Industrial Dark Souls; Does this sound interesting to any of you?

Yes. The Dueling Combat, Hazardous Exploration and Punishing Gameplay are what matters most to me.

No. Part of the appeal of Dark Souls is the Fantasy setting and Bosses.

Upcoming new I.P. The Surge The Surge is a self proclaimed "Souls Type" game with a near future industrial setting.  It features the same Punishing Gameplay of the Souls Series and wraparound map design but takes place in a defunct manufacturing compound.  You are a new worker at a facility where they outfit thier employees with exo suit frames meant to assist with heavy lifting and other job related tasks.  When you wake up from your surgery(?) everything has gone to H3LL.  The facility is crumbling and your co-workers have taken on a "hollow like" demeanor.  Along with fellow employees there are robots of varying size and capabilities to do combat with. The biggest difference in the combat system is that you can target specific body parts or mechanical appendages.  You can bash away at unprotected areas and do extra damage.  Or you can build up an energy meter and use finishing moves to dismember torsos/heads/arms/legs and collect the kit attached to it. After collecting a severed limb you can then return to the upgrade room and build the kit that was attached to it for your own personal use. So does this sound interesting to any of you?

    • It looks interesting but its looking like a super clunky dark souls to me. The movement in swings are weird, the enemies seem to over-telegraph their moves, and something about the mass amount of robot tech with little to no projectiles like bullets and etc is jarring. Like its starting to feel like they went "man I really just want to make a souls game but if I put it in the future maybe it'll be new??" Might be a bit harsh and I do hope its good, its just thats my first take when watching this

      • We'll see how it turns out. I actually enjoyed Nioh's alpha quite a bit, but that was a case where while I enjoyed the combat the level design wasn't massively interesting(plus an actual level map is a turn-off for me in that kind of game). From what I've seen I have no reason to believe this game is going to be much better on that front, and if this is the one I'm thinking of where the devs demonstrated fighting a boss where you had to make its own rockets hit it to open up a weak point and do some real damage, I feel like it's both going to be overly gimmicky fighting(if that's really what they're showing off to market it) and poorly marketed for the audience. An underappreciated part of what makes From's games define the genre is that they throw you into this big scary world with a good deal of unexpected shit, set it up just enough that you learn from what screws you over and develop a sensitivity to what to expect from a given encounter, and then flip you on your head again. All of this while they don't really bother giving you hints. Instead the design does the work and you end up with a very good memory of every single area, one far more detailed than if you tried to recall the details of, say, a block in an assassin's creed game(granted I can actually still recall the basic layout of Brotherhood's hideout island as far as the entrance locations and the Brutus armor location, but I think the point stands). Nioh didn't strike me as really having that thanks to isolated level structure, and unless the Surge does some really unique stuff I doubt a factory setting can really achieve that. And the biggest component of all of this is that you're practically blind. Even if you watch the trailers for a From game, they make a point to tell you approximately jack shit that will actually help you deal with the enemies they tease. Meanwhile the devs here put out a video of a full boss and casually explain exactly how you're supposed to deal with it. It seems like they're trying to market to people who wouldn't have usually played the genre with how they explain the boss' single weakness like it's this interesting little tidbit, and that's not necessarily a wonderful thing. Even Bungie knows that when they market an expansion they shouldn't spoil the raid's significant components(the death Zamboni cameo in their rise of iron marketing is pushing it). If you're creating a kind of gameplay whose fame comes from complexity, nuance, and lack of hand-holding broadcasting its exact content isn't smart marketing for the most ideal target audience. There are plenty of people whose attention would be captured if they made a point to market it in the same fundamental way the Soulsborne games have been marketed. There's a precedent now, it would be perfectly acceptable to be reserved about putting gameplay footage out there even if the dev or their publisher thinks they're too low-key to get away with it. If anything, the people most likely to buy into Souls-style games would probably remember it more with that kind of approach even if it didn't get directly into the mainstream spotlight(and let's be real, these kinds of games have a very hard time getting anywhere near mainstream attention. Even From hasn't really hit true mainstream status and they practically started this). But yeah, rambling aside I'll keep an eye on it. This is most likely never going to hit top priority on my game-buying list. Not unless Activision finally topples, EA becomes an even bigger piece of shit than usual and Ubisoft gets absorbed by Vivendi. And Sony and Microsoft pull a merger. And even then I'd probably be iffy on buying it unless it's an absolute masterpiece. Also, the excessive capitalization in these poll options as well as their wording aggravates me to the point that I want to punch you in the face. Which is a subtle mental trigger I was not aware I had but will now watch out for.

        • Interesting idea, but from what I've seen and played on the beta I think Nioh beats it as an alternative to DS/BB, Samurai scene fits the genre better and the gameplay is really fluid.

          • Looks fun, and when I read abiut it in a magazine I thought it looked cool. Based on the footage it looks like a fun game, and as of now I'll be picking it up a few days after release. Yknow. Cause of cash and reveiws and shit. And possibly Nioh if I can find out when that comes out Gonna admit it, DS3 is the only dark souls I've played, and I want to pick up others like BB and DS2 SotFS, and the ones that are just similar

                • I feel as though Miyazaki is a key part of what makes Soulsborne games. Sort of why DS2 was one of the weakest entries in the series. Lords of the Fallen just felt overly heavy and clunky. Certain bosses also seemed difficult just for the sake of being difficult. I know there was one that heavily punished you just for being a close-range player. It didn't feel good overcoming it like in Soulsborne, I was just incredibly annoyed by the end of the fight. I only played the first Nioh demo and it also suffered from awkward gameplay. I've heard it's been improved, but that first impression already put me off. Devs should really just try and do their own thing at this point rather than trying to capture the magic of Soulsborne. It just hurts me to see devs lowering the quality of their games by trying to achieve that insanely meticulous balance.

                    • Very interesting. In Dark Souls, everything has meaning. The placement of items, the setting, the flavor text, even the mechanics have significance to the game world; there's a reason for it. To make a proper Souls inspired game, it takes more than just punishing difficulty and a seamless world. There needs to be a reason why it's called "The Surge", what is it? Why did it happen? Who or what was responsible for it? How does targeting specific limbs and executions tie into the rest of the game world? These need answers.

An industrial Dark Souls sounds cool, but that's not what the footage shows. The "beefy" appearance makes its seem all to similar to Lords of the Fallen. Theme and setting are always cool to change; they help mix things up in series. However, you can only do that if the gameplay is solid. As soon as I saw him shoulder charge a spider to stagger it I lost interest. Looking back at LotF the shield bash became the only useful attack. This dulled the combat so heavily, but it was the most effective way to deal with enemies. I don't want to sound like I don't like the idea. I'd actually love to have souls game step into other themes like steam-punk and Sci-fi, but that's the thing. I want a "souls" game to take that leap because fromsoft has been doing a great job with their combat. I've seen other developers make good soulslike, but it either because they draw so heavily from Dark Souls or they jump to different genre of game entirely. For example Salt and Sanctuary does a great job of playing like a souls game, but it's a 2d platformer. Titan Souls takes the formula to an isometric layout and makes the bosses more of a puzzle. They don't try to copy, but rather make it their own From what I saw Surge isn't doing that.

                                  • I'm excited about the surge, but idc if it's as punishing as dark souls. So long as it plays like it and is fun it can take my money. Something devs often forget when trying to be like the souls series is it isn't THAT hard. Focus on gameplay first and everything else will follow. I mean yeah give me a challenge, but don't make that a selling point. Give me a game with interesting ideas mixed in and we are all good.

                                    • Trying to hone in on the difficulty and combat of a souls game is like trying to get the sprinkles right and pushing aside everything else on an ice cream cone. Sure the toppings are important, but they don't make the dessert.
