Destiny PvP Tips - How to get better at Crucible

I'm a gamer who puts in between 8-15 hrs a week whenever I'm really into a game. I put in a lot less time than a lot of my friends, yet I have a way better K/D. I say this not to brag, but to gain some credibility. On both of my hunters, my K/D is over 2.1, and my warlock has a K/D of about 2.0. My main tip? Play smarter. Don't try to only outshoot your opponents when you can outsmart them. I'll start off with some less common advice. -JUMP when moving around corners, especially in close quarters maps (e.g. Anomaly, Firebase Delphi, and Twilight Gap) -The reason I tell you to jump is because NO ONE LOOKS UP. Pull out your shotgun, enjoy your free kill. Or just double melee them. People always walk around the corner expecting enemies to be a face-level, not ten feet above them. Keep your eyes on your radar, time your jump, and blow them away. This works particularly well with the hunter, whose jump has a lot of hangtime, and the warlock, who has a long hover while gliding. -Jumping even when you are approaching enemies while wielding either a shotgun or fusion rifle. Most people will miss enough of their shots to allow you to get the kill -SLIDE at your enemies in close range fights -Sliding at your enemies while wielding a shotgun or fusion rifle is a fast-paced, aggressive approach, that usually yields good results. It's hard to aim while sliding at first, but like anything else, with practice you can get really good at it. -When engaging GROUPS of enemies -If you see a few separate blips on your radar, and you think there are 2 or more enemies behind that wall / in that room, here's a few things to remember: -If you are alone, and do not have a super or heavy ammo, DO NOT ATTACK THEM. Attempt to backpedal, get to cover, find some teammates, or get ready to kill the first one that comes out. -If you have a super, go in there and activate it, killing everything in sight. -If you have heavy ammo, use it wisely. If you're careful and stick to corners/cover, usually you can clear out multiple enemies. -If you absolutely must engage, use your grenades wisely, and attempt to pick them off while stick to cover or sticking to the corner. Use line of sight to isolate them. -Pick your WEAPONS carefully, based on the map -This is relatively self-explanatory. Don't use a shotgun on First Light (the huge Moon one) and don't use a sniper in Burning Shrine (the tiny Mercury one) -Pick a weapon that's relative effective range / TTK balance suits the map you are on. I personally love Suros Regime (can be replaces with any other decent TTK / low recoil auto-rifle), or pretty much any solid Scout Rifle, especially Vision of Confluence, MIDA, and some of the new ones from the Crota DLC. Here's a few things that are common advice that I will restate: -Aim for the head -Headshots will effectively half your TTK, giving you the upper hand. -Watch your radar -Destiny radar is almost too effective, no one can hide from it if they're moving at all. Even people crouching will blink on the radar. Watch your enemy movements -There's no shame in retreat. -Did you enemy get off the first shot? Is your health low? Don't be afraid to hide behind cover, or run away completely. Most people never consider the fact that you don't HAVE to fight the guy shooting you. If your health is low, hide/run, get health back, then go and try to kick some ass again. Some people are too impatient/ too aggressive, and they die every time they step out of cover with low health. That's pretty much about it. If you guys have any additional tips, or questions/concerns, please leave them in the comments.

  • To add something to that. Always laugh when you get killed or just stay happy in general. If your angry, you can't focus and you will not notice whats going on around you. Stay happy, It really works. .... And please remember to just enjoy the game and have fun. ☺

    • I'm someone who has mixed results with Crucible, probably bc I don't play it enough. Control and Clash are the two modes I'm decent at. But I struggle with Rumble and Rift. It's not that I don't have the skills to kill. I find my loadout or character configuration is not always optimal for PVP. Any good guides out there for this?

      • Very good advice....on the whole. ONly thing I'll disagree with is for people not to get predictable about jumping and sliding. These manuevers work because they catch people who are used to shooters without much verticality by surprise. I came from Titanfall, so I'm used to fighting in all three dimensions. So I tend not to get caught out by someone who is above me...and anyone trying to SLIDE to close the distance on me usually winds up dead long before they reach melee or shotgun range. So I would add these to the arsenal...but use them sparingly and wisely.

      • Forgot 1 big tip: know your enemy, inspect the people on the opposite team( for example, when someone uses pocket infinity, use the guns recoil to your advantage) when you see their name, you know to slide and get an easy kill.

Very nice write up. This is how I usually play but I do tend to be a bit stubborn and I have to force myself to disengage from fights that I'm not going to win. I like to snipe and I'm pretty good at it but some days I'm just not on point and can't get my timing right, but I just stubbornly continue to try to snipe instead of switching weapons...if a weapon isn't working for you that day, use something else. Lastly, I seem to be a super magnet...every time someone uses a super, I seem to be there...that's probably more bad luck than anything else. A tip though, against hunter supers, learn to listen for the distinctive sounds of them coming up and run like hell. Don't try to fight a hunter with his super up. The only time I try is if I'm sniping at extreme long range against a gunslinger (still not a good idea if you're not a good sniper) or if my super is up and I can nova bomb/hulk smash a bladedancer, which I wouldn't try against a gunslinger because they will usually kill you while you're mid-animation. Some people might not agree with using a super against one person, but if it's to stop a blade dancer from cutting your whole team down then it's worth it.

      • Nice tips mate.I'm going to try and attempt this tonight when I'm on. What is your personal weapon load out?I no it will vary from the size of the maps but it would be nice to know. I'm enjoying wrecking people with vex, light of abyss and corrective measure.i switch the vex out with last word, hawkmoon or thorn.

      • The titan lightning and hunter sensor grenade should be placed horizontally for maximum effectiveness. The blast cone can cover entire rooms that way.

        • Would you have any tips on how to aim properly? I tried messing around with my sensitivity but they didn't help. Also strafing makes it harder for me to aim so I'm not sure if I'm strafing properly.

          • Yeah, I noticed that recently that people are using their boost to hang in the air a lot longer. I usually just stand around the corner with a shotgun and let the guy run face first into buckshots. Agree, watching your radar is vital. Add to this: "Bob and Weave"; a simple and erratic side to side while shooting. Wait for your team to grab heavy ammo (and with that your team should immediately watch the clock and grab heavy ammo. I know for sure it spawns at 9 mins. The other times after are approximate 6-5 mins and 3-2) and you can "save" heavy ammo spawns if you don't pick it up immediately.

          • Grenades grenades GRENADES!!! They're your best friend in this game. When you notice someone approaching from behind a corner on radar, throw one to the left or right of them, then gun em down after the damage has been done. (lightning grenades are essentially another heavy weapon in crowded areas)

          • There are also ways that you can run around the map depending on whats going on that will yield alot of kills from flanking or catching people off guard. Its hard for me to explain but I can feel when turning around and cutting across the map will put me in a good spot to sneak someone. Maybe some one can articulate it better? watch the radar and try to figure out which way your enemy is facing basicly.
