So my wife and her family love a good game of D&D. Unfortunately I've never played any table top rpgs, much less D&D, and we'll be starting a game this weekend. Any tips, advice, or commentary is welcome and would be greatly appreciated.
Edit:
had a great time on the first campaign, it was very basic because they wanted to get me used to it, but I had a lot of fun.
Edit: I'll edit this OP later with an update on my experience.

Don't pull a Henderson. Trust me. Last time I did, was the last game I played.

3 Replies1. dm is >than the book. (books are more guidelines in some games) 2. just because you roll a natural 20 doesn't mean you will succeed in what ever you are doing. it just greatly helps. 3. Dm is right 4. do not meta game not even a sneaky kind like "oh so and so has been gone for x time I'm gonna go look" or "no reason but I wanna go to this random area". if there are no overt clues then your character probably won't know. at best if you are lucky your dm will have an "intuition" type roll. 5. be prepared to handle serious rage. sometimes the dice aren't with you, or sometimes it will feel like the dm is against you. D&D (depending on how you play) is like gsme of thrones, main characters (your characters) can and will die. 6. don't have everything a joke(unless your character is built that way). if it's a serious moment treat it as such or your character might have an accident of some kind. I'm gonna guess you are going pathfinder D&D which I think is 3.5 so you can get away with a lot. 7. BE CREATIVE (within reason) keep your dm on their toes. I ran a fighter dual welding exotic swords. But he always had a plan. -oh ally fell into a pit with ravenous dire wolves?- "Ranger see if you can tether the ground with a rope tied to your arrow so he can climb up while I fend them off for a while" etc. 8. DM rules only. 9. try to play with a clear mind, if you piss off the dm or a party member before play then you are gonna have a bad time. 10. Remember shit happens in the game. 11. do not dual class to soon or prestige too soon. (the only thing I did was get my sorcerer high enough and switched to fighter. he had dragon blood so when I prestiged I with with the dragon kin for better damage and def.) 12. Not ever battle/session will result in a level up. 13. some "sessions" will just be a level/shop session depending on time constraints. 14. don't get impatient. some things will take a while, other will be done in the blink of an eye. former dm/player. I have a ton more but I think this is pretty wally enough lol.

1 ReplyEdited by ConjoinedAndriod: 11/7/2016 11:17:56 PMUnderstand that your DM had to put work into each session. Therefore don't ask him to chip in for snacks or drinks.

1 ReplyNever piss off the dm. Also, the chest is probably not a chest.
-
1 ReplyIf your feeling lucky, get your character drunk. 1-10 rolls default to 0, but 11-20 are 20s

1 Reply1)your alignment effects how you can roleplay. For example, a lawful neutral or good won't want to burn down a house because it at least killed the abomination that is a spider
though that could lead to an interesting situation
2)Never piss off the Dm because they will strike you down with a fierce vengeance. 3) don't try to seduce a bear unless you have 15+ charisma. My friend learned that the hard way when she got her face clawed off after failing with only 11. 4) be wary of drinking contests for you might wake up in someone else's bed with a goat and a tattoo on your thigh that says " lawfully yours- Durben the Wall."
most important thing to know is to have fun
1 Reply-Play your character how he/she is geared towards their stats in order to make the best of them. You don't go and recruit Timothy the Actual Boulder into your party and then try to fight an Anti-Paladin because you believe that you've decided to pursue career choices. -Take notes of how your DM is setting the story up. It is quite possible to derail your party's goal and not piss off the DM if you play your dice right. Bring booze to loosen the DM up a bit. -Be careful around doors. Seriously, don't trust them.

6 RepliesEdited by orkdestroyer1: 11/7/2016 2:38:39 PMKatana's are VERY weak, Dont be a Weeb and think they're awesome Attempting to burn down the tavern ALWAYS yields funny results DM has Final Say DM HAS FINAL SAY, DONT QUESTION IT If you piss off the DM, he will do "Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies" Dont piss off the DM Dont open chests without a spear type weapon (as they may be trapped/mimics) Dont roll a 1

2 RepliesGet carried away with. They are very very fun if you go in with the mindset of 'dance like no one is watching'.
-
2 RepliesJust rp. Don't piss off the dm. And sm always has final say. Good day sir.

6 RepliesWhat edition are you guys playing? D&D Next?
-
3 RepliesThe advice I can give you really depends; which edition do they play?
-
3 RepliesRemember, its role play, pretty much acting. Try not to do what you want, but what the character would do. If you ever find a catch phrase after a kill or stunt that you like, please don't over use it.. for example, i had a buddy who would say "looks like you've been, disarmed" whenever he would cut off someones arm, and he'd say it in a weird way like as if he were trying to sound french. He'd say that one every character he played. It was kinda funny the first time but only got annoying and cringy after.

1 Reply"I roll to seduce" makes you officially the biggest asshole at the table besides the DM. Don't drink or eat random things or from random people. Always keep track of your shit.

5 RepliesCreate the punchcat. And make constant jokes about how jesus saves, and the rest of you take full damage
