The NIF and the Z Machine are two of the world leaders in fusion research and they're both run by US National Laboratories. Just because the funding is partially hidden behind research into nuclear weapons doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

True, we do have some projects going, but not exactly any concentrated effort to build a working reactor, and they are all begging for money right now. We certainly aren't putting the effort or resources into it we have put into the space program or fission. To put it in perspective, our total all-time spending on fusion research is half of what the F-22s cost. I think the potential benefits are great enough that we should make it a more serious priority.
