Cause I don't approve of that business model.
I'm not saying that those types of games should free to play either, not saying that at all. Rather more MMOs should adopt the Guild Wars model, where you pay for the game, and then there's no monthly fees, and then you pay for the expansions, if the developer doesn't give them out for free.
I just find that to be a much better business model because it draws in more players but is still able to keep the kiddies out for the most part, and you still get a quality game, whereas A LOT (NOT all) of free to play MMOs are bad.
World of Warcraft would not have been as successful, nor would Blizzard have been able to afford to release patches like they do if it wasn't pay to play.
Less people player Guild Wars than WoW. Blizzard needs to not only pay for server costs, but also make sure quality is completely perfect in order to maintain their fanbase. They need to attempt to bring more people in, but still need to cater to their hardcore fanbase by creating unique, difficult, yet still balanced raid encounters. WoW has a shit ton better end-game than Guild Wars 2, and the subscriptions are the reason for it.
Hating on MMOs that have monthly subscriptions but aren't that great or have horrible endgame is reasonable. Hating on the business model as a whole, when World of Warcraft is a prime example of consistently putting out polished content, making it worth its subscription fee, is not reasonable.
So microtransactions galore?
No thanks. A game like WoW couldn't possibly run without a sub fee, and there's no way I'd prefer pay to win over everyone having the same advantage as soon as you buy the game.

No....far from. You're thinking of the free to play model.
I don't know of any other games that use the Guild Wars model other than well....Guild Wars, which because of the business model that they use, it's NOT a pay to win game.
Noe free to play games on the other hand ARE (for the most part) pay to win. Any games published by Sony Online Entertainment do a pretty good job at making F2P games, making them good, and having them be NOT as pay to win as possible.
More games just need to adopt the Guild Wars business model.
