This should end well...
IRVINE – The City Council tabled a proposal by outgoing Mayor Steven Choi to match the amount of money Crean Lutheran High School raises to improve and expand its facilities.
Instead, council members on Tuesday directed staff to return with information on Irvine private schools within the first three months of 2017 so they can make a better decision. Council members said they agree Crean Lutheran is a reputable institution, but it’s not fair to give taxpayer money to just one school.
“We have so many wonderful private institutions of learning here in this city, and I would be hesitant to say that we just want to give support only to one of the great schools that we have,” said Mayor Pro Tem Lynn Schott, who offered the substitute motion that was approved 4-1.
She directed staff to determine the share of city residents at Irvine private schools and how much those schools open their facilities to the public.
The city helps public schools by budgeting $1.5 million for the Challenge Match Grant program, which provides $1 for every dollar raised on behalf of Irvine students attending the Irvine, Tustin and Santa Ana unified school district. In September, the City Council approved doubling the amount of matching grants the city gives for one month.
