This should end well...
IRVINE – The City Council tabled a proposal by outgoing Mayor Steven Choi to match the amount of money Crean Lutheran High School raises to improve and expand its facilities.
Instead, council members on Tuesday directed staff to return with information on Irvine private schools within the first three months of 2017 so they can make a better decision. Council members said they agree Crean Lutheran is a reputable institution, but it’s not fair to give taxpayer money to just one school.
“We have so many wonderful private institutions of learning here in this city, and I would be hesitant to say that we just want to give support only to one of the great schools that we have,” said Mayor Pro Tem Lynn Schott, who offered the substitute motion that was approved 4-1.
She directed staff to determine the share of city residents at Irvine private schools and how much those schools open their facilities to the public.
The city helps public schools by budgeting $1.5 million for the Challenge Match Grant program, which provides $1 for every dollar raised on behalf of Irvine students attending the Irvine, Tustin and Santa Ana unified school district. In September, the City Council approved doubling the amount of matching grants the city gives for one month.
4 RepliesFor you kids that dont know the law: Private schools and institutions cannot receive public money. If they do, they cease to be private and must conform to State and Federal regulation.

4 RepliesBut it's not a public school...?

18 Repliesgood, statistics show that students form christian private schoolers end up with much better jobs and careers then those who go to public schools. this will help the next generation. this country was built on christian teaching, and it went well, we need to get back on track.

I mean once they do that it's not really private anymore is it?

3 RepliesI am not saying this is right, because it is a private school, but I do know there are a number of church schools that do not teach their doctorine, they just believe in giving a quality education. I have no problem with those schools. I know of 1 on my old route, they get some help from the city for their scholarship programs & anyone can earn that scholarship. They also do not make the students go to that church or preach their doctorine, they keep the 2 seperate. So hopefully, it will be a good thing like that & not just another way for them to make money & gain more parishioners.
The median home value in Irvine is $764,100
I think they can afford to slide a little cash to worthwhile projects. After all, the people sending their kids to private schools still pay property tax... - Der

1 ReplyIf there weren't taxes we wouldn't have to deal with this anyway.
-
3 RepliesThat's great I applaud your city council for actually doing something that might improve the education of your area, my city just dumps more and more money into our public schools despite consistent failure.
-
1 ReplyProbably wants to invest money into something that works...
-
13 RepliesIt makes sense to subsidise the projects within a private school which will make it more desirable and will drop costs. Due to this, people will move to private, seeking a better education. This will take the strain off the public system which will reduce public costs so you are really, at worst, breaking even here.

3 RepliesThat's already been going on across the country for years.

2 RepliesIf you're giving tax money to private schools, then stop making them private schools. Make it a public school.

Edited by blackwolf957: 11/27/2016 3:36:54 AMYou live in Irvine! No way! I should also make it clear for #Offtopic, that has a student here in Irvine, the public school system here is superior than almost all the other systems in the entire nation. There should be absolutely no reason to attend a private school in Irvine and giving them the collected tax-money, specially when most of the people here pay the high enough taxes so that their children can have good education. Giving the tax-money to a private school is straight up outrageous, people live here for the school system not for Crean Lutheran Highschool (which by the way, they are a bunch of douche bags that don't even live here in Irvine.)
