The Story mode will be expanded upon in free content coming over the next 10 years, there is already a mission coming up soon in the latest bungie update. They set the foundation that they will build upon FREELY over time. (the two expansions are just their because activision required it) So the questions you have from the campaign will likely be answered eventually when more story missions are released. They basically just started with something to let you know "these are the basics of this universe, more to come soon." There are hints EVERYWHERE of some potentially interesting and fascinating stories that will be built upon soon. Yea, they probably should have included a LOT more to the story at launch, but at least they are freely adding more over time.
Also, they made your character where you could easily assume its "you." Your character is supposed to be YOU in this universe instead of playing as some other protagonist with their own backstory which you may or may not like. You can give your guardian its own back story if you feel like it!
So, in conclusion: There ARE more missions to evolve the story coming and you wont have to pay for ANY OF IT (except those two expansions but that is not ALL of the story. Just new side events I think.)

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with your overall point but I feel the need to point this out: The ten year argument holds no weight. THIS game will not last 10 years. The franchise will last 10 years. What they may or may not do on a title released 2 or 3 years from now has zero bearing on this one. Also, I have no reason to believe that the release of more story missions from Bungie will do anything to further the story. Based on the missions we have now, I can only assume that subsequent story missions will involve a few one-liners and holding off waves of enemies while my Peter scans some object(s). Finally, I have yet to see anyone at Bungie or Activision detail exactly what type of content will be free and what will be paid. This is not to say that they didn't however, so if you can point me to something credible that goes into detail about the depth, caliber, and cost (be it free or otherwise) of content that will be added, please show me some links.

Yes, they started with a rather disappointing portion of the story but the hints are there that there will be much more depth later. http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2014-06-23-bungie-coo I recommend reading more, but here is an excerpt: We sat back, long before we even came to our partnership with Activision, thinking about, "We wanted to tell a story over ten years." We wanted each one of these things to have its own beginning, middle, and an end, but we really wanted to step back and we can do it. We've done it before; we did it with Halo but we didn't plan it out. I say plan - I don't know how the story goes, okay? But really, think about how do we future-proof our technology? What are the kinds of things we're going to want to do? How do we build our team? How do we even build the building that our team is going to be in? http://www.gamespot.com/articles/bungie-thinking-about-lord-of-the-rings-sized-narr/1100-6422140/ http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/destiny-interview-bungies-eric-osborne-crucible-halo-their-10-year-plan-1461212 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYAI6-glTVk (not a very good video, quality or otherwise BUT it is a valid interview and towards the end at 3:40 they mention a 10 year plan and said they will try to make new content constantly expanding EVERYTHING every day. Now once they get the ball rolling they are likely going to be doing just that. (DAILY however may be a little TOO ambitious but they are going to try and release regular FREE content all the time to keep things fresh and expanding.) IF you look here http://www.bungie.net/7_Destiny-Events-Inbound/en/News/News?aid=12133 You will see there IS an entry which includes new content for the story mode. Looking at this update, this is a good sign that they are going to begin launching on a regular basis content which will expand the world. Also, with a crucible map on mercury there is a pretty good chance that they will add that planet at some point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpyRmZa6t-A Either way, we will have to wait and see what happens. Knowing bungie I do believe they will be releasing content to make the game far larger over time.

Edited by ColdAtrophy: 9/13/2014 10:17:50 PMI have faith. Thanks for all the info. The way I see it, my friends and I are enjoying the crap out of playing the game. I'm thinking that it's going to age spectacularly well.
