So should I download the patch, and then download custom edition from here: http://hce.halomaps.org/?fid=410 or vice versa? I don't know how this works. Any help on how this works would be appreciated.

Edited by SLAMt4stic: 6/20/2013 11:55:02 PMDownload and install custom edition and then start the game and click multiplayer> online. It will automatically download and install the update when you go to play online. If for some reason the auto update fails then you should manually update but you should be fine with the auto.

I've only ever used halomaps.org (same site you linked w/ game download) and I have never heard of anyone getting a virus or anything from them
