One of my favourite memories of the vault is staying on, when the rest of my clan had gone to bed and just chilling out on patrol in front of the vault, sniping at vex from the top of a pillar and just taking in the scenery.
One of the plates hums to life and that unmistakable sound of the vex machinery clunking as a raid begins. I aim down icebreaker's scope at the left plate and, sure enough, see a team beginning the raid. I quickly switch weapons (pulse rifle to aetheon's, icebreaker to found verdict, and machine gun to gjally) and head over to enter the fray. I quickly weigh up the situation (who looks like they're struggling, are there any guardians down/out of position) and, more often than not, take up my position bolstering the left (bottom plate). Sometimes others sparrowing though on patrol join in, sometimes no-one comes by for the (seemingly) short time it takes for the shimmering sound and series of clunks that signify the door opening.
I rush to the door, waving to each guardian as they enter, and they wave/dance/point in return. Sometimes i'm invited to join due to shortage of numbers and i happily accept. Sometimes the fireteam is full but that extra body has helped make the opening of the door a bit less painful, and that knowledge is all the thanks i need. For all i know this may be the fireteam's first foray into the hidden mysteries of the vault and i've helped them begin their adventure or it could be their twentieth and i've helped save them time and get the door open straight away, it doesn't matter. The ability to do this was sadly missing from Crota and Oryx, and i think may be an element that contributes to the enduring legacy of the Vault.
The opportunity that having the Vault entrance accessible on patrol gave meant that you really never knew how your night was going to end up, and I think that that unpredictability was part of the magic of the early days of destiny. I hope it returns.

1 ReplyI agree those were good times, more to come :)
-
2 RepliesGood post OP, stirred up some great memories when a raid was a raid and help on occasion was just around the corner.
-
1 ReplySo much this. Randomly came across a group really struggling, server errors at the time booted one of there players. They had 2 at the center. Two at the right and one guy failing horribly on the left. I came in like a boss helped them out. Got the vault door open in no time. I Waved....jumped on my sparrow and went on my way.

1 ReplyNot what I was thinking, read the title and thought to my self " What a Moran".....sorry, was thinking you wanted to do Patrol and go into the raid from there, but yes....having the Sync plates in a Patrol Zone was cool was cool, so I'd be good with that.

1 ReplyI love this. ^.^

1 ReplyEdited by ABefuddledLion: 8/6/2016 12:11:11 PMThat was one of the things that makes VoG so great. First time I ever completed it we had a full fireteam and were struggling with plates for at least two hours (was about two weeks after the raid first released). We tried switching up who was on what plate but it just seemed like we could never make it work. Until this dude showed up in patrol (I looked up his stats after and he had three completions at that point) and just went to town wrecking the adds and helping us. It was amazing.

4 RepliesI agree, there was something neat about coming by in patrol, and gelping out with opening the door. Granted the past 2 raids, mechanically, either didn't call for it, or it would have caused drama. Could you imagine running the orbs with randoms getting in the way in Kings Fall? Grabbing the orbs and shit?

1 ReplyWe should unlock all the corners of patrols, unlock the boss rooms for strikes, the end rooms for missions, entire raids. So much is locked in patrol. What if you want to go see Crota's throne? Go right a head. Or what if I want to go to the sphere thing at the top of the cosmodrome, go ahead

5 RepliesI want to do a six man patrol. You can't do the missions though...
-
1 ReplyWell said guardian
-
Yes 👍
-
1 Replyreminds me of the time I helped a VoG group out with a pike lol. fun times
-
3 RepliesThey even said this. "The new raid is not going to be an infinite descent into the ground, you'll even be able to see some encounters from patrol." Imagine seeing like the totems from patrol
-
1 ReplyThe Game Informer info suggests that you can see the raid areas from the plague lands, so maybe... Maybe.
-
1 ReplyThis so much First VoG Raid was because I was in the area when a group of 4 were trying to get in Helped them out, got an invite and grabbed a friend...got to Maze before we gave up(only one guy had been farther)
-
1 ReplyI miss it!
-
2 RepliesI always enjoyed helping a struggling team. Always the lower, left plate that would cause their struggle.
-
2 RepliesThey already said that it was!
-
3 RepliesThis. I do this all the time. Maybe not as much since TTK dropped, but I still check it. Actually started VoG yday by joining a group of randoms while I was on patrol.
-
1 ReplyI agree I have done vog a few times by farming there.
-
4 RepliesThey confirmed this is how it'll be in new raid
-
1 ReplyI remember every time I was doing patrol I did the same, helped out and same as you got a thanks or an invite because they were short. Good times.
-
2 RepliesI remember being on late at night, or early morning depending on how you see it, doing the exact same thing. If I got an invite, I was glad to walk anyone through that hadn't done it before. Then they took that away. That was a sad day when you could no longer help new guardians get into the vault.
-
Yea it would be easier.
-
1 ReplyI'm pretty sure Bungie said that a good portion of the Raid will take place outside. To me, this just increases the likelihood that we might have something like VOG.
-
1 ReplyYea it was kinda like you could turn on your LFG "flag" by hanging out there. Happened to me once. Doing pretty much this same thing. So why not Make Destiny Great Again!?
