and reassemble most guns... But I don't need video games to have guns that make sense. "Space magic" is good enough for me.

      • I could explain to you the inner workings of Destiny firearms. I could explain to you how Thorn is able to shoot toxic railroad spikes that should be banned in the Crucible since it actually killed a Guardian but somehow isn't banned. I could explain to you how easy it is for Guardians to reverse engineer alien weaponry to be compatible with Guardians. I could explain to you why fusion rifles had been the unfortunate receiver of unnecessary nerfs over the course of three years of Destiny. I could explain all of this to you...

So the reason why Thorn is the way it is is because Thorn has been corrupted by darkness and the "Thorns" it shoots is basically just space magic And on your point on omalan weapons. They fire liquid that is compressed note in the video that it can be done somehow https://youtu.be/-E7u0LNUpO4

        • If a fantasy sci-fi game is supposed to have real physics. Then why the hell can't I warlock melee? I've been practicing on Dr. Pepper cans for 3 hours 😫

          • I am with you I would love to see some of this in the lore. Personally (don't know a lot about guns so probably don't know what I am talking about) I thought the handcannon reload animation was some future version of a speedloader. That the one cartridge contained many rounds each with their own primer. As for scouts I figured it is an arc shaped mag that loads in the back for more barrel and therefore more accurate bullets. Omolon I believe you are loading a battery so you can shoot... stuff.

I'm with you on not understanding how a lot of the gins in destiny work. I'd like to add some of the new iron banner weapons to that list. Some look like they are just a magazine attached to a barrel with some wooden grips, no room for any mechanisms inside. As for omalon guns I always assumed they fired plasma bolts. Bit that blue liquid inside each doesn't indicate that plasma is the correct answer.

          • wow, this is so true. I really enjoy drawing sci-fi guns, but I at least try to make them make sense. I don't understand scouts either. I think a lot of destiny guns are actually energy weaponry, or use some sort of nano storage.

              • Its simple use right trigger to shoot and the press reload button to have more ammo just like real life. Aiming is optional but helps. If you die just keep smashing the respawn button before you get teabaged, also just like real life.

                • I can't speak for some of the guns, but I can address hand cannons (theoretically anyway) Currently there exists guns that don't have a magazine, they have the bullets stacked in the barrel one after another with the powder charge in between each round, and they are triggered with an igniter at each specific location in sequence starting with the round closest to the muzzle. Perhaps the handcannon cartridge can work the same way. Those bullets are stacked in sequence rather than side-by-side like in a traditional revolver. The cylinder then rotates to line the next primer up with the hammer to fire the next round in sequence.

                • It's programmable ammo, it's transmuted into various forms. This is the far future we're talking about. If that isn't enough, honestly, it's just a video game.

                • This post is honestly pointless and a waste of everyones time. If you're going to bring lore into this topic then why don't you use the lore to figure out that this game isn't in 2017... This game is in the far far future where modern day gun designs would be almost as pointless as bringing a musket to Iraq. Make sure you don't make yourself look like an absolute imbecile before you post. Have fun getting flamed by the comments you knob.

                • We also have guns with infinite rounds. Rounds that makes enemies explode from the inside and guns that return ammo. I dont think their worried about realism. All you need to know is space magic and golden age technology. You also dont need to be a gun fanatic to notice the various flaws.

                • Don't forget guns that return rounds, guns that give you ammo when you get headshots, and guns that look smaller than the average pistol, yet somehow are more powerful than a rifle.
