Enlisted NROTC marines or Reservist?

Looking at joining the marines and want your guys thoughts on joining as an enlisted vs a reservist I'm about to finish high school Am very smart and have a pretty decent GPA Looking at an engineering degree of some type or fire science I have a 3.4 GPA am extremely physically fit (I'm a bodybuilder) good references scored in the 77th percentile on my AFQT I was a foster brother to two for a year and work as an engineering assistant at a helicopter rescue company I'm 17 5'10 184 White Im trying to decide which path I should go If I enlist I want to try and get into the presidential guard units (I really would like to try for HMX-1 but am unable to find much information about getting into that) or marine security forces If I go reserves I'd like to join my home state reserve unit (Oregon) I'm not entirely sure what MOS I'd go for if I do that Or o might go NROTC if I can get the scholarship (not sure if I can) and go to school in pursuit of a engineering or mathematics degree Thoughts?

I was enlisted once. If you hate blindly following orders, hate control freaks, and don't like doing things "because I said so" rethink your life choices. I did 5 years. I learned a lot, grew up some, made a couple bucks - but it isn't easy. I've known way too many ppl that join, and quit before their contract is up. Don't be like that. Make sure you want this. There is no glory. Any feeling of "awesomeness" is quickly destroyed by lack of sleep and sometimes lack of purpose. I'm not trying to talk you out of anything just give it serious thought, because I can't stand quitters.

              • Don't do either. You can go to college for them and become an officer. I think it's free. I'm not going to college. I'm just going to enlist when I graduate in 2020

                    • Don't do it, unless you score super high on the ASVAB, and can completely avoid combat. Or just go to college.

                      • I don't have army experience, but if you're smart I'd be in the reserves. You could probably set yourself up for a high paying job when you're out of the marines.

                        • Coming from an enlisted Marine, go active duty. Lots of people I know who are reservists wish they went active. If you don't like active duty then it's only 4 or 5 years then you can go reserve after if you want. Still it's your decision. PM me of you have any questions

                            • I was active duty for four and a half years after high school and then got out and went to college. Didn't piss away all my money while I was in like most, so between that, the GI bill, and working part time I walked out of a good school with zero debt. That's a great thing of course. Downside is that I was 27 when I finished my bachelors and going to a University with people that were 4-5 years younger, especially after having served, made me feel pretty out of place most of the time. Maybe that was just me though. I would still likely recommend getting a degree first one way or another and then going in as a commissioned officer.

                              • I did 24 years active. Walked away with Bachelors and Masters degree while an NCO and lifetime healthcare for me and wife and a pension every month forever. Traveled to 66 countries and lived in 3 different continents. Big decision, but I lean towards active duty.

                                • I was in the Marine reserves for 8 years and spent 4 of it on active duty between initial training, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Benefits are more rewarding if you do an active duty contract, reserves gives you the opportunity to still have a life. But be warned the reserves freaking sucks after you have been on active duty :/ good luck

                                  • Sorta depends on your financial situation and why you want to join. If you are looking at just doing some good with your time, join the reserves. They are much more likely to actually serve in the local community. Not just some far off land. If you are looking to be career military and have the money go to college first so you can go to officer school. If you are poor and have no idea what you want to do stick with the reserves or join up all the way if you're poor but want college..

                                              • Short answer - Enlisted. Long answer - Army Corps of Engineers or Navy CB's. The Marine Corps does not have engineers or firefighters. Army has better signing bonus but you'll be in basic training for your entire career. Put in 20 years, attend school while you are in, retire at 38 and go back to work in the public sector. Retire again at 58 and never worry about money again. I did exactly what you are about to do. High GPA, well accomplished academically, dreams of being a Firefighter, no money, wanted the title of Marine. Signed up for 1833 reservist. First - you do what feels right for your situation. I don't think I would do it again. Ended up finding a volunteer FF program that paid for all of my training after 1 year of volunteer duty. Skill wise I took nothing from the Corps. Mentally I took it all and would never be able to put a price on it.
