Some critics have commented that Ryse is about as fun as dialling phone numbers. One said he could play an entire sequence without even using his left hand to move the character. The developer has countered by saying that Ryse is about establishing "flow", with perfectly timed attacks allowing you to dispatch enemies gracefully. Furthermore, the variety of executions will make players want to replay levels just to get the perfect killchain and make use of the environment for awesome executions. You didn't get to play for very long, but where do you stand in relation to these comments? Is Ryse a boring dialer game, or does it have a deeper combat system?

  • I could comment that on the demo difficulty I was playing, you could quite easily mash X and get through the smaller groups, but there were some opponents perched on higher platforms you had to spear down or climb up to to kill, meaning you'd have a hard time just using one hand. I see where they're coming from, but the same could be said of Dante's Inferno, which I loved. Executions were all different. I must have killed thirty or more enemies with executions, but none were the same. The kills were horrifically satisfying and bloody. Additionally, there are enemies which dodge your attacks and you have to counter to get to (ala Assassin's Creed), but the mix I saw wasn't enough to really tell you just how deep the combat system is. It seems like a good hack and slash gorefest, and honestly, I'm more than OK with that. Plus, I died. So it's not like it's impossible to lose.
