Initially no. He managed to seperate his souls from his body, but a bunch of Jedi (like 100 or more) generated a wall of light which trapped him in his temple. His spirit then returned thousands of years later where it was banished by Luke Skywalker, his apprentices and the spirit of his old master. Through Sith alchemy he created tons of creatures and even led to the extinction of a whole race. He also managed to seperate Luke Skywalkers soul from his body and could manifest creatures of darkness out of thin air.

What ever happened to him?

He is essentially defeated when his spirit is "banished." I mean no criticism to OP, but banished is not the best word.
