What does, "The Darkness Consumed You," really mean?

We all know that whenever you die in Destiny the 'game over' screen says, "The Darkness consumed you." We've seen it so many times that we've really lost our interest in that statement. But, what is the magnitude of that statement, really? We all know what the Darkness is. It's the force that devours Light and takes advantages of the other races to do so. But, when it says "consumed you." What does 'you' mean? Does it mean our character? Or does it mean the entirety of the human race? We go back and restart our game whenever we die, which makes you think the Darkness can never beat us. But, perhaps when our character dies, it means the Darkness defeated the light due to our death. Like the destiny of the Galaxy is resting upon our shoulders. Whenever we reset may be the effect of the multiple timelines theory or perhaps, rather than playing as our characters we are play the simulations Rasputin is creating in order to find a way to defeat the Darkness. It's a compelling theory. But, it makes you wonder. If our character dies, does the Darkness win?
