Why not make Sniper Rifles realistic?

After reading a "I got sniped; i blame aim assist" thread I started thinking about it. And came to the answer that he was right to be angry, but just about the wrong thing! Destiny is not the only shooter to fall foul of this and I think the entire genre needs to be shaken up and maybe the Destiny franchise can lead the way? A lone wolf running about willy nilly pot shoting people isn't a sniper!!! Wind direction and speed, air pressure, range, light, temperature.............there's a long list of variables that need to be worked out, it's not as simple as point; click; dead. And that's before you consider that it's a snipe team of a few members. My hope is in the future, games will have a trade off where for every sniper on your team you need at least one spotter, who can only equip light weapons and has to provide data for you to be able to fight effectively. I know it's a dream that won't ever happen. But it would be great if it did :)

Most sight lines in destiny are <100 metres. Over that range with a bolt action rifle an experienced marksman could easily quickscope a headsized target. I have tested this my self with an UNLOADED 300 magnum tested this myself. As a mildly experienced shooter I can attest to the ease of doing such a thing. Variables such as wind and air pressure would not affect the bullet path drastically over this range. I am not making the argument for unlimited quickscope a in destiny hit rather the argument that reality and video game balance are not the same.

  • This is a game filled with space magic and it's the future, so why are shotguns worse than our current ones?

  • 1. Most people don't have the knowledge of physics to be able to account for a realistic portrayal of ballistics in a shooter game. Espeicially long-range shooting. 2. Most people wouldn't find that fun, even if they did. 3. What sniper rifles need in shooter games isn't a lesson in physics....but just more realistic HANDLING. They need to handle like the heavy, slow, long-distance weapons that they are.

It's an arena shooter, not a mil-sim. Realism went out the door when space magic became involved.

      • Snipers are currently as they are so users can create the 360 noscope montages. If weapons were realistic you could shotgun a sniper users from the other side of pantheon and everyone would rage quite becuz skillz

      • Maybe people try too hard to keep their k/d trophy. What if we got rid of k/d data? Then people wouldn't mind so much who was in their team in that round and the team work would sync better. And most importantly, people would enter pvp arenas just for the fun of it. In my opinion, that'd even interfere in people's loadout. They'd equip what they like using instead of the "mida/1kys" standard, because they wouldn't be paying much attention to it's k/d. I have nothing against snipers or mida users, but only a few really like those guns; most use it for it's effectiveness. And about your idea...well, that kind of realism wouldn't be good in Destiny, not even pve wise, but snipers indeed should be harder to use. Something like the No Land Beyond. As a primary it's utterly annoying, but as a special, that could work. Note: I, personally, don't like pvp. I play IB just for the cool-looking gear.

Destiny is not meant to be realistic. It's about the feel; snipers feel fine. Why trade good weapon feel for realism? Just because a game has snipers doesn't mean you need to include all the factors that sniping usually entails. Dedicated snipers and spotters don't fit with destiny's player builds, which again are not meant to be realistic but to be cool and fun. Your vision of destiny is everything destiny isn't, and isn't supposed to be. The ridiculous notion of snipers in games requiring the sacrifice of the game's purpose and feel for realism has no place in destiny. Realism does nothing for a game like destiny; we have space magic for -blam!-s sake.

      • This isn't the game for you. There are games that currently exist that are more related to sniper simulation. I suggest going with one of those games. You would have to rework every single weapon in the game, remove class abilities, etc. All because of a weapon class that you don't like how they perform. This simply isn't the game for you.

      • I think it would a great idea. I always wonder how a sniper can keep hardscoping when taking a scout to the face. But then again, that might just be me being salty...

      • Battlefield 4 factors in individual bullet speeds, bullet drop, and proper lead on moving targets. Destiny is an arena shooter and the point and click twitch sniping is no different than call of duty. Destiny is more last gen than next gen.

        • I see where you're going with it and I agree mostly. No, sniping will never be remotely realistic compared to reality, but inching a bit closer to reality could help. Eliminating aim assist on them should be enough to make them harder to use but still a viable option since you can one shot kill from pretty much any distance. But any changes like this should be PvP only.

        • They need to undo the recent changes to snipers and simply make them descope when hit with a precision shot. End of story.

          • Bullet drop and wind physics would have to apply to all other guns as well. Battlefield does the former but I don't think it'd feel right in Destiny what with energy beams and future bullets and whatnot.

I was thinking it might slowdown fast gameplay, also, its hard to introduce this in a sci-fi shooter. If it where for snipers only it would be weird, i mean, how would that affect other weapons. If you like this kind of stuff, try Battlefield. There's a real cool one coming around fall (battlefield 1). For Destiny, i would have to say no. Its a fast paced first person shooter. But thanks for the thought.
