I want to clear this up, because for the last year this has been something I've heard a lot from pve'ers and with Trials approaching the discussion has been looming around the forums.
This statement has always puzzled me. If you are bad at the one thing that actually requires skill in this game, what could honestly lead me to believe that I should trust you on my raid team? If you can't hit the backside of a barn in a pvp encounter, what should lead me to believe that you can take out your ogre and knight?
I'm asking these questions out of sheer curiosity as this has been something I've always been puzzled by. It would be like saying, "I have no social skills but I'm really good at picking up chicks."
The best pvp'ers are also most of the time the best pve'ers. They might not necessarily enjoy pvp and they might call themselves pve'ers but they can damn sure hold their own in pvp. And vice versa.
I would rather a talented pvp'er on my raid team who has never raided before than someone on my raid team who says, "I'm awful at pvp but I'm amazing at pve."
Edit: So far I'm hearing 2 things being said,
1) I've played pve with some amazing pvp players and they were absolutely terrible. My response to this is simply that they must not have been as good at pvp as you thought they were. Anyone who is indeed "amazing" at pvp will no doubt easily be able to take on artificial intelligent.
2) you can't compare pvp to pve. Why not? The only argument I hve seen is that pve has hordes of enemies whereas pvp you are only facing a max of 6 people at a time. And to that, I have to say I disagree with the argument. 6 real human beings vs. 20 dregs. I would vote that the 20 dregs would be easier to kill 100 out of 100 times.
Edit 2: It's funny to see how salty some of you are getting. Please refrain from getting your panties in a damn bunch. I'm simply pointing out a large observation I have noticed throughout Y1 of destiny and sharing my opinion. No need to come in here saying the reason you suck is completely due to lag. That's just a bad look and honestly supports my opinion in a way.
TL/DR: I've now read multiple comments that said something along the lines of, "I carried the guys through POE/Raids who carried me to the lighthouse."
I'm sorry if this sounds rude or comes off as close minded, but Trials of Osiris is easily the toughest, most competitive content in the game, given that nothing is extremely difficult in this game, I find it actually quite silly that someone would say they carried someone through the easiest content in the game, who carried them through the toughest content in the game. I guess what I was trying to say with this post is that pvp players are better at pve than just regular old pve players. And it's apparent that regular pve players are having a very hard time accepting that.

3 RepliesPve is pattern recognition, that's all. PvP is thinking on your feet and adapting. Why else do you think people were able to run the lamps on CE backwards?

Agreed

I'm not great at pvp at all. I won't even attempt to run trials. I have fun in control or mayhem. That being said I'm usually asked to fill a spot in a raid team because I can hold my own with hoarded of predictable enemies. You take AI and watch it and you can predict movement but with a human behind the controls it's impossible to predict anything. Makes pvp a lot harder to me. I'd lots rather have a great pvp player in pve than a great pve player in pvp.
-
Agreed

"Actually requires skill" THIS, my friends is the rare and elusive opinion. Only requires skill to any degree because you've gotta bypass the fact that people usually play like absolute twats to get the W. "Whatever it takes" though, right?
-
Love both aspects of the game. Maximizes loot potential. People who are one sided to what ever side are crippling their chances to getting more loot, but hey to each his/her own.
-
You can compare pve to pvp and you cant its all about your perspective. Look at me for example I have completed a lot of raids, but I have a very crazy experiences where I go ham on people and then get rekted by a handcannon next game.
-
People are random. Game enemies act a certain way and are pretty predictable whereas a person can be totally random in their methods. It's a valid argument imo.

I kinda skimmed your post but there are plenty of situations where I would pick someone for PvP or another for PvE. For example I have a friend, as obnoxious as he is, that is incredibly good at PvP. But I would NEVER take him into a raid. For one, you are dealing with event/time triggered mechanics that if not occurring perfectly could cause some issues for someone who can't contain the freak occurrence. Take the Deathsingers/Oryx encounter. For a typical PvPer the initial response to getting shot at is to jump and dodge, makes sense. But you can't do that if you're standing on a platform. You have to think of other ways to not die, less you want to screw over your whole team. Which leads me into my next point, in PvP you can get away with being a lone wolf if you're good enough, but you can't do that in PvE. You have to think of your teammates. So yes, while Trials is the most difficult activity in Destiny there are plenty of factors/mechanics/situations/back up plans/what ifs that you must keep in the back of your head during a raid that you don't have to consider in Trials.

6 RepliesThe pve kids just cheese the raid lol

I play both. I enjoy both. I'm decent in pvp and boss in pve

PVP is a lot to do with each players connection, also PVP is broke as FK.

2 RepliesYou're wrong. Two entirely different skill sets. PvP is a reactionary event where quick reflexes and quicker thinking prevail. PvE is a stage show, a place where everyone has a role and if you confine yourself to your role and execute with success, your job is done. PvE is a constant rehearsal; raid 3x one week, nail the mechanics and repeat the following week. PvP is constantly in flux and requires more adaptation. I agree that PvP skills translate more quickly to the PvE game but there are plenty of PvP-only types that are abysmal in the raid. Once they learn the mechanics, they'll be fine, but because they don't understand the choreography, and the concept of choreography in general, some of these people are much worse than their counterparts.

4 RepliesPeople who play destiny's pvp "competitively" are just real fps pvp rejects. Someone had to say it. Lol.
-
You're all wrong there are scenarios in which both sides are correct. If op likes pvper's good for him. I want 6 people that know what to do in a raid and don't die and those people are not always great pvp but they definitely aint horrible
-
Let's be honest there is no way that the A.I can compare to the skill level, intelligence and cunning of a real life player in pvp ... Of course players will cope better with pve ; it is easier... if you are terrible at pvp you probably won't be as good as a strong pvp player in pve ..Pvp is all about skill if you are faster and have more accuracy you win . A strong pvp play will be a strong pve player
-
I'm not great at pvp, so I guess I must be worse at pve than I thought. Then again, I always knew that, since I have trouble soloing heroic and nightfall strikes.
-
The gameplay in PvE and PvP is completely different. It's not like PvP is mechanically challenging, it's challenging because of other people who are very good. PvE mechanics are basically you learn it, then apply it and boom, you've beaten oryx. PvP is much less linear than PvE so I do disagree with you, but I understand where you're coming from. I'm decent at PvP but I'm much better at PvE personally :)
-
I've never competed a PvE event with someone that someone that is PvP sweatball. They all end up being terrible and leaving because they don't know what they're doing or they get kicked
-
I don't care if your 20 light under on hard raid no AI can compare for a second to actual human reaction time planning skill and strategy. You know that.. Right?
-
Big difference. I know some amazing PvE players but can't get a kill in PvP. totally different mind set. I stay away from PvP just because its not fun. I could play Call of Duty all day on PvP but to many bullshit factors on this. One month auto rifles are the best next month hand cannons now pulse rifles. Just don't see how people can play PvP on this. My son is amazing at PvP and he even says its just not good. So spare me the "That's because your not good" I don't have any reason to play PvP when the rest of the game is amazing. When they get good servers and better weapon balancing then maybe. I have tried ToO and my team did carry me. I let my team mates kill the other team and I sat back playing bait. So to me its not the skilled playing PvP it all depends on your mind set.

I'm alright at pve, and a little better in PvP

1 Replypve: shoot the thing until it dies pvp: try and shoot the moving target that's blinking shadesteping and jumping and probably fail miserably
