2 RepliesIt is a sin, but it does not automatically send you to hell. In the Catholic Church, there are two types of sins: Venial and Mortal. Venial sins are the "smaller" sins, while they are still evil, they will not get you sent to hell but have you spending time in purgatory. Mortal sins are sins that, if unforgiven at death, ensure that you will not be allowed into heaven. In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three requirements: the action must be of grave matter, the subject must have knowledge that it is a sin, and it must be done with full consent. Masturbation is considered to be grave matter. So if somebody knows it is such, but chooses to do it anyway, then he or she has committed a mortal sin. However, the church also teaches that psychological factors, certain passions, and other external factors can diminish the culpability of the subject. In other words, it may not always be mortal. However, the effects will still be harmful. When you masturbate, you are opening pathways in your brain for self-gratification. You are inviting carnal imagery into your mind and as such, you are slowly changing the way you think. Sex becomes less of an intimate union between a married man and married woman, geared towards procreation, but of selfish desire.
