One of my favourite memories of the vault is staying on, when the rest of my clan had gone to bed and just chilling out on patrol in front of the vault, sniping at vex from the top of a pillar and just taking in the scenery.
One of the plates hums to life and that unmistakable sound of the vex machinery clunking as a raid begins. I aim down icebreaker's scope at the left plate and, sure enough, see a team beginning the raid. I quickly switch weapons (pulse rifle to aetheon's, icebreaker to found verdict, and machine gun to gjally) and head over to enter the fray. I quickly weigh up the situation (who looks like they're struggling, are there any guardians down/out of position) and, more often than not, take up my position bolstering the left (bottom plate). Sometimes others sparrowing though on patrol join in, sometimes no-one comes by for the (seemingly) short time it takes for the shimmering sound and series of clunks that signify the door opening.
I rush to the door, waving to each guardian as they enter, and they wave/dance/point in return. Sometimes i'm invited to join due to shortage of numbers and i happily accept. Sometimes the fireteam is full but that extra body has helped make the opening of the door a bit less painful, and that knowledge is all the thanks i need. For all i know this may be the fireteam's first foray into the hidden mysteries of the vault and i've helped them begin their adventure or it could be their twentieth and i've helped save them time and get the door open straight away, it doesn't matter. The ability to do this was sadly missing from Crota and Oryx, and i think may be an element that contributes to the enduring legacy of the Vault.
The opportunity that having the Vault entrance accessible on patrol gave meant that you really never knew how your night was going to end up, and I think that that unpredictability was part of the magic of the early days of destiny. I hope it returns.

3 RepliesIn a charity stream Lucas Smith actually talked about this, he said it won't be happening again due to data conflicts along with wanting raids to be personal and not allowing others in the outside world influencing raid experiences. I thought the entrance to vog was cool though. I helped manny people open the door when I was farming for spirit blooms lol it was fun

2 RepliesI remember I was practicing my aim one day over there and I saw some people starting the raid. I minded my own business as I figured these dudes would be fine. Suddenly, I see two guys dying and I saw they were low level, so I jumped up there and helped out. I was sent a quaint little message. "Thanks for helping, first time doing the raid" It was cool

I liked that too! Got a few raids done myself that started as just helping out at the plates. Would be good to return to that sense of jolly cooperation

So much fun good times

2 RepliesThat's exactly how I got into my first raid in year 1. I was on patrol and happened upon a fire team of 5. I helped them hold one of the plates and once the vault was opened they invited me to the fireteam. I had no idea what I was doing and for some reason party chat wouldn't work but we somehow made it o Atheon. That's when my inexperience and inability to communicate really screwed things up. I didn't know about cleansing or teleporting or any of that shit. They ended up booting me after a few wipes, which I totally understood. I sent the fireteam leader and apology and thanked him for the invite. Even though I got booted it was an awesome experience.

True. I always picked Venus patrol to complete the random vanguard bounties just incase I'd run into a similar situation

1 ReplyThat's how I did VoG & found my new raid team when I was a nub. Just got an invite from helping

1 ReplyYour post pretty much sums up in part why the Vault of Glass is so different from the other raids and is still regarded as the best one in the game.
-
Agreed I enjoyed that feature

1 ReplyI always wanted to see 6 guardians forming the bridge for Crota's End, then falling into the Hellmouth.
-
1 ReplyAnytime we were on Venus patrols and saw Guardians at the Vault we would stop and help. It's a great feeling as they wave before entering.
-
1 ReplyYep! This is how I got my first VoG completion, and it was a HM clear.
-
1 ReplySo many memories, i would help anytime I saw a team when I was patrol, it's nice to help out fellow guardians
-
They could've done that with oryx, but that might screw people trying to do Court. Then again, if they just helped them do it faster it would be better than going to orbit and hoping the next one wasn't a raid.

1 ReplyI always wanted to see other Guardians loading into Crota's End and jumping into the Hellmouth from the other side.
*dreams*
