This isn't a post to bash people who choose to watch twitch. I'm simply trying to understand the appeal. There seems to be a culture surrounding it that emphasizes ideas things of community and friendship. I see a lot of twitch streamers talk to their viewers as if they were buddies or in some cases use terms of endearment like "I love you", "you're beautiful" etc. Are regular twitch viewers lonely souls who seek friendship and community through this medium? I'm sure some are but not everyone, so who are you?
I also don't understand why people choose to give their favorite streamers money. I think I know where that started because I see many smaller streamers asking for donations to help build their channel. On the other end of the spectrum you have streamers who make a very good living from streaming. People like gothalion seem to make enough money from the venture to be in the top 1% of tax payers based on his luxurious house. So I ask, why give people like him your money when you eat ramen noodles and live in a crappy apartment? I know not every person who donates is in a situation like this but I'm sure some are. Why do they do it?
Twitch seems to be overtaking everything about community in gaming. I don't if it's a generational thing and this is just what the younger generation is attracted to or what... but I'm curious to learn more.

It allows me to preview games and decide whether or not I would like to buy a game. And Ive only donated during charity events, cuz yea, charity...
-
People watch twitch for the same reason people watch sports on TV.
-
1 ReplyI watch Twitch Fails on Youtube when i'm bored but that's it. Some of those are amusing. I don't watch any Twitch channels. Gaming is like Snooker and Golf to me, I love playing it but it's boring as -blam!- watching other people play.
-
I like the streams where I can't see the streamer and the only talk is pertinent to the game. I really can't stand the ones that scream like everything is a surprise to them or constantly try to be comical.

1 ReplyEdited by TreeMan_X: 10/5/2016 2:24:22 PMWhy do you watch sports? Why do you waste your money on sports?

2 RepliesThe only time I use Twitch is when Dartigan does his reasurch stream for his GameSins videos.

Same reason anybody watches anything, for entertainment. As for the money? People who enjoy a particular streamer want that streamer to keep on going with streaming, so they donate in order to keep it going. All in all, as long as you're getting your food and making sure everything's good with family and your bills, spend your money on whatever or save it.
-
I have never donated to a twitch streamer, mainly because I'm poor as dirt and paying school fees. But as for watching it... It's just like a talk show, or a podcast. I used to watch Gothalion like every morning, because he was funny to watch, he had good opinions about the games he was playing, and like you said, he really appreciates everyone who watches. It's not really about watching the gameplay necessarily, it's more about the person. I watch Professor Broman when I want analytical opinions about the game and some funny moments. I watch Datto when I want to see his fireteam take on crazy challenges. It's that simple
-
Same reason people watch sports and spend money to watch sports. It's entertaining and it brings people together. Nothing more to it.
-
Why do people watch (insert sport here ) Why do people go to a movie theater pay $10 for a large soda $8 for a popcorn $15 for the ticket $5 for a small box of candy ? It's the intertaining part I guess

6 RepliesLmao. I have no idea. I'm better than 95% of whoever is twitching. Doesn't matter the game. I'm the greatest

1 ReplyI think people just generally do it as a pass-time activity. Either at work on their breaks or just at home when they are unable to play their own console/games for whatever reason. I used to watch it a fair bit when people were streaming Betas that I didn't happen to get an invite into or wasn't able to play for some reason. Now though, I actually stream to YouTube whenever I play. I used to stream to Twitch but disliked the fact that what I stream gets removed after an amount of time whereas with YouTube it stays forever. BUT Twitch was made famous since it's what the MLG guys at events use to stream so it will always be in favor compared to anything else. But back on topic like I said it's just as Pass-Time like watching TV shows, Car/Motorbike racing and the like.

17 RepliesA better question is why do people watch cars race in a circle.

Because cleavage streamers.

For me it's to see new gameplay in action. Don't mind watching some of the rocksmith players as long as they are entertaining. Just wish more would explain what they are doing especially during raids instead of welcoming people to the stream or thanking everyone for likes/subs and donations. The bedroom dj's could be better if they played decent shit!
-
More players use twitch because you don't have to edit of follow the new bullshit YouTube guidelines and the no swearing policy, it's just less work over all, donations are also easier

8 RepliesI believe it's a psychological disorder but what more can be expected of the generation that believes in 20 something genders

Same reason why people watch and follow any sport teams, by their memorabilia, tailgate, and get in fights in bars when someone tries to rub in the fact the freaking vikings finally managed to beat the packers only once in a long time and pretend like they just won the damn superbowl! Its the interaction with the source of their entertainment and wanting to support it, and also the sense of community with those around them who feel the same....but in digital format.
-
Pretty much the sense of belonging to a group, works the same way for youtube, look how big Pewdiepie's Bro Army is now, you wanna be a bro, we all need it nowadays.
-
Because her Famas is godly.
-
It's fun to watch for me when I don't have access to the game. I mostly watch smaller streamers, so I usually interact a lot with them, talking and having a conversation. I guess it's just fun to discuss with another person who shares your love while being able to watch a game.

Well 5 bucks a month for hours of streaming everyday (if I chose to) or like 75 bucks for cable on channels I dont care about? Im not one to dish out much for streamers but supporting things you like are great and help artists out. Its like asking why give your favorite musicians money for their album when you can pirate, and then see on their twitter 6 months later that they're on hiatus because they cant afford to devote time to music anymore. Suporting streamers and the like are a hell of a lot better than most money spent on entertainment
