My thoughts on the current state of Trials of Osiris and how to improve it for everyone
At first I'd like to say I am sorry for any mistakes in my write up. I am not a native english speaker, but want to give feedback about my Trials of Osiris experiences, how it changed and how to improve the experience for everyone.
I think about myself as an above average PvP-Player. Destiny PvP is the greatest thing after sliced bread for me. The Abilities and Movement. The feel of the guns. Unfortunately this unique experience is and was not always as satisfying as it should be. I witnessed many metas come and go. I usually try to do something different and not succumb to this meta. But this post shouldn't be about weapon balance or ammo economy. It's especially about Trials of Osiris and it's matchmaking When first released with House of Wolves, Trials of Osiris was engaging and fun at the same time. I played with my fellow above average friends I've known for so long running Raids and Iron Banner with. I made it quite a few times to the Lighthouse. I loved it. There were sweaty matches, for sure, but atleast Bungie guaranteed the best connection possible. Running into a team with bad connections was very uncommon. Sure, the first match could be a cakewalk, but it also could be a trial by fire eventually us getting a new ticket. The most important: I could succeed with my good friends and non-meta Playstyles (Succesful Defender Titan Ticket!) and had not to fear bad connections change the outcome of my match.. At the beginning of The Taken King I made it a last time to the lighthouse with my friends. But then something changed. I don't know what exactly, but I can feel it. It is like steamrolling til the sixth stamp on a ticket and then hitting a wall. Why is that? It is because teams with equal cards are most likely to be matched since that update Q4 2015. Lower skilled players stay at lower tier tickets and higher skilled players will kick your butts at the end. These things aside, the economy of Trials of Osiris also changed. Scrolling through the different websites providing lfg-services, there is a huge gap between three major groups looking to play trials. - People who only want to complete Bounties because they know they won't succeed - Highly skilled People only looking for other highly skilled People for various reasons - Carries for Money (usually 50$ and up) This leads to the phenomenon of steamrolling the first few matches against players completing bounties and then hitting a wall of highly skilled players. The poor get poorer and the rich get richer. I respect those highly skilled players and their search for the ultimate challenge only available in Trials of Osiris. And I respect those willingly getting stomped for the opportunity to get some loot through the bounties. But I do not like the fact, average people trying their best to succeed only to be thrown out of the competition by those who know they are good and make a profit out of it. If this is allowed, I don't understand why trading is prohibited because it would grow a real money economy while the big money is already made by Trials and Raid carries. I am not the person to criticize something without giving a few suggestions to improve the current system for all skill levels alike. My solution sounds simple on paper, but I know that it sometimes can be very complicated to be implemented. So bear with me: First and foremost I'd like to see all matchmaking criteria thrown over board and connection quality being the number one criteria like in Y1. No more losses due to bad connections against Jose from spain, Mike from California or Ivan from mother russia. I am german btw. Creating two pools of players for the current week: - one with fireteams consisting of one or more flawless players of that week (character specific) - one with fireteams consisting of non-flawless players of that week (character specific) In my theory, this would provide multiple positive outcomes of current problems: - most important: the carry economy would take a major hit, because a carry will be more difficult after the initial three runs, because the carrying player would face all out other flawless players on his way. A person carried by someone else also does not deserve the loot of a flawless compared to people playing honest and practicing. - highly competetive players looking for the ultimate challange will be facing their own kind more frequently - the pain for those only doing bounties will be eased because of the lower skill gap - average people will still have a chance on lighthouse loot by pulling their A-game without the devastating experience of being toyed by the PvP 1% - the feeling of being locked out of a good amount of content is much lower because there would be a chance at the end of the weekend most S-tier players face their own. Knowing the Bungie Forums for their culture, please spare me the usual "git gud, noob" and the like. You may be better than me, good on you, but please consider, everyone has their individual top skill which he/she can't get passed. I could pay a Carry, but for what? It wouldn't be achived by myself. I would kick out other people who play it with their friends. I would be a hyporcrite. I am only looking to give some thought on how to improve the game for everyone. And I'd like to see the lighthouse again, without paying for it. I sure have some other changes in mind, but I don't want to water down the activity/experience too much. It should still be a Trial. That being said, thanks for taking the time. I'd really like to read your thoughts and suggestions. Stay positive and stay save, Guardians.

  • I agree with that matchmaking needing to be connection-based, 100%. There is no better way to ensure a fair game. Bungie claims that Trials is win-based, wherein the number of wins in your card is the main criterion for determining your opposing team. I call bullshit on that, as there have been way too many times my first match on a card sent the other team to the lighthouse, meaning my 0 wins matched with their 8. However another major problem with Trials is the gamer community. Seriously. I know most of us simply want to play a game, have it be competitive, and have it be honest. Farming needs to stop. Paid carries need to stop. Cheaters, lag-switchers, dossers, need to stop. If people played the game in the way it was intended, and we had a fair matchmaking system, Trials would be better. Play the game is it is meant to be played.

  • I agree it's impossible to go flawless if you're not above a 1.6 kd

    • If you think separating flawless and non flawless will do anything... People just won't go flawless all weekend until Monday and play till they need to reset lol. Also that would ruin a lot of streamers content not being able to do carries so -blam!- that. Just practice the game and get better Jesus lol.

      • No, no, a thousand times no! I keep seeing these damn posts about separating flawless players and non - flawless players in trials of osiris. I am far from being a top tier player and even I understand that the lighthouse is only meant to be accessed by the best of the best. That's the point of the trials. Osiris and his disciple are testing the guardians to see who are the best fighters, the best team players etc. Not the players who can beat other players of their skill level. Now, I apologise if I come across as hyper aggressive, but when we speak/type in a calm voice nobody listens. I don't doubt for a second that matchmaking in general needs fixing, because there are far too many connection issues in pvp, but that should not, and will not, be accomplished by separating people into skill groups. In casual pvp, namely the crucible, this is fine, as long as connection is the priority, but hardcore pvp, namely the trials of osiris, should be all out combat where only the best reach the end.

There are 3 options that Bungie can do to improve ToO experienced while keeping the same MM the idea. 1-leave as is ((I hate it some ppl love it)) 2-introduced CP system total of 10 wins each 2 wins is a check point you can't go below that so you can try again and again and your time invested will be respected but you shouldn't be allowed to get flawless ornaments or emblem. 3-revert back to Y1 MM ((same deal but it's the luck of the draw most of time certainly better then the current system)) Personally I've done the book part and I'm done with trials it's either you stomp them or vise versa it is extremely rare to find an even match. Just my 2cents.

        • I agree so much and have been asking for this since about the start of 2016 when things become to hard for the average player. I was really looking forward to this dlc in the hope they would bring in flawless vs flawless but it didn't happen. First weekend there was a lot of people playing who perhaps wouldn't and it weren't so bad, second week in back to normal can't get past 6 wins. At beginning of ttk I wud always at least get 7 now it's just a nightmare. I really wish they could implement something to get more players back in trials

        • Some great ideas and from people below as well but bungie will not change the mode as they benefit so much from the economy that has built around it. The rewards are highly desirable and people want them so much that it is worth a lot of money for streamers who make the game popular on twitch and YouTube. If they limited flawless runs or something similar, thestreamers would have far less viewers or the price of carries would go up by a lot. What they could do is offer the gear and rewards directly for silver.but that causes other issues too.

Flawless lockout weekly reset juzt like raid completions once a week then it might stow the steamrolling i mean i went 5 wins on a ticket today and you know when we wanted six come nope shut down three bs teams of titans using jugernaught and matador 64 pathetic imo. these are the so called pros the so called top tier players more like filthy grubs that dont have any real skill oh and btw chuck some ddossing and lag switching in the mix too and you have trials of osiris games

        • easy way to fix it as this happens to be the worst PVP experience anyone can attend. load up one match, counts as win, instant tower, get all gear in one shot.

First off, your English is far better than most native speakers, lol! Second, I completely agree with everything you suggested. I would like to add that I am/was in the top 1-2% in Trials and 1% in rumble and I still face the exact same issue as you! You would expect it wouldn't be bad with my skill plus other above-average friends, yet we still get the same wall at six wins (sometimes less). UPDATE: So I completed my first Year 3 card yesterday and went flawless without using mercy. I played with my regular guys and while we had some tough matches, none were like the ridiculously sweaty matches we would previously get at six & eight wins. I must say, that was one of the most enjoyable cards I've played! Maybe they have adjusted Trials matchmaking right after all, only time will tell.

        • Honestly, let's be real. They could balance the check book. They could leave it the way it is. Everybody is heated about not or never getting to the light house. And everybody loves that team that just sits down for 5 rounds. But it's not going to get any worse or any better. I'm sure bungie has tried to work out some kinda of way to even the table. People say it's not good enough, others say it's even worse now. But here is what I say. If your one of those people who just gets so pissed off about getting smashed all the time, or if your one of those people begging for help from friends or groups and are constantly getting let down or plain rejected. Then don't play, it's not worth the stress or the time, or the disappointment. But I mean it don't play it at all. No bounties, no armor, no weapons, no nothing to do with trials. The sweaties want to spend a full weekend sitting in front of there TV trying to go flawless yelling at each other and just plain getting pissed. Let them, let all the try hards play against themselves, let the streamers play against themselves. So they can be just as frustrated as you have been. So they can experience an OP match. But it's starts with you and your group and friends not playin trials at all. Not for any reason.

        • Lol reading these replies obviously those flawless guys dont want to be matched against someone of equal skill and throw down the "red bar" card. Haha seriously grow a pair, or are you guys that scared of being faced with a team that is doing as well as you? Because in that case those of you who just want to fight none flawless teams who are under skilled are no better than those who ask for carries and you deserve the rewards less than those teams still trying for flawless.

        • So wait, destiny pvp is second to sliced bread? What about a family? Your life? Your sight, hearing, ability to walk? Destiny pvp comes second before all of those things. Even sliced bread, I mean, I love sliced bread an all but compared to a family? My life? Nah son.

        • How to improve trials? Make it more competitive by removing special ammo crates and only spawning in with special ammo ONCE in the entire match so players have to use special more tactical also to prevent players from hoarding up special every round and using nothing but specials Also make it so that Super can only be available for use on 4th round only This will prevent players relying on Super whenever they get the chance to use it. Also prevent warlocks from cheating death when they got shot down fair and square in a game mode called 'Elimination'.

          • Plain and simple, put the game back to connection based. It solves everything! Anybody refusing to see this as the absolute biggest problem with Trials is not only blind, but stupid. Far too often do I get kicked from matches because someone's else's connection is lagging the game too much. And far to often do I not receive the kills I should receive because someone else is lagging so bad that 90% of my bullets don't register. And this lame exepience is only ever encountered in Trials. It is absolutely ignorant for anybody to not acknowledge this as a more than legitimate problem.

          • This post misses the entire purpose of trials. It's not for everyone. It's not a ranked mode, it's not a mode that everyone can win at. Better players go to the lighthouse. Not every single part of every game is all inclusive. Get better at PvP by practicing elimination with a dedicated group. I've lost to very low elo players who had good strats and coordinated well. The lighthouse isn't a handout location. If you aren't good enough to go, then that's that.

              • I really do like the sound of this idea. And especially with that sixth match wall. Has happened 6 or 7 times these past two weeks. Up until that point the matches are close and exciting. After that you hit the elite -blam!-ers like kemosabe and get wiped until you need a new card. Bump. And -blam!- off kemosabe, i as well as many im sure are sick of you saying the same old shit every time someone wants a positive change

              • If you're not making it to the lighthouse it's because you don't work well with your team or they are just bad. You're good enough to go if you have a decent team. I have a team and we all have lower K/D's than you but we still go flawless

                  • So this idea has been kicked around 1000 times on here and here's what hurts it. Anyone wanting to carry people or have an easier time can just wipe their card at 8 wins and keep right on carrying in the weaker pool of players. Someone suggested the card only be removable via completion but people quickly assured us they'd be fine to go lose the three matches and then keep right on carrying. Apparently the time it takes to lose those games is worth the money they're making. Go figure. People just need to let trials be. There's no reason to dumb it down for less skilled players.
