Keep pandas in zoos by all means but wild pandas are one of those species that has become too specialist for it's own good and would probably have died out by now if not for human intervention. I feel trying to sustain a wild population would be fruitless. Just ordinary pandas though, red pandas are freaking awesome!

  • red pandas are not true bears, though. more like foxes.

  • So forcing the species to survive is the right thing to do just so humans can gawk at them?

  • As long as their welfare needs are met, why not. It's not like pandas have a sense of pride or anything that would make them resent being kept alive as a species.

  • because we as a species are messing with the balance of nature? If the species is meant to go extinct then it should, if they can't reproduce themselves to the point they give birth to more that die then they should go extinct simple as that. We keep complaining that humans should not play god but when something cute is going to die everybody demands something is done to save them.

  • Humanity has been messing with the balance of nature since medieval times, wiping out pest species and clearing huge areas of land. I've never complained about playing god, just about the questionable motives of some more shady areas.

  • What about the fact that we messed with nature by being part of the reason they're going extinct? Why should we not "mess with the balance of nature" now that they're almost extinct?

  • If a species of rat kills off another species of rat should the one thats killing off the other try and save it? Probably not, animals have caused others to go extinct its not just humans that have caused it, hell nature has caused 99% of extinctions I don't see nature trying to save anything instead it just replaces the species with something better.

  • You're comparing humans, a species that has conquered the world, traveled to Mars, and created quantum computers to rats? Really now? How can you possibly argue that rats would know that they're killing off another species? They kill and eat to survive, they have no idea they're sending a species into extinction. But we do. We're fully aware when we're sending a species into extinction.

So what's the problem? I'm sure that even if the rats knew what they were doing was send a species to extinction, they wouldn't care. The ones that died out ultimately served their purpose to nature and are now no longer needed. Our species is different though. Humanity evolves by changing the world around us, yet the basics still stand. A weaker species is sacrificed so we can grow stronger. If a species went extinct from our intervention, it's just our artificial evolution taking place.
