So I had a dream that inspired a hypothetical game mode for the Crucible and wanted to share to get community thoughts on it.
The game is played with teams of 3 spawning on opposite corners of a winding narrow-corridor maze. The objective is to navigate the maze, find hidden treasures, and bring them back to your spawn point. Doing so grants points for your team. The enemy team will be doing the same, so you'll gain points for killing them before or even after they grab a treasure. Should you kill an enemy carrying a treasure, their treasure drops and spawns somewhere else random within the maze. Toward the middle section of the maze, and again toward the four corners (think about the dots on the 5 on a 6-sided die), there are large open rooms unlike the rest of the narrow corridors. These areas could hold treasures in their centers and thus make key points for traditional gunfights besides narrow hallway strategies. Downed guardians would automatically respawn after a few seconds back at their beginning of the maze, but could be revived immediately by a nearby teammate.
One more gimmick: Guardians aren't your only enemy here. Minions of the darkness patrol the maze. See something on your radar just around the corner? Grab your shotgun to prepare to jump out and nail that guardian before he grabs the treasure down the hall? Oops. That was a Goblin. The low-tier minions shake up the game by making players feel completely surrounded as they try to find their bearings in this Labyrinth. (Only Dregs, Acolytes, Goblins, and Psions would be found here.)
Find the treasures. Bring them back. Kill enemy players. Kill minions of the darkness. Don't get lost. Dying loses all your exploring progress.
Labyrinth. 3v3 Team Objective.
What do you all think?

A maze is a complex branching (multicursal) puzzle that includes choices of path and direction, may have multiple entrances and exits, and dead ends. A labyrinth is unicursal i.e. has only a single, non-branching path, which leads to the center then back out the same way, with only one entry/exit point.
The more you know.

3 RepliesPLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS PLEASE NO TAKEN PSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cool Idea by the way bro! ;-) What about a 6v6 mode in a larger maze with higher level enemies? like Fallen Captains, Minotaurs, Taken Captains, Hive Knights and Cabal Majors? That would force people to buddy up and change their strategies ....

I like the concept. Would it involve special maps?
-
Does it sound interesting: yes Does it sound like something Bungie would do: Not at the moment
-
Something easier would be a scenario like the sunless cell, darker than a rat's ass, and those guys using chroma will be spotted miles away, even the bladedancers and nightstalkers would be spotted because of that faint blue glowing they get when invisible
-
Really cool but it would be a shit ton of work for bungie

Great idea. One thing I MIGHT POSSIBLY CHANGE is that the closer you get to the center w/ the treasures the more powerful the minions of the darkness get, so that the center has centurions, knights, etc.
-
A very interesting proposal however it seems to be too tedious for casuals and hardcores alike.

1 ReplyGreat idea for a game mode. I've been saying for years I'd love to see the gorgon maze turned into a pvp map.

Cool idea

Sounds fun

I would love to see this in the game. Totally new take on PvP, and it would "go along with the story" that Derek seems to need. Up vote!

Add Gorgons to the maze. Then I would be happy.

Fanatics that spawn pools of negation. Cleansing circles in the big rooms that rotate around periodically. Have the ritual of negation of our every once in awhile as well. Maybe just to shake things up

That sounds like a lot of fun. I do have a suggestion, however. What if the treasures were swords, similar to the Hive swords you use several times? That would certainly add a different element. Remove the shockwave attack, and then whoever had the treasure would have to stay out of longer range engagements. Just a suggestion.

I like this idea! What about those VoG chest rooms, perhaps these large room could model off of those. And how about instead of a chest, there could be an axis Minotaur like enemy, one that's difficult to kill by yourself, spurring on teamwork and forcing group vs group conflict. The idea I'm going with is mostly vex based in theory, but let's say after every round, the enemy Ai change race to allow for diversity. The VIP enemies spawn in salvage pod-like fashion where if the enemy isn't killed within a certain time, another one will spawn. This game mode would require teams to have some map awareness (even though it's a labyrinth) to ensure that the enemy team does not gain the upper hand. There could even be mid match events such as VIPs that generate more than one golden age core to spur on more engagements as the team who successfully steals this kill will gain a massive advantage. I'm thinking best of five games with the first team to score ten VIP cores winning that round. When a round ends, the teams are sent back to spawn. This sound good? The problem with a 'capture the relic' game mode is the possible, idk, camp-i-ness? From the enemy team that could result after a team scores a relic. Perhaps there could be those jump boost pads that launch you out into the labyrinth from spawn. It would solve the possibility of teams being trapped in spawn as well as give guardians thrown into the labyrinth a chance to look for the VIPs from the air. Pantheon-like corridors will allow for larger weapon diversity other than just CQC weaponry. As well as limited ammo drops like in a normal crucible match. I don't think bungie wants the crucible to go into this direction....but maybe we could see a faction sponsored event in the future with themes of this. -pls bungie- There could even be some lore behind it, like for instance "[insert faction name here] wants to expand into golden age research in hopes of improving on technology. Take back the golden age relics that the enemy has stolen, guardian!" This idea is one that I've longed to see gain awareness on the forums. Pls upvote the post and/or like either the authors post or my comment. I believe that this idea would settle well with the majority of the community and perhaps an event would decide if the community likes this. Bungie has likely toyed with this idea before and may or may not have decided if they like it already, but idk maybe this might come into development. What do you guys think, did I miss out on some game changing pieces that you would like to add?Comment on this and get your ideas out there.

This seems very close to PoE... Different but very close.
