Coming from a guy thats been using high impact snipers since the LDR 5001.
The main argument for "what takes more skill: snipers vs shotguns" is that snipers are harder to use because you have to land headshots. I just don't see it like that though.
The truth is that snipers are so much safer to use. You can distance yourself where you cant be killed fast by the majority of meta weapons, you can pop in and out of cover and still get kills. Even if you miss, youre safe, the same cant be said about shotguns though.
With shotguns, you have to put yourself at risk, either by pushing past the half way mark on the map, going into the other teams spawn, etc. You need to be agile and use your character's mobility. Its not easy to do. Sure, you can get one easy kill. But most of the time you end up trading, either with the guy you kill or you die by his teammate because you put yourself at risk. And in trials, trades are bad for the shotgun user, because they have to advance to get their close range shotgun kill, so the shotguns dead orb will usually be un-revivable whereas the orb that was killed by the shotgun will usually be on his teams own side, so it is usually revivable.
With snipers, you can get one kill and safely walk away. And the fact that shotguns and fusion rifles aren't as good as they used to be, everyone is now sniping, and playing almost risk free. Pvp has mostly come down to a game of pop-in pop-out where whoever gets the first snipe has the advantage. The only risk you put yourself in is getting sniped by someone else. Playing that safe should not be so rewarding.
This has nothing to do with high aim assist. As a sniper main I know nothing has changed about snipers since vanilla when it comes to aim assist. Im not "one of those guys." I genuinely believe the reason people have gotten so good at sniping recently is that everyone uses them now and we've gotten so much practice with them. Nothing to do with aim assist.
All Im saying is shotguns and fusion rifles, and even sidearms need to be buffed so they get more usage. I actually liked the HoW meta better because shotguns were extremely good but still had that risk factor to them. They could still be stopped dead in their tracks or could be traded with. Nowadays its almost unsafe to walk around any corner because there is already a sniper aimed down it at head level. I find myself hitting down on the dpad to see around the corner in third person every time I get to a corner. Its not a good meta at all. Bring back shotguns and fusion rifles!
Again, this is coming from a sniper main.
Tl;dr
Shotguns take a ton of awareness and use of your character's mobility and you have to put yourself at risk for every kill, but snipers are almost risk free to use. Shotguns didnt deserve to be nerfed and should be buffed along with fusions and sidearms to give them more usage.

Noobs just run directly at you with a shotgun and get lucky because well range
-
Yes it is.

Snipers need scope sway
-
5 RepliesSnipers can still be staggered a shit ton, other snipers are you risk, most new snipers only know how to sit back and hardscope, mobile sniping takes just as much awareness as a shotgun user does.

4 RepliesEdited by The 7th fall: 12/25/2015 2:13:24 AMVery well laid out and getting to point without sounding like a crucibaby in need of their bottle. I will say this though: Durpstiny is arguably one of the easiest games to snipe in that I've seen in a while, so mostly anyone can pick one up and do good with one. No bullet drop, no scope sway, recoil is low on most snipers, shot flitch is just pathetic in Durpstiny, no scope balancing by holding your breath, and all the snipers in Durpstiny are semi-auto, no bolt action -aside from NLB, and it's damage is equal to high impact snipers, not super high impact like an anti-tank rifle. Not only do fusions, sidearms and shotguns need buffing to re-introduce more variety in the meta, but Bungie needs to add different types of snipers other than the same old semi-autos.

3 RepliesAgreed, snipers are too generous with their aim assist.
-
I use snipers all the time and I agree I think pvp have turned into a boring affair
-
It's the Bungie weapons tuning Meta......... If something gets used nerf it. If it gets under used buff it. Its weapons socialism....if it works tax it. If it stops working subsidize it. Buff everything to make is all useful and let the map and players style of play decide their load out. Right now weapons tuning drives the Meta train.
-
Meta. That is all.
-
The new Meta is using the term Meta as often as possible.
-
Its pretty lame. The games a lot more campy now due to the big migration to snipers.
-
3 RepliesI think the problem is that people who now pick up a sniper think that you have to sit and stare at a corner. I have always been a mobile sniper. I kind of want shotguns buffed because crucible is so slow right now (even though I think shotguns are in a good place and the nerf hardly dos anything).
-
Is that impossible to flinch a sniper? If you know the meta, understand choke points, etc. then adapt. It's not hard to adapt to a meta. Every choke point you go near, jump, slide, blink, do whatever to make your head the hardest thing to hit. Don't challenge the sniper every time, especially if they are good. Make the sniper panic, because it's damn hard to hit someone going in sporadic motions then side to side.

Too much special ammo, the map designs, and sniping mechanics. You can get ridiculous kills in this game that you shouldn't have gotten. The scoop most of the time don't sway even if you get hit by bullets. Once you attempt to leave your spawn you get sniped. It's not the crucible anymore, it's World War 1 in space

6 Repliesthe new meta is like playing team snipers on bloodgulch lmao
-
Sniper meta not very fun. Just saying.
-
5 RepliesI think some people are going to complain with every rotation. If it doesn't fit their play style then its op
-
A well thought out post with good points. Is this still #Destiny?
-
2 RepliesRemember how you shouldn't blatantly turn a corner with red on your radar during the "shotgun meta?" During the "sniper meta," maybe it'd be smart if you didn't just walk headfirst into someone's reticle? Jump, blink, slide, boost or shadestep. The answer is literally "git gud scrub"

Just released a sniping montage. 4 minutes long, drop a comment and a like please :-)
-
Totally agree. Well said.
-
I find it fine. Actually, I find it more fun. Now, to evade hardscopers, you have to use mobility and get at weird angles, which is quite fun.
-
Bump.
-
1 ReplyI've been using side arms a lot to get prepared for the sniper nerf
-
I'll just add that pvp and pve should be COMPLETELY SEPARATE in nerfs/buffs. And OP, you seem like a solid dude, i agree w ya. Merry christmas
