I've only been to the ER once. I got my tonsils and adenoids out, and they screwed something up with the pain medicine so that not only was I not able to swallow without wanting to scream, but I was constantly vomiting or dry-heaving once I ran out. I got really dehydrated so they took me there to give me an IV drip. Then they screwed up something they put in the IV drip and I started puking more. Finally they gave me the right stuff and I was okay after about an hour. This was on Christmas Eve btw.
