Why is wealth shaming a thing?

This is something that has always bugged me. Why do people automatically dislike, or have a preconception of people who are wealthier than them. The more money they make, the stronger the discontent. Why is this? Why do we treat people who are wealthier than ourselves like they've wronged us personally? The most noticeable example has to be Donald Trump. Now before you scroll down all keyboard warrior, I'm talking about people who had a negative disposition before he ever opened his mouth. If you don't like what he has said, well your in the majority. He's pissed off a lot of people, and with good reason. But there are people who instantly didn't like him because he's 'rich.' Or in some cases, 'another old, rich, white republican.' It would be easy to say this is jealousy, but I don't think that's true. It doesn't seem to me that people always want what they have, or at least if they do, they don't even know they do. I want to know what you think. I want to hear an honest argument as to why someone should be looked down on automatically for being wealthy. Edit: In an ironic twist of fate it seems to me, judging by the replies in this thread, that they're the same as any other social class. The few who irritate become the image for the many. Just like: Atheists are assholes, Christians are stupid, southerners sleep with family, etc. Makes me chuckle. This thread didn't go the way I expected it to.

  • Well, for one, the haves and the have nots. And another one I actually have started to notice while on my summer job (a laborer with a tree service). Though it is not always with one side of the other, people from lower end homes are more likely to talk to the crew, offer them refreshments, and give tips to the workers. Again, neither side does it constantly, and it's probably twice a month you'll get offered water and maybe once a month you'll get a tip, but most all the time it has come from a lower end area.

    • Because, for most billionaires, they didn't have to earn their wealth. They just inherited it from their rich parents. They act like they're better than everyone else, and forget that they're rich just because they were born into a rich family. Also (for the U.S.) the government is exclusively controlled by old, white rich pricks. They play a volleyball game of "who can pass the most laws that make rich assholes richer while screwing over the middle and lower classes." Nobody loses except for everyone else in the country. One more thing: Wall Street literally broke the economy, and only a handful of people were actually punished. We collectively feel (and rightfully so) that rich people are immune from any kind of punishment or discipline while they fuck over everyone.

    • Because there are children starving while billionaires are hoarding their wealth that could save lives. Anyone who advocates free-market Capitalism is a sociopath that needs to be locked up in a cell.

I deal with the mega-wealthy at work all the time. Billionaires, celebrities, etc. And here's my issue.. The problem I have is the general attitude that a clear majority seem to have toward people who are not wealthy. Now.. this is just my personal 20 years of experience, but I noticed a whole lot of "holier than thou" happening on a daily basis. You are spoken to as a servant, not an equal. You are belittled like a child in some cases and rarely even given simple gestures of gratitude like "Hey, man. Thanks for the good work". I can go to the ghetto and the home owner is out there trying to feed us, give us drinks, and offer us tips at the end of the job even though they have very little themselves. The wealthy? Don't even think about it. Now, obviously this doesn't pertain to every wealthy person I come across. A few of them are really down to earth people and treat us great. But you know what the common denominator is with those who are cool? As story of "Hey man, I came from nothing and worked my ass off to be where I am today. I know what you guys are going through. Damn good job, guys".

        • Honestly it's the wealth gap. The wealth gap creates opposing emotions that creates a bigger barrier. If the gap does not close like in a decade, a country would end up like France in the French Revolution; before and after.

        • We have created a culture of entitlement. Many floodians want to be as wealthy as Trump but all they want to do is eat Doritos and play video games. Oh yeah and complain that life is unfair while sipping Mountain Dew.

          • I always feel bad when i ask for anything remotely costly because my dad shames me for his wealth. Say i want a four dollar grilled chicken from mcd's. My dad makes me feel bad for not getting the mcchicken. Some dude said i was rich (i was wearing my class ring) and procceded to wealth shame me. The next day i find out his dad brought him a -blam!-ing new corvette. I face palmed so hard that day.
I would go on and be racist because he is arabesque but being a jew i suppose i understand,
Eh, I agree with what you're saying for the most part, some people do tend to lash out at others with more than them due to jealousy. That said, most Donald Trump haters don't hate him because of his wealth, they hate him because he's a loud mouth asshole.

            • Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are two of the wealthiest Americans and i don't see too many people hating on them because they're rich. Maybe it's because they're mostly beyond reproach in their business dealings and donate a shit ton of money to charities. Donald Trump is an asshat. Not simply because hrs rich. But being rich has affected his attitude.

            • Its not wealth shaming. Its hoarder shaming. Its ego shaming. Its "I can put a boat in my pool... on my yacht" shaming. Its fine if you're rich, just don't be a dick about it and hoard it all. In the case of Trump I don't like his arrogance. He literally said(paraphrased) "I'm so rich" as a reason he should be president. We can't have that.

              • It's not. It's the people that horde away money selfishly that are shamed. Granted that they need a certain amount to survive, still.

              • I don't mind people who are rich, pay taxes, and have made their money legally and morally responsibly. Donald Trump inherited half a billion dollars in real estate, and screwed over Atlantic city. Someone like Bill Gates, though, I'm fine with.

                  • now not all people with a lot of money are like this I honestly think that a majority of them are decent people, but there are people out there who act like the money makes them better than others, that because of their wealth they can treat others like crap. I honestly can't stand that, but for the most part I only dislike someone if they give me reason to dislike them ( such as treating me or others like crap)

Because people don't like to think about how they didn't get the success they wanted
