Red Death's name, and what it might mean for Rise of Iron

Red Death is one of the most well-known guns in Destiny. It's a fabled exotic with an incredibly powerful perk, it heals you. The name "Red Death" could come from two possible sources. In the Cold War era, western nations that denounced communism feared what was called the "Red Death" or in some cases the "Red Demise". This was a code name for a nation falling into communist control. But, the origin of the term Red Death along with the most popular use of the phrase comes to us from Edgar Allan Poe, author of the short story "Mask of the Red Death". In the story, a wealthy man throws a party at his home. As the party continues, however, people begin to go missing, dying. The end of the story reveals to us that a man, clad in a mask of the Red Death, has come to claim them all. Knowing some history of Poe, he died long before the start of the 20th century, and if we are to assume that humanity remained the same up until it's encounter with the Traveler, we can believe that in the Destiny timeline, Edgar Allan Poe existed and wrote Mask of the Red Death. The Red Death, is portrayed as being an analogy to the Bubonic Epidemic of the late Middle Ages. You may know it better as "The Plague" (Yes, I'm going there) I believe Red Death is a SIVA production. And, honestly, it makes sense to me. The theory: SIVA was designed to help enhance weapons, but it eventually corrupted those who used them. Red Death is one such example. Red Death is an older model, SIVA corrupted SUROS Regime. I have long thought these weapons looked too similar and had too similar of perks to be independently manufactured. Feel free to add to this theory, take away from it, or just prove me wrong. And one last thing, I don't want to hear someone say "Red Death and SUROS look nothing alike" because that's just wrong.

  • The lore of the Red Death says anytime a guardian finds one he must destroy it. I thought it was used to kill the original 9 Guardians because there are nine hash marks on the side of it thus making it one of the most feared Guns by Guardians

  • Somewhere it mentions how a guardian forged this weapon on his own. He was half mad. I don't think that he was in his right mind enough to go find some SIVA. Idk tho.

    • Putting something like that in the game would require knowledge and skill. Something that nobody at bungie has.

No, lore on red death so far has been a single mad guardian began making red specters and testing them in the crucible, even giving them to other gaurdians, eventually this practice culminated in his creation of red death, it's speculated that this guardian died shortly after creating red death, and his weapon "disappeared", canonicaly we are supposed to report finding red death, obviously we don't, but now red specters have started circulating the crucible again hinting that the "mad guardian" or one like him is attempting to recreate or improve on red death

So I wouldn't necessarily see that as a clue.

              • This is actually interesting because yes the red death is a modified suros that was changed by an unknown guardian. If SIVA tech was used to change it to red death, maybe all the siva weapons like the Cocytus from the trailer have the possibility for the health regeneration perk.

              • Red Death is just a former SUROS Regime that was found on a dead Guardian by a bandit. The bandit modified and hacked the weapon into its present known form and used to kill other Guardians with it. Why Bungie feels the need to first remove "It is a guardian killer." back in Update 1.0.3, as well as change the Grimoire card over time, I cannot answer that question.

I wonder what would happen if SIVA managed to corrupt Rasputin, or possibly another dormant Warmind. What if the Vex managed to augment themselves too? But that Raises the question. Is SIVA self aware? Or is it similar to a Virus that simply infects things with the sole purpose to reproduce. In medicine, Viruses aren't classified as living things. They have no brains, or other organs. They're simply shells containing instructions of DNA. They float around until they can input their DNA into another living thing, in order to make more of itself. SIVA is very similar in my opinion. If it did infect a Warmind, would it bother to fire weapons at the City? Or would it want to infect the Traveler next?

No. It was a weapon changed and reprogrammed from the original Shingen C. In fact, a few other exotic weapons have been created by Guardians.

                      • Red death is a weapon that corrupts the user due to the creator of the weapon going insane and somehow imbued a part of themselves into.the weapon. I like your theory but I don't think it's siva.

                      • How did an auto rifle become a pulse though? I know you're going to say something about Red Spectre, being the prototype for Red Death, but...? 🤔
