The Problem With Our Education System

The Education system that is put in place at this moment in America's History is flawed in so many ways. To make a long story short, our education system expects too much from a general student population and forces them to follow one track for the rest of their lives and quite frankly it's making school boring for the next generation. If the point of the school system is to educate them for their future, why do we force them to learn things that they will never use in their adult lives. Neither of my parents remember half the things they learned in high school as is the case for most adults at this time. So why are we wasting our taxpayers money on it? I'll leave the rest up for discussion and from the linked video.

  • I was shown a video covering this same topic At school It stated that the system we have now is simply outdated for the time we are in, and it's structured to much like a factory of education.

  • The real problem is that we have politicians, whose only experience with the education system is graduating from it, trying to fix it. They do not and have not worked within the system so they do not know how it works. It is similar to asking a tourist at the Kennedy Space Center to repair the Space Shuttle.

    • The biggest improvement we could make in this regard is promoting traditional families with involved parents.

          • The thing is they don't teach the kids at a young age how to learn (the more you think on that the more it makes sense). They go straight to things they won't remember a year later. It's like trying to build a house on sand without laying any foundation first

            • Self motivation. I think all schools should teach this to early age students. They need to understand that just because you fail the first time doesn't mean that's it. You will feel emotional and feel like shit but that shouldnt be an excuse to stop doing work and making yourself a better person. I never had parents who taught me this. They were too busy working, being drunk, and verbally abusing each other. Teachers need to be paid more. They get paid shit. They are teaching children and babysitting them at the same time. Some are going to be misbehaved because of shitty parents. They should also be taught how to handle a misbehaved student. Goals They need to understand that long term goals can change and focus a lot more on short term goals. Try different stuff, and understand that being nervous is a part of life. Helping the unmotivated. There are going to be people who are unmotivated no matter what. Teachers need to learn how to handle, deal with, and help people like that. Understand what makes them unmotivated and what they can do to help the student understand. Do not make safe spaces You will raise a bunch of pussies that need to understand conflict is a part of life and hiding from it isn't going to help anything.

                • Teach kids how to think critically and listen to both sides of an argument. Draw conclusions based on facts and respect dissenting opinions. Oh, and teach them how to not -blam!- up their credit, do taxes, cook a healthy meal, and incorporate daily physical fitness.

                  • Nah, -blam!- that. The problem with the education is they force this One Size Fits All education policy backed by No Child Left Behind. You have people of different intellects in the same classroom doing the same work. Work that was dumb downed in the first place to make sure kids pass because government will punish schools otherwise. And the actual Teachers get almost no input on how they teach or the way they teach it. School needs to be more segregated in terms of intelligence so that way people are getting what they need. Children that don't stack up should be left behind, and schools should not be punished for it. Curriculum needs to be set in a way to change around an individual students needs in the class, and in the later years shape around what they might want to do int he future. Another problem is minimal parental involvement. Parents need to be more involved with their children's education. Work with the teachers and their child to make sure they are being educated properly. The education system has already been dumb down enough. It needs to be stricter. "boohoo how will we use this in real life" is not an argument.

Honestly school could be half as long if they removed the filler BS. School has turned into a glorified babysitting company. They just stretch it out so it lasts until roughly when most parents get out. -Math classes are the worst. Hardly anybody uses any math past the basics. Geomerty, Algebra, Calc, Trig etc are all completely useless for 99% of people past school -Art class is not needed. -Music class is not needed +They need classes that teach them about taxes, how to balance check books, teach them about loans and credit cards, bank accounts, investing etc etc. Americans have become so bad with money. This class could also dive into things like Healthcare -We dont need gym class. I loved Gym class but for real its just not needed. If a kids going to be fat hell be fat. One hour a week of sports in school isnt going to help them Science is important, English class is important, History is important, Basic math is important, Computer class is now important. After that I think one class like I said that teaches about real life problems such as healthcare, taxes, etc is all thats needed

The main problem with our education system, besides not getting nearly as much funding or attention as it should, is that so many schools just prepare students for arbitrary standardized tests that do nothing in providing students with useful information or experiences to be able to be used to obtain work or succeed in their position. It basically at this point just wastes people's time and resources while not teaching students anything of significant worth or meaning.

                        • The education system is also extremely one sided. A Conservative student will learn so much more due to constantly having their beliefs challenged, whereas a liberal student will not learn anything because they're essentially stuck in an echo chamber. To have your beliefs challenged is a huge part of being properly educated and liberals just simply don't get that.

                          • School is not about job training and teaches a broad spectrum of topics to hopefully get people to think for themselves. I hated Calculus and vowed never to work in a field that applied it. I also was not a fan of statistics, but after that class I know that the public is constantly manipulated by marketing, politicians, etc. Not all learning has value, but its the journey, not the destination.

                            • The problem is that teachers are expected to teach to a test (see common core and pay raise/dock based on pass/fail ratios.) There is no more experience-based learning. Legislation dictates the "concepts" (basically a yearly plan with no deviations) that need to be taught. Education as a whole needs to be reformed. Colleges need to stop pandering to far-left ideologies (see safe spaces) and ensure students are prepared for real life in their skills and their mindset (see whiny sjw's.)

                            • Agreed. How is it right that people in this day and age are almost exactly taught in the same ways as people were 100 years ago? Especially with today's technology.

                              • I am 50 years old with 4 years of college then 2 years of grad school then 4 years of professional school then 6 years of training. Much of it was completely useless. I use a fraction of kindergarten through college education for my daily job. A fraction of the education through college helped get me through the rest. It was just a series of hoops to jump through. If I hadn't jumped through the hoops and played the game or made any mistakes I would have been weeded out
not a 420 pun btw
Does high school and college teach you critical thinking and give building block knowledge? Some but very inefficiently and at a high opportunity cost. It is a system that locks many capable young people out and teaches you nothing about managing real life problems and issues that are definitely coming for everyone.

I discovered how bad the education system was on my own during high school. I just seemed to think differently than everybody else. I knew it and I'm pretty sure my teachers knew it. I never studied for tests, ever. I just seemed to get things. I didn't need to memorize things to get good grades, and I always had my own opinion on everything, rather than just following the majority. I was pretty anti social though, didn't have a lot of friends, and never participated in extra curricular activities. In my senior year I skipped class more than I attended, yet I still scored a 98 in advanced functions and 96 in calculus. I would skip class, go get stoned, and play call of duty. In my mind I was a terrible student, I'd be at home enjoying myself while others were at school working their asses off for their shitty grades. And yet I was still labelled as a good student just because of my good grades. College was the opposite. I went everyday, made friends, would help teach them everything I knew to get them to understand. Even in college I still felt like I learned everything easier and faster than others. People were in a panic to memorize everything before the big test. Yet again I never studied. I was also testing myself in my own way at this point. My grades were slightly above average at first. But those that I helped teach, and who memorized before the test, got better grades than me. They all ended up getting internships, and I was one of the few who didn't, even though I felt like I understood all the concepts a lot better than most of them. But the almighty grades spoke otherwise. I ended up losing interest after that and dropped out during my last year. It was more about principal for me. I didn't believe in finishing something that was clearly so screwed up and flawed.

                              • Educators claim to understand how to connect with students to help them best understand the concept. They do not. That's the simplest reason. They refuse to believe that people learn differently, and while they cannot cater to each person, they force rigidity of education; adaptation and flexibility are frowned upon, and even punished.
