Coming from a guy thats been using high impact snipers since the LDR 5001.
The main argument for "what takes more skill: snipers vs shotguns" is that snipers are harder to use because you have to land headshots. I just don't see it like that though.
The truth is that snipers are so much safer to use. You can distance yourself where you cant be killed fast by the majority of meta weapons, you can pop in and out of cover and still get kills. Even if you miss, youre safe, the same cant be said about shotguns though.
With shotguns, you have to put yourself at risk, either by pushing past the half way mark on the map, going into the other teams spawn, etc. You need to be agile and use your character's mobility. Its not easy to do. Sure, you can get one easy kill. But most of the time you end up trading, either with the guy you kill or you die by his teammate because you put yourself at risk. And in trials, trades are bad for the shotgun user, because they have to advance to get their close range shotgun kill, so the shotguns dead orb will usually be un-revivable whereas the orb that was killed by the shotgun will usually be on his teams own side, so it is usually revivable.
With snipers, you can get one kill and safely walk away. And the fact that shotguns and fusion rifles aren't as good as they used to be, everyone is now sniping, and playing almost risk free. Pvp has mostly come down to a game of pop-in pop-out where whoever gets the first snipe has the advantage. The only risk you put yourself in is getting sniped by someone else. Playing that safe should not be so rewarding.
This has nothing to do with high aim assist. As a sniper main I know nothing has changed about snipers since vanilla when it comes to aim assist. Im not "one of those guys." I genuinely believe the reason people have gotten so good at sniping recently is that everyone uses them now and we've gotten so much practice with them. Nothing to do with aim assist.
All Im saying is shotguns and fusion rifles, and even sidearms need to be buffed so they get more usage. I actually liked the HoW meta better because shotguns were extremely good but still had that risk factor to them. They could still be stopped dead in their tracks or could be traded with. Nowadays its almost unsafe to walk around any corner because there is already a sniper aimed down it at head level. I find myself hitting down on the dpad to see around the corner in third person every time I get to a corner. Its not a good meta at all. Bring back shotguns and fusion rifles!
Again, this is coming from a sniper main.
Tl;dr
Shotguns take a ton of awareness and use of your character's mobility and you have to put yourself at risk for every kill, but snipers are almost risk free to use. Shotguns didnt deserve to be nerfed and should be buffed along with fusions and sidearms to give them more usage.

1 Replyidk I would still argue that snipers are harder to aim than a shotgun. You are right about risk though, snipers require more aim control but are safer to use and have less risk. Shotguns are easy to aim and involve more risk. I think they need to limit special ammo drastically and heavy and slow down super regen / build up by 25%

I agree

Agreed. Snipers have their place. I dont challenge them at range with a pulse. If shotties feel op at close range.....good, that's how facing a shotty at close range should feel.

1 ReplyEdited by Nëfërātā: 12/26/2015 6:20:26 PM- joins skirmish salvage trials elimination - match begins - three red scopes aim at you from 200 feet after spawning 3 seconds ago. Snipers: yes, yes, it is more skill to team shot somebody with a high impact snipe + high aim assist. Shotgunners are scrubs. *sniper carries last word as "backup".* My question: how delusional is this community, for real. Are some people so stupid here....???

Agreed. Bump.

10 RepliesAgreed Shotgun risks 1. All enemies see you on radar 2. Grenades 3. Melees 4. Supers 5. Other shotguns 6. Team shots 7. TLW Sniper Risks 1. Other snipers 2. Maybe a scout rifle 3. Pure luck Hail Mary grenade?

Shotguns are still good though... well at least in the right hands.

2 RepliesEdited by Dizzlecess: 12/24/2015 7:54:38 PMSniper aim assist is crazy on the still piercer and 1000 yard. Nerf the AA but everything else is fine. It's a lot harder to be a good sniper than a good shotgunners for a good reason. I snipe always but I can always pull out a shotgun and dominate in literally any situation

This is it! The answer! I do agree(mostly), however yesterday my team was REKTED by a team using to shotguns, and a fusion rifle. The main problem that Destiny has here is that there isn't a damage restriction. It would make sense that certain gun are effective at different speeds, and ranges depending on the stats. Sadly that is the closest thing we are getting to balance. A MIDA-Multitool is a good counter to a sniper yes, but an equal counter to a shotgun user, a fusion user, etc. The balance causes an overlap which unbalances it(if that makes sense.)

At least things actually happened back in the shotgun meta.
-
Ahh nice i fully agree
-
Theres no sniper meta
-
This is what pisses me off when other people were complaining about snipers you guys were happy because not many people used them so u had fun playing that way now that everyone is snipping you dont like it because you getting rekt gtfo bish

Edited by G: 12/25/2015 9:52:34 AMi agree with the title. it's the worst getting body shotted and finished off before i can even react.

Stop complaining everything is fine
-
They need to nerf special ammo boxes. Then everything would be perfect.
-
Agreed, except for the shotgun buff. I would prefer if they were made completely useless
-
1 ReplyStop whining if you can't beat them join them, and become better at it than them...
-
Why not make more primary weapons more viable?
-
no shit
-
-
They are simply too strong in closer ranges. Needs to change.
-
Totally agree with you! I snipe most of the time and I liked the shotgun meta better now there are just too many people sniping down ever corner
-
They need to limit the amount of special ammo available in matches. Snipers, shotguns and sidearms are fine; fusion rifles may need a small stability boost. Other than that, all the special weapons are more or less balanced. There's just an abundance in special ammo.
